There Once Was a Gem on the Shannon…
Limerick revels in one of Ireland’s most iconic views – the River Shannon curving past King John’s Castle, a 12th-century fortress that could have come straight from a Grimm fairytale. Frank McCourt wrote ‘Angela’s Ashes’ about his childhood here, and his former school is a museum about him, set amid elegant Georgian architecture in the Newtown Pery district. Equally attractive is the custom house, now housing the Hunt Museum's eclectic collection of art and artefacts.
The 12th-century St Mary’s Anglican Cathedral is the city’s oldest building used daily, while St John’s Catholic Cathedral has Ireland’s tallest spire. The coexistence of the two is symbolic of the 17th-century accord between Jacobites and Williamites, supposedly signed on the Treaty Stone.
The Milk Market is a bustling hub of local produce sellers, and the shops of pedestrian Cruises Street are surrounded by restaurants and bars offering great nightlife, including some where you can jig to traditional Irish folk tunes.
The city is also sports mad. Munster Rugby play in Thomond Park, while the Gaelic Grounds ring with the sounds of hurling and Gaelic football supporters. Golf courses, a racecourse and greyhound stadium complete the picture.

It's a nice city to stay in for a couple of days. It's better to do it over the weekend so that you can visit the local milk market and King John's castle. Limerick is a really friendly city.
Limerick is a really friendly city. There are loads of lovely places to eat at reasonable prices. Nice shops. Pretty castle. Loads of parking places. Milk market at the weekends is a nice place to go for a couple of hours. Lovely churches too. The story cafe is a super place for breakfast or lunch.

Surprising to discover the extensive number of fine residential roads into city centre with beautiful old properties. Lovely quayside for strolling and a great choice of cafes and restaurants. Limerick isn’t what I expected… it’s much nicer. The people are friendly and welcoming in most areas. Some areas are a little scary and wouldn’t like to be on my own but overall the city itself has a great buzz. Great restaurant options and copious amounts of coffee shops. We booked a king room.
We booked a king room. Unexpectedly, our room was actually a suite. We were presently surprised, and it was large enough to entertain our other couple who traveled with us. The one downside: we were on the front of the hotel, overlooking the street, and it was very noisy at night. The A/C didnt work in the hotel and we were on the 7th floor, so we slept with the windows opened. We were offered another fan, but declined, as the daytime temperature was comfortable with opened windows.Margo

You can get there very quickly by bus number 304 from center of Limerick. For less than €30 I got clean and cozy single room with a comfortable bed, wardrobe, table, mirror. Next to it, comfortable, clean, big bathroom available and the kitchen with dining room - everything like home! Nice staff. Free bottled water, cakes in room. I wish I could only stay for one night! The restaurant/bar attached to the hotel seemed to be a pretty popular place with the locals so it was a great place to have a pint. This also meant the staff were working extra to service both areas but they were still very attentive and extremely helpful while it was busy. Shoutout specifically to Alex, he went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable and provided excellent service right from the check in :)

As soon as you get out of the Hotel, the view of the River Shannon accompanied by Ireland's typical greenery, welcomes you. The Hotel's pub is an outstanding experience in itself....and the food served there is possibly the best food that I've had in my 6 days at Ireland. You don't have to ask the staff for anything.......because what you expected is already there.
