FAQs about hotels in Beijing

From Chinese Dynasties to Cultural Dynamics

A world-renowned gem, sprawling Beijing has magnificent monuments and peaceful parks. At its heart is the world’s largest square, Tiananmen, surrounded by important museums and the amazing Forbidden City. This 15th-century, walled complex of palaces neighbors Jingshan Park and Beihai Park with its imperial garden.

Across from Tiananmen Square is the ultra-modern National Center for Perfoming Arts, a beacon of the city’s culture so impressively displayed at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the Bird’s Nest Stadium.

To its east is the UNESCO World Heritage listed Summer Palace, a lakeside retreat of emperors, while also UNESCO listed is the grand Temple of Heaven in Chongwen district, where remnants of Ming dynasty city walls are visible. Nearby are several hutongs, narrow alleys with traditional architecture, that contrast with wider, modern roads like Beijing Financial Street, the city's business area.

The most popular Beijing shopping street is Wangfujing, and other must-see sights include the giant pandas at Beijing Zoo and the Great Wall of China, an easy day trip from Beijing.

As you would expect from the capital of the world’s most populous country, there are a good number of 5-star hotels in Beijing on Booking.com, mainly in the Dongcheng and Chaoyang districts. There are also several hotels near Beijing Capital Airport in the northeast.

I lived in Beijing from 2000 till 2012 and have often visited since so for me it's a chance to revisit old friends and favourite places. I like the buzz of the city and the friendliness of the people. My favourite places are the old goods market at Panjjiayuan and the Old Summer Palace at Yuanmingyuan. At Yuanmingyuan people over 60 can go in free which is an advance on when I was living there. Public transport is ridiculously cheap, if you put 20 Euros on a travel card you can travel around for weeks, which gives the feeling that the city is open and the energy of the city can flow freely. Needless to say cheap transport is also family friendly, which for people like the Chinese who still value family is important.

    Beijing is immense.

Beijing is immense. The city is widely spread and the points of interests are far from each other - this means you will need few more days to see everything you want in the city. Moving around the city is relatively easy and cheap (but takes lots of time - don't try to walk much!), metro ride is 3-4RMB, taxi to/from the Capital Airport is around 100RMB. Be prepared for multiple security check points including metal detectors (even in every metro stn). You can expect those at the entrances to main squares, pedestrian streets, touristic attractions. Always have your passport with you, as a foreigner you are always being asked to show it with the valid visa. Card payments (visa-mastercard) are not much accepted, the best way is to set up Alipay app by linking your card or use cash (RMB). English is not spoken at all so be ready to have a translator app installed. In terms of ticketing systems - they are mainly in Chinese and via WeChat apps (e.g. Forbidden city / Mao Memorial). If you plan to visit the Great Wall - I would recommend to do it with a group tour (you can find plenty of them, in my opinion the best part is a Mutianyu part of the wall), the prices are about 20eur for a day trip + cablecar costs.

We stayed a total of 8 nights in Beijing.

We stayed a total of 8 nights in Beijing. The city is very big, very good transportation and cheap taxis. But you have to plan everything in advance because tickets sell out a week in advance (Forbidden City), for Tiananmen Square you have to register a day in advance and you best use local tourist companies to book the tickets because almost everything is in Chinese only. Food was cheap and of very high standard.

The people were very helpful. Too much security. All apps on my phone weren’t working which made it very difficult to get around. ( no maps working or translating apps) The metro ticket asked for ID so we had to go to the ticket office instead of a machine. Only 1 office manned and took a while to find. Sone of the attractions needed to be booked a week in advance. Traffic was awful quicker to work. Very few western style toilets mostly squatting ones. A day was enough

If your prepared to join a log queue the 6 day stopover free visa gives you the opportunity to see some great sites e.g. Forbidden City (but book in advance) , Bejing Zoo (Pandas), Great Wall (40 miles away), the Botanical Garden etc.. The Metro is a cheap way to access the city, although you'll need help from Metro staff in buying tickets. Taxis are cheap. Also pick your restaurant carefully and you'll get to try genuine Chinese food.

As I arrive at early hours at the hotel wed 0030 on the 4 Apr even though I have book on the 3 Apr. They did not provide us with toilet amenities or a room with window. The room was stuffy n Aircon not working properly. Following morning, I requested for a change of room which they did. The driver who whom I book via the hotel who had pick us up at airport T3 to the hotel was not friendly n did not assist us with our the luggages during our transit from terminal to the car park. He is a young man in late 20s . Hotel is s 20 mins walking distance to nearest Metro. Drop off point by taxi is at hotel is 50m from elobby ntrance. The Didi booking for cab is in Mandarin n those who do not know the places of pickup or destination may find it difficult to input the info for pickup n dropoff.

This small budget hotel was clean, comfortable, had a lovely courtyard,a nice restaurant attached, (terrific Peking duck!), free laundry facilities and a helpful (non-English-speaking) staff. Tucked away on an authentic hutong, the property also is a bit of a shrine to former occupant, American journalist Edgar Snow, whose landmark 1937 book Red Star Over China gave the Western world its first close-up look at the revolutionaries who would come to rule China. Building is a 3 floor walk-up, but porter carried our luggage up.

As a solo backpacker I almost booked an overpriced hostel which was less then 30% cheaper than this but had average reviews. I’m so glad I booked this instead. It’s easily a 4 or 5 star hotel, with everything you need, while it’s not that expensive at all compared to the region. Staff is helpful, breakfast is extremely good and the rooms are comfortable and clean. Overall a really pleasant stay and so much more comfort and luxury. Free gym, free water, free coffee (good one even) and so on.

It was crispy clean. Kitchen at B1 had coffee machine, pots and pans etc. The stove was easy to use compared to other stoves I had to work with in some other rental apart hotels in China. There is a farmers market in 5 min walk which sells everything we need. Subway station is within 5 min walk. Traveling with a toddler, so I need good kitchen, washing machine and fresh produce available in a walking distance. This hotel was it. Also the neighborhood is quiet.

The hotel was very central, the room was very comfortable and everyone was extremely friendly. Mark, from the hotel was always helpful, assisting with booking visits to monuments, or arranging cars to/from airport or to other places in Beijing. From letting us do the check in earlier as we arrived to the hotel in the morning, to suggesting the best places to eat, or visit in Beijing. Such an amazing experience, would repeat and recommend to anyone!

Fantastic character property, close to all the central landmarks, transport links and plenty of shops and eateries nearby. The staff were super helpful and professional. If I am ever in Beijing, I will return to Double Happiness in a heartbeat. Tip: I got in touch with hotel in advance and asked them to give me their name and address in Chinese; this saved a lot of stress with the taxi drivers.

The hotel is in a very convenient location right around the corner of a major shopping street with several large malls and close to a metro stop of lines 1 & 8 (take exit E3 at 王府井). Unlike Shanghai, Beijing doesn't have a lot of convenience stores (there are some hidden in the basements of the many malls but they aren't 24/7). Luckily, there is a vending machine and free coffee at the hotel.
