The hosts were charming and helpful. The breakfasts and dinners were copious and good, and very appreciated considering that the location is far from stores and restaurants for those without a car. Because of this, it was also very quiet, which is appreciated.

Nikko is one of those places that looks like tourist-central on paper but it's worth going there. It's quite near Tokyo so don't worry about long train rides. The temples and nature in Nikko, and walking around will already do you good, and on top of that there's some fun-parks nearby. Kinugawa onsen is a city nearby with places to enjoy onsen, and I enjoyed going there but it's not for everyone, so do you research.

This is my second time to Nikko but this time doing an overnight stay in Nikko and then then one night in Kinugawaonsen. And we did the Sengyogahara hike with Yunoko falls, Kegon falls and Chuzenji Lake besides exploring the Toshogu shrine. The Nikko pass is a value for money pass enabling us to explore the different places within Nikko and Kinugawaonsen. The timing was just right with the full blooms of sakura especially in the Toshogu shrine areas.

Most restaurants around Nikko Stations close early.
Most restaurants around Nikko Stations close early. Only a few are open after 7 pm. Beyond Central Nikko or in outer Nikko/ Oku-Nikko there are are more interesting scenic hiking trails and sightseeing spots. Need to plan as bus frequencies are affected by weather and waiting time can be long.

We visited quite a few places during our two week stay in Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto and then we took a two day bike ride from Imabari to Onomichi). Nikko was the most beautiful of the beautiful places we visited. Took a bus ride up the hill and hiked in the forest which boasts two types of bear, deer and monkeys. The temple was beautiful and we enjoyed trying local food. We each had a "Yuba set" at a local restaurant.

The rooms were freezing cold no heating and it was -5 inside the hotel. They provided us with one thin blanket nothing like advertised, the windows were open and unable to close. We are having to seek medical help as one of my friends has developed hypothermia. No food no drink and the toilet facility does not flush.
Said in advert the beds would be made up for us. After a vicious scolding by the owners wife we had to awkwardly make up our own beds with no instructions at all.
If you like being shouted at, sleeping on a solid cold floor with a stone for a pillow this is definitely the place for you.
Didn't really wanna even give the one star but no choice for 0*.

Nikko is a lovely small place.
Nikko is a lovely small place. The local Chinese on the high street has amazing food, it has a very small door and would be easy to miss, but make the effort to find it.
The temples are amazing, but I loved the mountains, if you like trekking then you will love Nikko.
A quaint, charming mountain lodge run by a wonderful staff that’s dedicated, professional and welcoming. Cozy loungewear provided, onsen on the second floor. Food prep, presentation and service is exceptional. The hotel is in need of updating but that is part of its charm. Located directly across from lake with rental boats and a tour boat that runs regularly and stops a few places where passengers can follow walking paths to waterfalls. Busses run from Nikko town center making it easily accessible and well worth an overnight stay.
Very good location, just outside Nikko Toshogu site. The onsen was nice and I had it to myself as I was one of two sets of guests that weren't the middle school boys plus teachers on a field trip. I have no issues with sharing space with school trips--,they were well behaved kids for the most part. My room was large for one person and I had my own toilet. The staff were very nice to me, the only foreigner in the hotel that day. They kept my bags for me and put them in my room when I came back later in the afternoon.
A nice hotel located close to Nikko. The staff was extremely kind and polite. The room was very spacious and the futons were comfortable. We didn't try the restaurant, but the smell coming from the kitchen was amazing. The hotel has both public and private onsens. We opted for the private onsen and it was a fantastic experience. The private onsen is located on a terrace with a beautiful view of the mountains. On the last day, the hotel shuttle dropped us at the train station just in time for our next trip.
Spacious, comfortable for a family or a group of friends, clean, very comfortable futon, close to Tobu-Nikko station, a convenience store, a supermarket and a ramen shop that closes late at night
The hotel owners were nice. For us, they weren’t mean like what many comments said. Also, the young staff was very kind to us. On the day we checked out at 5.30 AM with our heavy luggage, he let us use the front gate instead of the back gate with steep staircase (The front gate is closed from 11 PM to 7 AM).
Very glad to have stayed here for 2 nights though without meals. All sold out and Nikko is very busy destination. This ryokan hotel is near to all the must go places . And the onsen is great after a long day out. Staff very friendly & helpful. Piano at lounge in the evening is a relaxing place to hang out . Behind the hotel there is route to kanmangafuji abyss along Daiya river and a little tea house facing the river.
Simple dinner options 2-5 min walk away .
Hotel is located about 3- 5 minutes walk from the Train station. There are many restaurants nearby. Rooms are well sized , comfortable and the toilets are clean and well equipped. Free breakfast was available and offered both Japanese and Western food. Staff speaks English and was very helpful for helping us. They gave us directions and also arranged Taxi services immediately. Would highly recommend this hotel- will stay again if we revisit Nikko.
Nikko Station Hotel Classic is in a great location for JR & Tobu Nikko train services as well as the World Heritage Sightseeing Bus. The staff at the front desk were very welcoming, kind and informative and spoke very good english which we really appreciated. The room was cozy, clean and the amenities provided were of a good standard. It was a great place to stay after a long day of travel, the bed was comfy.
The hotel facilities were very nice. The front desk staff only spoke Japanese but we managed to understand one another. The massage chairs were amazing. The buffet - holy cow the amount of food. Our room was large and clean. We enjoyed the bath services inside the room and outside. There is a free shuttle. It is closer to the Tobu Nikko Station. We didn't' realize and took a taxi the day we arrived.
We needed a simple hotel at the end of a long late train journey and this place turned out to be that plus much more. There is a generous amount of facilities and vending machines, and the breakfast really is great. Staff were exceptionally helpful, even holding our luggage an extra night for no extra charge while we travelled on into Okunikko with just our backpacks.
This was the best hotel I stayed in on my 3-week trip to Japan. Beautiful location for Ukonikko. The onsen was great and every evening there was free sake and snacks. The communal room was excellent. The room was basic but clean and comfortable. The breakfast on both mornings was fantastic! Highly recommended!
Great capsule hotel.
I really liked the room that resembles a train compartment.
It has everything you need: a bed, wardrobe, TV, headphones, and a desk.
On the first floor, there's a room with a bath.
They also provide yukatas. Wonderful hotel.
If I'm in Nikko again, I will definitely come back.
This is an excellent hotel walking distance to the shore of the lake. It is very clean and staff is kind, attentive and supportive. They offer a shuttle bus once per day from Nikko Station. There are three hot pools, one inside and two outside. Japanese style rooms are big and very cozy.
Peaceful little hotel at the lake with its own Onsen. They allowed us inside the Onsen without us having to cover our tattoos, which is not something you can take for granted. The staff was friendly and the room was very clean. The room was super spacious, especially for Japan!
The Nikko Kanaya Hotel has a good location if you want to visit the world heritage site. A bus stops on the street a 100 meter down hill from the front door if you want to do something else, like a hike from Ryuzu falls to Yumoto Onsen - highly recommended.
Staff was very warm and friendly. Room waa clean and modern, but still felt traditionally Japanese. Best hotel room we stayed in Japan. Location is quiet, and easy to access all attractions in Nikko. Would definately stay again.
Older clean hotel. Location away from busy city. Easy to access neighborhood by foot or train. Good selection of food at breakfast & dinner. Onsen relaxing. Foot onsen nice plus. Saturday fireworks a bonus! Great staff!
The staff were incredibly helpful and thoughtful, the room was perfect, spacious, and the whole hotel was very clean. The location is fantastic if you plan to visit the famous Nikko temples and shrines!
The location is great just a stroll away from the Nikko Toshogu Shrine. We enjoy the traditional Japanese decor of the hotel, and sleeping in futons. The room is clean. The outdoor onsen is great.
