Vibrancy, Vespas, Vesuvius
Undulating beside the Bay of Naples, this UNESCO World Heritage city is a maze of narrow streets and funicular railways. Although it has an incredible array of churches and monuments, it’s the sheer energy, pulsating life, and buzz of Vespas that really make it exciting.
At first you could mistake this for chaos, but given time you’ll see there’s method to the madness. The stunning, curved portico of the Royal Palace. The perfectly thin pizzas which originated here. The red pepper trinkets to ward off the evil eye adorning practically every old town doorway. All are crafted to perfection.
While all this goes on at street level, below is Underground Naples – a series of visitable tunnels and even a Graeco-Roman theatre which you stop at before emerging into someone’s house!
Head up to the Posillipo area for stunning views of the city and Vesuvius in the distance. The volcano itself can be visited and looking down from it towards Pompeii and Herculaneum gives context to the thousands of artefacts now on display in the city’s National Archaeological Museum.

I hadn’t realised that Naples had such Interesting landmarks as when you google it after send you out of the city it was only by putting my trainers on and exploring by foot. I found some of the wonderful buildings. Palace the museum is the art galleries. We only had a short one night stay so we didn’t have the time to experience the sights of Naples. But we were there long enough to nearly get pick-pocketed, managed to stop the attempt, so maintain your awareness at all times. Many great places to eat and metro was excellent for transfer to and from the busy docks. Streets were full of litter which doesn’t provide a great impression.RobertNew Zealand - 10Scored 10

Naples is very different from the rest of Italy. But you have to experience it! Not always a pretty place but lots to do, and great day trips. I recommend Paestum if you’ve already been to Pompei. Food in Naples is fabulous and very good value.DavidAustralia
