Rome itself is very dirty, unsafe and hostile city, horrible food in the city center, a lot of beggars and smell of urine everywhere in the very center - I guess we'd never ever visit it again. Tram lines were looking as if from somwhere in poorest districts of Bangladesh, not as it should be in one of the oldes and famous cities in Europe - a tons of waste, graffities everywhere - looks like city government doesn't care at all about it, hoping that tourists will anyway come to look at old stones. Calling a taxi to city center was a real quest - we were waiting for an hour, and had to cancel taxi order at the end, as no one accepted it (we were not brave enough to use metro). The pizza and soup we've ordered in one of the restaurants close to Colosseum - I didn't thought that it is possible to spoil such a simple thing like pizza, but the stuff of the restaurant succeeded: a small piece of meat only on one slice of pizza and a whole boiled cold egg in the center of it :-(((.
So, if you are not a fun of waste, beggars, horrible food, thiefs - don't go here!

We stayed for 2 nights and had 3 full days to sight see.
We stayed for 2 nights and had 3 full days to sight see. Booking ahead the trips is a must if you have a limited amount of time. We paid for the 'skip the line entry ticket' options for the tours which did save us hours, especially at the Vatican. We booked through 'Get Your Guide' which was very efficient with plenty of options. We did a mix of guided tours and self-tours. The guided tour at St Peter's Basilica including the dome climb was excellent. The guided tour of the Vatican Museum & Sistine Chapel was less effective. When visiting the Pantheon we did the audio guide tour which was a more relaxing way of taking in everything. We also did a self tour of the Colosseum, Forum and Palentine Hill. Everywhere is easy to access on foot. As the city is so busy, we would not recommend getting a taxi. However, the Metro system was good. We headed away from the main attractions to eat and found restaurants that were a lot less expensive and with plenty of choice. We would recommend at least 4 days to see the key sights in Rome and not feel too rushed.

The sights were plentiful and so amazing to behold in person. Spending only 4 days in Rome is not enough; considering the overall logistics. The local people, police and military personell were all very helpful. It did appear that some of the american travelers were poor examples for others to see. Will return to Italy soon: It's where my people are from!!

Though the beauty of some areas were breathtaking, not to mention the exhibits of obvious cultural significance, Rome is currently suffering from over-tourism. Lines are long, museums are crowded, and traffic is congested as well as risky to navigate. Add in the pushy merchants looking to take advantage of unsuspecting travellers as well as expensive prices, and its all a recipe for a stressful holiday stay.
Having said all that, I loved my time in Rome. It's just not a place for the faint of heart or those who suffer anxiety easily. It's comparable to New York in many ways, sometimes being even more intense in some areas such as Vatican City. Definitely worth a visit, just be prepared for the challenges.

Imagine an open-air museum with great food on every corner, beautiful architecture and plenty of sunshine - that's Rome. Would recommend learning from my mistakes and staying at least 7 days to visit all the key sites (Colosseum, Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Fontana di Trevi, Roman Forum...), to have enough time to visit the Vatican and enough time to try all the Italian gastronomic specialties. Or you can go for 4 days like me, walk around 20 kilometers per day and lose weight - either way it is a must for everyone to experience this beauty at least once in a lifetime.

This was my first trip to Italy. And straight to Rome. I really wanted a place to sleep and relax that would not spoil the impression of the trip. Therefore, I chose the hotel for a long time and very carefully. I chose Amica Roma Guest House and I was right! The hotel is conveniently located, within walking distance of the Vatican and the metro. Very cozy and comfortable room. Very tasty breakfasts! And a wonderful, sincere host Robert. Staying at this hotel only enhanced my wonderful feelings from a trip to magical Rome!
Residenza Maritti is a marvelous hotel. I have stayed here perhaps 20 times in the last 7 years or so, whilst living in Italy. It is quite simply one of the nicest places I have ever stayed at. The location is nothing short of spectacular; the staff and owners very kind and helpful; the rooms full of character and history as well as being spotlessly clean; the rooftop terrace has breathtaking views of ancient Rome. When I come to Rome, I always stay at Residenza Maritti. It is a wonderful place to enjoy the Eternal City from.
This was the best hotel in Italy we have visited out of 7. Very clean, comfortable and with good vibe. Great outdoor swimming pool - we loved it after hot day. But the best was customer service. We have left a wallet and they helped us a lot and sent the wallet back. Location was good, not far from the metro station and when we used taxi from the city centre was not expensive. We had a very good time.
Very central hotel close to the A Metro line, Metro stop Re Di Roma being 5 mins away. Reception staff very helpful but also very kind and helpful staff at breakfast. Clean and comfortable rooms. Very good breakfast. This hotels does the best scrambled eggs in Rome, if not in Italy!
Very good Location if you need a hotel close to where the buses go from to Rome Airport
Breakfast very good for Italy, the best of the three hotels we stayed at in Italy
