Pluses for this hotel - wonderful views and all rooms have a view! Such a friendly, helpful staff. We were not sure where the room for breakfast was and the lady at the front desk walked us to it which involved going upstairs and down a hallway! Fabulous traditional breakfast and the staff were very helpful in explaining how to eat dishes we were unfamiliar with. We rented a private onsen and it was wonderful with great views- we rented one of the open air ones. Overall we have had a wonderful stay. I love Hirado and would come back to this hotel. Some of our party speak some Japanese but the staff spoke enough English that along with Google translate, English speakers would do fine!

Lots of great nature spots, including nice beaches.

Lots of great nature spots, including nice beaches. Many historic sites including a castle and some cool churches. Good food. You can spend a lot of time exploring this island - hiking, fishing, swimming, visiting museums, eating, and more. You'd want a car to get around the island, which I recommend highly, but if you don't have one there is still stuff in the main town to see and do on foot.

The weekend trip to Hirado was the perfect getaway, quiet and charming the town is the perfect spot to spend some time wandering around, hiking the olle trail, tasting great coffee and amazingly fresh seafood direct off the boat. While some of the sites themselves such as the Xavier Church and Castle are similar to things you'll find elsewhere in Kyushu, it's the atmosphere of calm that saturates the area and the views you get from the various spots and lookouts that you really go for. It's an easy enough place to get around without a car though that would certainly help for exploring further out of the town, A weekend was the right amount of time to see the basics though you'll definitely want to visit again.

I mainly went to Hirado due to the history of the Dutch Trading Post and William Adams the first Englishman in Japan (who was the inspiration for the novel Shogun). It was out of the main visiting season and I loved it (felt like I had the town to myself). I had a rental car what was great to get around how’re you can cover the main attractions without a car. I particularly enjoyed the Old Dutch Trading Post and the Matsura Historical Museum (which has a great collection and I would rate as one of the best small Museums in Japan). The people of the town very very welcoming and the food I ate in the restaurants was some of the best I have had in Japan. The Hirado Castle Museum does not have a lot of items in it’s collect but it is worth a visit for the views alone.
