FAQs about hotels in Heidelberg

Fit For a King

Picture perfect Heidelberg is guarded by its famous castle halfway up a hill. If you don’t feel like walking, a funicular train goes there and continues to Königstuhl Mountain whose views are fit for the king it is named after. Dating to the 13th century, the ruined castle has peaceful landscaped grounds to wander, and the Heidelberg Tun, the world’s biggest wine barrel. And big it is!

At the foot of the hill is cobbled Hauptstrasse, supposedly Germany’s longest pedestrian shopping street selling traditional German beer mugs amongst other things. Also here are sidewalk cafes, the odd bierkeller and several Heidelberg hotels.

A short walk west is the Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Spirit), towering above the Baroque old town. Its square is the site of the Heidelberg Christmas markets, while to the north the beautiful Old Bridge crosses the Neckar River and ends at a twin-towered city gate.

Further west is Heidelberg University, the oldest in Germany and with a national reputation to rival Cambridge, its sister city. Over the river, Neckarwiese is a riverside park popular with students for a barbecue and beer, while by night the city’s many bars stay open until the early hours (and beyond!).

The nearest airports – Frankfurt and Stuttgart – both offer quick access by train to the Heidelberg accommodations on Booking.com

Lovely atmospheric old town with great market square with cafes and restaurants. Fantastic funicular railway which takes you up to the castle or even further for panoramic views. The castle is more or less a ruin but quite big to mooch around, but very busy when we visited on a Saturday. University Quarter has some great places to eat with good quality food.

Spend a day in Heidelberg taking in the Castle and the Old Town and also use Heidelberg as a base to visit some nearby towns an villages. Heidelberg station could do with a luggage storage facility at the train station. Though there is one at the tourist office just outside the station, its expensive and available during the working hours of the tourist office which is 10:00 - 17:00 hrs. It is not run by the Tourist Office but by another service provider.

Heidelberg is a stunning place, but perhaps it's a victim of its own success and I would think twice about going there at the height of the tourist season. Even on a wet Saturday morning in May, the old bridge was packed with Chinese tourists taking selfies, so I can't begin to imagine what it's like in the summer. My advice would be to go off season, have an early breakfast and wander the streets before the shops open.

Location was great. 20 minutes walk to Philsophenweg and 12 minutes to Heidelberg-Altstadt Bahnhof. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The Hotel am Schloss is on top of the parking garage. I missed that when booking. Go into the garage and use the elevator! Breakfast was good. I had the Single Business Room which is not very chic, but exactly what I expected for the price I wanted to pay. View from the garden of the Castle is cool. Covid-19 protocols were followed. I appreciated that. I will stay again if I return to Heidelberg.

Super clean, feel-like-home apartment with very well equipped rooms and kitchen, and beautiful garden,as well as an access to a small mountain with magnificent view on top. Mrs. Ludmila, the nice host was so kind to us and made efforts for helping us for our laundry that we do not need to come back for moving washed clothes to dryer, all clothes were nicely folded after we get back from whole day trip, these are extremely helpful values added services provided to us. Everything! It’s a really good hotel - small and friendly with very helpful staff. There’s onsite parking for a reasonable cost and the bus to the old town stops just across the road and runs until midnight. The journey takes under 10 minutes. Our room was very spacious and comfortable and the breakfast was excellent. The hotel overlooks the river Neckar (next time we’ll book a room with a river view) and was easy to find. Heidelberg is a lovely city and well worth a visit.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Hotel ISG Heidelberg. Everyone was so friendly at the hotel from the staff at Reception to the lady clearing breakfast. We were made to feel so welcome. We paid a little extra to park, but we were happy knowing that our car was safe and we had a guaranteed place. Breakfast was good, everything we needed and plenty of it. Evening meals were huge, a little too large for me, but very good. We will definitely stay again if we are in the area.

Picturesque small hotel. Great view over Heidelberg from the outside terrace. Our room was small but clean and modernly furnished. The bed was comfy and the shower was nice and hot. Great to take the tram down to the Castle. After exploring the castle, take the stairs and walk down to Heidelberg old town. The barman that worked in the bar was absolutely amazing. He was so attentive and customer service came first. The breakfast was also tasty.
