It was an amazing experience! Everyone is so nice - my mum couldn’t speak English but the staff still managed to help her go around the hotel. The view on the terrace is incredible, and since we stayed there for a Sunday, we actually saw the pope from the terrace. Overall a very pleasant journey.

It goes without saying that the location is exceptional but the real highlight of the stay was the way you were treated like a guest of the house and not just a customer. You are seated in the comfortable reception area, more like a large study, with a wonderful lady who checks you in and then escorts you to where the breakfast will be, explains that there will be black coffee available at the buffet but if you want cappuccino, etc., you ask the staff and it is freshly made. This wonderful lady then takes you back to collect your luggage , asking if you need assistance, and brings you to where the lifts are and explains were your room is and that there is always someone available to assist you, which they absolutely were. The room was well appointed and very comfortable with a well stocked fridge and coffee machine. We awoke each morning to find a sheet of beautifully headed paper with the readings and Gospel of the day printed on it, we thought that was a lovely touch.

The Vatican

The world’s smallest state is also one of its most attraction-packed spots. As the centre of the Catholic Church, Vatican City is chock-full of awe-inspiring religious architecture and artistic treasures. Must-sees include the imposing St Peter’s Basilica – so vast that the Statue of Liberty could fit comfortably under its dome – and the mesmerising frescoes of the Sistine Chapel.

Be prepared, bring water, to walk, and walk, and walk, and walk forever. The journey all inside brings you through endless museums on the promise of seeing the Cistine Chapel. Finally as 70 year old's we arrived exhausted, worn out and unable to enjoy the wonder that is the Sistine Chapel. A one off experience that I don't think many would repeat. Book the cheapest ticket to beat the queues. Insist on not queing otherwise you be shunted to the end of very long queues adding to the torturous laborious walk. Way too much spectacular artifacts to take in in 3 hours.

After paying $80 for two time-specific tickets, there would have been at least a thousand cued up to enter with thousands already in the complex. It was a "cattle drive" with attendant rushing the mob along. I am a former museum director and this was my worst museum experience. BUT it is the only way to see the Sistine Chapel - also wall-to-wall people.

Reserve tickets especially for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, be at least 1. hours before your reserved time and have comfortable walking shoes. Do not visit the Basilica on Wednesday and Sunday mornings ( closed )before at least 1pm - unless you want to see the Pope from the balcony at noon. Be ready for very long queues.

A very pleasant and well-located apartment. Just a short walk from the Vatican, Piazza Navona, and close to several bus stops. It's also located on a small street, so it's quiet. The apartment is equipped with everything you might need. The rooms are bright and well-air-conditioned. A big plus is the private terrace, where you can enjoy breakfast and a glass of wine in the evening. Just be careful of the steep and narrow stairs. This is the only drawback if you have trouble climbing. But otherwise, it's worth staying here.

The views from the apartment and the roof top terrace were exceptional. The location of the property with its proximity to the Vatican and a short walk to the Metro and bus shuttle to the airport was a major bonus. Geri was very helpful and his restaurant recommendations proved to be very well informed. We would thoroughly recommend Il Sorpasso. Also, we loved our fresh delivery of croissants every morning and the coffee machine.

Centrally located on the river between the Vatican and Piazza Navona. A self contained spacious apartment with 2 big bedrooms and aircon in each room (there was plenty of room for my family of 5). check out the hotels for your ideal location, you get very good value for money from smaller hotels/ bed and breakfast/ guest houses etc. Use the hop on hop off buses, buy tickets to the main tourist attractions in advance, unless you like to wait in line a lot! Vatican is manic, I went in March and it was starting to get busy, I can imagine it would be very hot and uncomfortable in the height of the season.

If you take the time to go through the streets north of the Vatican you can find many small stores where the locals shop. As well as the popular brands and designer labels these streets are full of market stalls with lots of bargains and lovely small deli's and cafes that sell many wonderful local goodies. Great restaurants in this area too, well worth spending a few hours of the day finding a treasure or two.

Get a 48-hour pass on one of the "hop on, hop off" sightseeing bus services. Many of them also offer "skip the line" tickets for certain sights. These tickets are worth every cent. There are tourists waiting in long lines everywhere, which will waste a lot of your time and energy. Rome is an intense tourist destination with much to see. Plan well, do research and be prepared to spend extra on special services. You will need at least 5 days to a week to truly see most of the major landmarks. Just the Vatican Museum offers so much that you could easily spend 3 days inside and still not truly see most of it.

As it's Rome there will always be tourists everywhere but DO NOT go with any tour group guaranteeing to skip lines, the queues are never as bad as they look. We were told a "5 hour queue for Vatican and the Sistine chapel" but if we joined a tour we can go straight in...for a €50 fee. We opted out and queued and were in and out of the Vatican, Vatican museum and Sistine Chapel within 2.5 hours all for a quarter of the price (student and EU citizen discounts). The same goes for the colosseum. Go at your own pace and avoid the scammers. The hotel had basic tourist maps which were perfect and we easily found our way. But we did find there were always less people between 12-1 as they had gone to find food by then.

The Colisseum and the Vatican are probably the main attractions, but there are dozens of monuments, museums, gallaries, fountains and churches that all offer a piece of ancient or modern history. Even the roads and walls and buildings seem to tell a story about one of the most preserved ancient cities in the world.
