Unaware that ferry arrival at almost midnight was at a cargo terminal, miles from anywhere, no taxis but helped by kind crew member. Nervous as solo traveller but most accommodating receptionist guided me by phone into stay. Tramline on waterfront easy access to station.
Only stopping point to Palermo - can’t judge attractions.

Messina is a pretty city in a beautiful spot that is off the radar for most travelers.
The cathedral, rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake, is beautiful, with Byzantine mosaics in the apses that miraculously survived. The clock tower mechanical clock is spectacular even though it only operates once a day.
The regional museum is full of treasures that were salvaged from churches destroyed in the earthquake. The highlights are two Caravaggios and an Antonello da Messina triptych.
Interestingly, Messina appears not to promote itself. The tourist office seemed to always be closed. I ended up asking in shops what sights to see, how to get to them on busses, and for restaurant recommendations. Locals were very glad to help me with that information.

The town is Ok for a day & night.
The town is Ok for a day & night. The cathedral at 12pm is the biggest thing in town and it is worth a look for the curious. Note all the bars around the square have a surcharge just to sit down - which they don't advertise. Try the Sri Lankan restaurants around town, delicious food at a great price.

we only stayed 3 nights, the area we stayed was very busy not far from ferry crossings. We visited Taormina and Cefalu, 2 nearby cities. Didn't get to see much of Messina itself. Did visit beach which was very nice.

Messina doesn't have a lot of attractions - the Camponile was interesting to see at midday, as well as the Norman cathedral, for which you could really see the Mudejar influence - something I found surprising for Italy.
OTOH, it also means there were fewer tourists about, which suited us to a tee.
If you are into hiking, it looks like the mountains above the city would have some nice trails with views out over both the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas.
The B&B is centrally situated, just a few steps away the Dome and it has everything you need. The room was spacious and very comfortable. Jonathan was very polite, kind and ready to assist. They kept our luggage while we were exploring the city which we truly appreciated. Bed very comfortable and loved the sheets. Big bathroom with all the amenities. Definitely a perfect place to explore the city. Loved the fresh Sicilian lemons and Jonathan was super kind to give us some to take away. We'd chose it again for a stay in Messina.
The space is a straight path from Messina station. Takes about 20-25 minutes walking or you can take a bus or tram to Don Oriole stop. It's a great value and you can see other parts of city. There's also a grocery store 5 minutes away. The room also has air conditioning which is highly appreciated.
Paolo is an attentive host. He's interested in ensuring you have a good stay and it's working hard to upgrade his space. I felt very welcomed in his home.
Fantastic and cool! The apartment is ideally located, clean, very comfortable, has everything you need and even more! The hostess is an amazing person, very welcoming, kind and responsive! Thank you very much for the wonderful days in Messina, it was amazing!!! If we have the opportunity to come to Sicily again, we will only stay in these apartments!
I have been travelling a lot recently and this is easily one of, if not the best place I have stayed. The host is super friendly and helpful- the location is excellent- half way between Messina and Taormina; with hardly any tourists. 5 min drive from the beach and some excellent restaurants- perfect; with great views. It is hard to leave!
Above all we stayed with two lovely people for a week in their old farmhouse and orchard up in the hills above Messina.
Friendly, helpful, they made us feel very welcome.
Good breakfasts to start the day before we took off to explore the bird life. And delicious dinners! What wonderful fish. And endless cups of good Italian coffee
1. In the very center of Messina, a few blocks from Duomo and everything. Free street parking is possible
2. Rooms are spacious, comfy and very nicely decorated with Antonello di Messina's reproductions. The room looks like a 3* hotel room at least
3. B&B host Adriana is very helpful
We stayed as an overnight stopover. The property is super clean, breakfast was good and substantial. The room was a good size and very clean. The host was great as he waited for us as he had an issue with the ferry coming from Calabria. Close to Messina city centre if you have a car.
High quality furnishings, luxurious sheets & bath sheet towels, very nice breakfast selection with very fresh coretti, fresh fruit, variety of juices, several kinds of coffee. It was within walking distance of major sights. Messina surprised us with the cleanliness of the city.
I was able to check in at night after ferry arrival.
The breakfast display was the best we've seen in Italy. So many items: pane, canolis, cereals, eggs, bacon, juices, fruits sliced, nuts, toast, granita, meats and cheeses, etc.
Location near train station.
For the quality/price it was excellent, staff super friendly and welcoming. I was staying with my wife, the meal we got there for 20 eu was prepared on the spot, very delicious. The nicest beaches are very close.
Quick and smooth check-in. Balcony with view over the port and strait. Very convenient for Messina Centrale station and many nearby points of interest and places to eat. Comfortable bed, clean bathroom.
The room was very clean and comfortable. The view from the balcony is also amazing! The owner told me amazing stories about the building and the city! He also recommended great things to do in Messina.
The property was very close to Central station and the port. Inside very new rooms with modern decor. Wonderful staff nothing was a trouble. I’d definitely stay here again if I came to Italy. Rosalind
Everything- it is a quality hotel for a great price - located close to train station (5 minute walk), clean large room with friendly staff and a great breakfast!
Very stylish boutique hotel with all you need for your stay. Breakfast was excellent on the roof top. Staff is really friendly and welcoming. 100% recommended!
