Everything went well. We had our own car which made it convenient to get around especially to the university. Otherwise, we thought it was quite a bit of a walk to the main part of town.

Proximity to historic area and Coimbra university was terrific and it was close to the river and restaurants. I liked the historic nature of the hotel itself. Even though I don’t like elevators it was definitely a treat to ride in such an old fashioned one. The honour bar was nice to have and staff were helpful.

FAQs about hotels in Coimbra

A Seat of Learning and Royalty

Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.

The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.

The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.

The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.

Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.

We were lucky enough to arrive during the last week of term for the university students, which made the town lively and interesting. The tour of the university , particularly the library, was fascinating. It was also lovely to walk through the old town, eat pastries, listen to music and absorb the atmosphere. Sitting in the Botanic gardens with a book in the afternoon sunshine was an opportunity to relax in otherwise busy days.

Coimbra is a delightful town to visit.

Coimbra is a delightful town to visit. The town is architecturally pleasing, with clean, safe, streets, and a refreshing lack of graffiti. There is a good choice of hotels and restaurants, and those that we patronized were of good quality, with helpful staff, all of whom, in our experience spoke good English. Recommended

Coimbra is a great city to visit and use as base to explore other locations in central Portugal. Make sure you wear comfy shoes, the cobbles streets and walking is often up steep hills. The library is worth viewing at the university, but make sure you book in advance or get there early, as they have limited tickets and time slots. The parks are beautiful along the river and worth taking the time to visit. If adventuring out, highly recommend Obidos and the Buddha Eden garden, as well as Aveiro and Costa Nova.

Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers.

Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers. Centro (old part of town) is very lovely and has a lot to see. Many small interesting roads and pathways to walk around and see beautiful buildings, historical churchs, shops, cafes...Restaurants are reasonably priced and there is a variety of different cuisines to accommodate everyone. We stayed one night, but could have easily stayed another night.

The hotel staff went over and beyond to ensure our stay was exceptional. They even ran out of the hotel to the train station to let us know that we were headed in the wrong direction to get to the Roman ruins. Breakfast was tailored to our preferences. We’re remodeling our home and got several ideas from the design and functionality of the bathrooms. Excellent restaurants surrounding hotel and the best meal of our 2-week stay in Portugal, suggested by hotel staff. We would stay here every day, if we could.

We had a very enjoyable experience staying here while visiting Coimbra. It was nice to have our own little apartment vs a hotel room, and we enjoyed breakfast at the table under the beautiful windows in the morning while we planned our day. The location is fantastic and is right next to the aqueduct, botanic gardens (must visit!!) and University of Coimbra. We found several nice restaurants and pubs nearby, too. We would not hesitate to stay here again!

In terms of privacy and comfort, this was much better than I normally get for the price in Portugal. The terrace is also very nice, and has a nice view of the city. I liked the room, and getting a private sink for washing your hands etc. is a nice compromise between having all bathroom facilities shared, and a complete private bathroom which is usually more expensive. It’s situated in a very quiet area, and the room was very quiet in the night.

Wonderful hotel right in the heart of the Baixa. This is my third stay here and I'm sure that I'll be back when I am in Coimbra The elevator and airconditining are a must and they work very well here. The beds are comfy (I have always had a room with two single beds pushed together) and the desk and chair are very good. The bathroom is very upgraded and nice - good water pressure, new, nice facilities.

The property is well situated between the University and the old town. The building is from the 1800’s- so cool. Not sure if the stone walls are from the original building - awesome nevertheless. We thought it was great value. They brought us breakfast to the room- good variety of buns, scrambled eggs, yogurts and fruit. Great views of the city of Coimbra. Will definitely recommend this hotel.

Location is very good. The old city and Coimbra university available by walk. Was very good for one night or more to explore Coimbra. But steps! Like 3 normal floors. Not good for luggage, aged people or problems with knees. Good to visit hotel Oslo just opposite to the appartement parking and ask for a terrace view. Take a glass of wine and enjoy the view. The staff is very friendly.

A top establishment. Right opposite Coimbra Town Railway Station yet we heard zero train noise. It is within walking distance of good restaurants and I highly recommend Tartufo Italian. The shower was the best we have had in Portugal! it is air conditioned however you can open the windows if you wish. The bar on the roof has good drinks a a nice view of the city, Highly recommended.

I was concerned about a hostel type experience, but this eas a pleasant surprise. The best meeting experiences of my entire trip. Thanks to the shared kitchen! Plus a great value. Beautiful facility. Location was great for visiting central Coimbra and the university. The hotel is of the Grand Old Style, and breakfast reflected that, a delightful classical dining room and settings, great service. The toaster was a bit erratic - first slice came out white, the next brown, the third on fire - but that added to the charrm!

The location ais great, very central! As Coimbra is quite small is a perfect place to stay for a weekend. The studio was cleaned, and has basic thing in the kitchen so enough to cook few basic meals. Perfect for a weekend or a pitstop while travelling trough Portugal. Also, there was an AC in the studio which helped a lot.
