Picture perfect Heidelberg is guarded by its famous castle halfway up a hill. If you don’t feel like walking, a funicular train goes there and continues to Königstuhl Mountain whose views are fit for the king it is named after. Dating to the 13th century, the ruined castle has peaceful landscaped grounds to wander, and the Heidelberg Tun, the world’s biggest wine barrel. And big it is!
At the foot of the hill is cobbled Hauptstrasse, supposedly Germany’s longest pedestrian shopping street selling traditional German beer mugs amongst other things. Also here are sidewalk cafes, the odd bierkeller and several Heidelberg hotels.
A short walk west is the Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Spirit), towering above the Baroque old town. Its square is the site of the Heidelberg Christmas markets, while to the north the beautiful Old Bridge crosses the Neckar River and ends at a twin-towered city gate.
Further west is Heidelberg University, the oldest in Germany and with a national reputation to rival Cambridge, its sister city. Over the river, Neckarwiese is a riverside park popular with students for a barbecue and beer, while by night the city’s many bars stay open until the early hours (and beyond!).
The nearest airports – Frankfurt and Stuttgart – both offer quick access by train to the Heidelberg accommodations on Booking.com

Heidelberg is a stunning place, but perhaps it's a victim of its own success and I would think twice about going there at the height of the tourist season. Even on a wet Saturday morning in May, the old bridge was packed with Chinese tourists taking selfies, so I can't begin to imagine what it's like in the summer. My advice would be to go off season, have an early breakfast and wander the streets before the shops open.

Heidelberg is probably the most beautiful city I have visited in Germany. It looks like something out of a fairy tale. You can also enjoy nature in this city, I took the philosopher way and ended up on top of a mountain. It was just fantastic.

We just stopped for one night, between trains so just had a few hours and the evening. The Altstadt was very nice to wander round, and for a beer and dinner. I would like to go back and visit the castle, and see more of the town and area.

Heidelberg is a beautiful City.
Heidelberg is a beautiful City. You can't visit and have a bad time if you enjoy culture and exploration!
Choosing the right accommodation for you always helps of course but the City itself is enough to lift anyone's spirits.
Of course the castle on the hill was beautiful as you would expect. I knew it would look amazing up there before we went, and still wasn't prepared for how magnificent it was. The views from the castle were so scenic, I facetimed home to show them, which you were able to do up a mountain because there was 5G connection everywhere.
It is one of those places where if you do it right, you get to know the culture and understand it very quickly and immerse yourself in it.
Would highly recommend visiting at Christmas time.
Very friendly and easy check in. The hotel is an older building and feels like it even with renovations. However, the room was spacious and clean, and the mattress was very soft and comfy. There is free street parking available, but we did have to park down a couple streets to find a spot available. Walkable distance to the Heidelberg Castle, which was nice so we kept our parking spot on the street. It's a good hotel to stay at for the price.
While I heard poor reviews on staff, noise, and AC, I found these to be unfounded. We were in a quiet area, great AC, and the staff was more than kind. Its a good little 10 minute walk from the hotel into AltStadt, and there is a nice grocery store(Penny it's called), a 4 minute walk away. I could not have been happier with my stay. Heidelberg is a magical place and I recommend BW as a great place to experience it.
We loved our rooms! The breakfast was so good. I also appreciate how the hotel accommodated us to stay an extra day with river views! Excellent. However, my children swear they did not eat the candy bar that was charged to our room, although we paid it. Just wanted to let you know.
Thank you! I’m highly recommending your hotel to friends traveling to Germany soon.
Danke schoen,
Shana
The location could not have been better for staying in Alstadt Heidelberg. You have direct access to the castle and can walk to wonderful restaurants, shopping, and platz. The hotel boasts a beautiful terrace with awesome views of the castle. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. We chose to stay here as well because breakfast was included, and we were pleased with the selection.
The staff are so helpful and always with a smile. The hotel is located in top of of a parking garage and you have a wonderful view. The hotel is in the heart of the old town. Bus is just outside your doorstep. Heidelberg is a lovely town. We went two couples together and stayed in room 22 and 23 and we had the most fantastic terass with gergious views.
I have been booking hotels for my sister as an encouragement for traveling alone for her first time.
She said this hotel was one of the best hotel she have been in Europe, and the reception was one of the kindest. It was indeed the best hotel you can think of when you are in Heidelberg, very close to train station with warm charming hotel!
The stand out feature for us was the decor of the breakfast room and the whole breakfast experience. So nicely done with individual pots and jars of items and presented beautifully. I'd go there just for that. It was also extremely handy and easy to use the tram into Heidelberg, number 26 I think. Plenty of car parking space at the hotel
A delightful stay in a lovely hotel in the heart of old Heidelberg. The position cannot be bettered, being on the street leading from the main square to the river bridge. The restaurant serves delicious local food. Isobel is a warm and welcoming host. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. I look forward to a return visit one day.
The person at the front desk, who appeared to be manager of the hotel, was very friendly.
The hotel was within walking distance of Heidelberg Central Station, with a bus stop in front of it and a tram stop nearby, which was very convenient.
The entire hotel was clean and the kitchen in the room was very convenient.
You can't beat the location of this hotel. Located in the old town section of Heidelberg, it's steps away from the bridge, and dozens of restaurants/shops/cafes. You could probably walk to Schloss Heidelberg from here, too; but will burn off some beer and schnitzel doing so.
Beautiful hotel and restaurant situated in the middle of heidelbergs old town. Restaurant is really worth a trip and the personel was very friendly and helped us with all our wishes. The garage has few parking spaces and require some skill to navigate.
Beautiful hotel located on a hilltop overlooking Heidelberg and next to the cliff railway. Nice large comfortable room, excellent breakfast, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The bar is a nice place to enjoy a few drinks as well.
Quiete and just 4.5km from de city center of Heidelberg, what is not problem at all because there is easy access to bus stops right in front the hotel. If you have a car is even better staying there. Breakfast good with all people need.
Hotel was perfect for our stay in Heidelberg! Great location.. within walking distance of Old Town and right on the River.. lovely views from our room of the Neckar River the breakfast was amazing!
The hotel is in a very nice neighboorhood. Clean and comfortable. Good selection of breakfast. The hotel staff is very polite. The Heidelberg city is just 10 minutes away by tram 24.
