The Malt Scoop Inn, hotel in Hatherleigh

The Malt Scoop Inn in Merton provides adults only accommodations with a garden, a restaurant and a bar.

Where to begin, Becky and Chloe were very welcoming from the minute we arrived until we left. The room was beyond our expectations and the bathroom was very modern. We opted for the room with the sofa and this was more than comfortable after a day out, to sit and unwind with a drink or two whilst watching TV. The bathroom was spacious and Becky had even thought about leaving some full size shower gel, shampoo and conditioner. Becky made sure there was ample supplies of tea, coffee, sugar and there was even a little fridge to keep the milk fresh. Not found often in other places we have visited! I liked the position of the mirror to a plug, to enable hair drying and a full hair dryer was available. Most essential. The bar area is small and cosy and locals were friendly. There is ample space for seating, with little rooms leading off the main bar area. A good menu of food is available at reasonable prices. Breakfast was filling each morning and freshly cooked. Order placed the evening before ensured that you did not have to wait long. Devon the Labrodoodle loved to see you and always wanted to be stroked!

We didn't go to site see we went to pick up a second hand very specialised mobility scooter. The reason the trip down was too long is that we now have our first electric car, but stopping every 100 miles with a wait averaging 1 hour for each stop, it was very drawn out. We missed getting to our pre booked accommodation as we didnt get there untill 11.30, it was all locked up and lights off and it was too late to find a travel lodge all receptions had closed for the night. We had to find accomodation for our 2 dogs as well as us so we had to sleep in the car over night and in mid November it was bitterly cold and damp. The next day we got going for the scooter and hit a pot hole at 9am, we rang the RAC they didn't get to us until 3.30 in the afternoon, only to be told the tyre had a side wall split so needed a new tyre.Graig from the RAC could not do enough for us he rang round to find anyone with the correct tyre, this came from a local mobile tyre fitter who arrived 90 minuets later. We was supposed to be heading home this day but with a 12 hour journey we rang the hotel that we missed the night before and they honoured our day we missed and put us up on the second night with no extra payment so a big thank you to the George in Hatherleigh for being so accomodating. Thank you so much to a very very long couple of days.

Very quirky hilly town (the smallest town in Devon).

Very quirky hilly town (the smallest town in Devon). Many of the buildings were original cob and thatch. Great community market on Tuesday morning, though original cattle market has now closed. A couple of pubs, fish and chips and cafe. Co-op for supplies and money, along with Post Office and other shops. Church has very pleasant chimes on hour and quarters. Fast flowing river at bottom of town near Architectural salvage and fire station. Lovely walks around the town and over the common (too wet when we were there)

Great place and location for what we wanted sadly the new years band cancelled last minute but the manager didn't replace with any music through a defective speaker system. This should have been tested before hand just in case. Therefore celebrating new year was somewhat flat.
