Évora is a beacon of heritage in the heart of rural Portugal. Life is played out among narrow, cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings that provide welcome shade. Most buildings are decorated with blue or yellow trim, giving this laidback city a coherent feel.
Blue tiles adorn the incredible interior of the Misericórdia Church, and the Church of St John the Evangelist also features this typical Alentejo style. The most outlandish is the Church of St Francis where one chapel is created entirely from human bones and skulls.
The Gothic cathedral has a peaceful cloister and next door is Évora Museum with its collection of medieval, Islamic and Roman artefacts. In the large square in front sit remains of the Roman Temple, and Roman bath ruins lie under the town hall.
The Palace of the Dukes of Cadaval has a turret-like tower, similar to those in the city walls. One of Évora’s most impressive monuments – the 16th-century Silver Water Aqueduct – passes right through the walls and used to end in large Praça do Giraldo, the city centre’s main square. Some of its stone arches have been cleverly bricked in to create bars and restaurants.
Booking.com’s accommodation in Évora includes luxury hotels with pools, cheap hostels near the train station and guest houses by the university.
Lovely place to visit. Full of history and lovely buildings. Some great places to eat too. We ate at Enoteca Cartuxa - highly recommended but booking needed. We went on a Monday and it was busy. Walked around most of the walled city but could have done with more than 24 hours to see it properly.
Authentic old city. Not too crowded with tourists. Food scene was great - ate at restaurant called Momento which was one of our best dining experiences during our 18 day trip through Portugal. It was a small restaurant with a very engaging owner/chef who spends time with each guest explaining the farm-to-table eating adventure.
Breakfast available in Ibis Evora, but not dinner. However there are excellent restaurants in the old city at short walking distances, including local cuisine and Asia fusion. All the city sights can be seen in one day.
This is a great and interesting town with a load of history. It has interesting shops and some great restaurants. Size-wise you can do everything by walking if your hotel is inside the walled city. Evóra sits on a hill, so the walking can test your fitness. It can get very hot in summer and also very full.
Stayed here for 24 hours and felt like we could have filled another day. It was a nice change from being by the coast for the rest of the trip. There was a lovely park but we didn't get to go there so that's what we would have done on day two.
Of the five medieval fortress-type towns I visited during my trip to Portugal, I liked Evora best. The old city within the walls has lots of interesting antiquities, but has retained a vibrant quality.
Wonderfully preserved architecture of a 15th century convent, where our room was a former monk's cell. Almost had to duck to get through the door! And right in front of the hotel are 1st century Roman ruins. The lovely small city of Evora is very walkable, very charming and a fantastic location from which to explore other great towns and sites in the area. Our small rental car was perfect for getting around some of the very narrow roads in town.
Évora
We loved everything about the property, particularly the location. We appreciated all the special touches that made this little apartment unique. My husband gave it a 10+. I especially appreciated the bottle of water, something I often recommend to hosts. We have been in Portugal 3 weeks and this is the first host to have cold water. (My husband liked the wine!) Communication with this host is the best! Highly recommend this oasis in Evora.
The property was beautiful and rich in history. We were only there for one night, but wish we could have stayed longer. We got up very early and enjoyed the pool and jacuzzi all to ourselves for 2 hours! The breakfast was high quality with a very wide variety of options. We spent 2 weeks in Portugal, stayed in 6 different hotels - this hotel was our absolute favourite and we hope to come back!
The hotel is lovely. Our room was spacious and airy and new/ spotless. It was very comfortable, and the windows and shades kept out noise and heat (the street is somewhat busy and Evora can be hot). Quality bathroom products, nespresso in the room and free water! We loved the rooftop terrace. The location is ideal for walking around Evora.
We loved this hotel - the staff were efficient and the room was quiet and comfortable. It was only a short walk into Evora. The rooftop pool was excellent. The breakfast was the best I’ve ever had, with a lot of choice, and delicious local products. The service was super. Great view of Evora from the roof
Evora is a tight, Roman, ancient town and the hotel is located conveniently in the center. Driving into ancient towns is always a challenge, but with their private secure parking dropping the car for your stay is easy. The breakfast is wonderful as you sit in the courtyard overlooking the pool.
Nice and cozy hotel. The atmosphere was really good and the stuff is super friendly and helpful 😊 Hotel located in Évora, so it's a great combo if you want to chill out by the pull, but also want to explore the city I took option with the breakfast and it was good
the location couldn’t have been better and the service and staff were amazing. the fact we were in the old city and we’re able to park the car and walk everywhere made our stay perfect. I would recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Evora.
Super cool guesthouse in an amazing building right in Evora centre yet still with access to a nearby garage. Outstanding rooftop terrace with a great view. Best breakfast I've had in Portugal with everything you could wish for and more.
Evora Farm Hotel is a wonderful place in the countryside. Everything is there so quiet and peaceful. We felt in love with the little farm and its cute animals and the view on the hills and their olive trees.
Évora
Lovely farm stay just outside Evora. Friendly host, recommend booking dinner with them. Very peaceful but still convenient to town if you have a car. Apartment was very comfortable and good space.
the hotel is well located in the center of Évora, nice pools outside and breakfast chef was always nice even knowing that were no waiter’s around
Location was perfect spot. Close to all. Quiet olive oil press turned hotel. Charming appeal with a nice courtyard.
