I loved the view from the room. The price was fantastic. While the hotel was a bit of a walk from the historical area, the walk was nice, parking ramp was close and it is close to the best restaurant we ate at while in Portugal. Cantinho do Fatisto

Historic Center is good with lots of restaurants and courtyards. The cable car to the top of the mountain is a must do. It is 7.5 euros return. Residents take a lot of pride in their city. Most of the tourists are Portueguese . Prices are less than in the Algarve. Appears to be great bus service, but everything within walking distance.

Guimarães is an acient town where Portugal originated.
Guimarães is an acient town where Portugal originated. It is quite small. It's enough for the Visitors who don't have any specific plans to spend 1 whole day to see all the most important historical sites in this city.

Some locals call it "The Heart of Portugal" because what became the country of Portugal began it's fight for liberation from Moorish Occupation here. The castle from then is still standing and is currently undergoing extensive renovation. The old city center is nicely preserved and is very walkable. Regional food is hearty and very tasty. While it is touristy, it is also a university city. Pretty lively with a good range of affordability in eating, staying, and shopping.

Guimaraes was a lovely historical town with a lot to see just walking around - historical churches, lots of restaurants and pretty sites. We went to Citania de Briterios (2,000 year old Celtic village) - a short drive away - and loved it. We could have spent longer here.

I only had two days in Guimarães, and I wish that I could have stayed for at least two more. I stayed in the historic centre, which has much to offer in terms of aimlessly wandering around and staring agog at the old buildings, visiting museums, churches, palaces, and castles, eating delicious food, and enjoying artisan shops. I also took the cable car to Mount Penha and spent a few hours exploring the caves and sites, which was not enough time to see everything. Pack a picnic and plan to spend at least three hours wandering around the top of the mountain, enjoying the breathtaking views of the city, exploring the caves and grottoes, and shining about all the people who have been on this mountain in the past 5000 years.
The hotel staff is exceptionally nice! The receptionist'll willingly help you, but at the same time, you'll not be disturbed in any way. My room was very clean, with a comfortable bed and an AC (which was a life-saver during hot days). Regarding the location - the hotel is close to the city center and the bus station. I highly recommend this place (especially taking into account the price) :)
this property is nicer than a 3 star hotel! the rooms are very nice and spacious! the garden is so pretty and pleasant! the breakfast was better than most 4+ star hotels where we have stayed! staff was very accommodating! what a wonderful surprise! Guimaraes is a gem - what a beautiful town with wonderful restaurants (restaurants recommended by hotel were outstanding!)
A wonderful luxurious hotel right in the heart of the old town. Clean, spacious, and with an excellent breakfast cooked to your wishes. Everything was very nice. Friendly staff, comfy beds, silent at night, good shower. The restauration of the original big-stone house, which took 7 years, has been done with great attention to detail and comfort.
The hotel is very clean, the staff is very nice and the 24/7 free bar with coffee and tea was very nice. The breakfast includes superb food and the staff tries really hard to replace empty plates immediately! There are adapter jacks everywhere and a very large lounge for working, it is very business-friendly and exceeded all our expectations.
This hotel is great! Right in the old town of Guimaraes, just round the corner from the main squares, bars, restaurants, so easy to access. Everything was perfect and very comfortable. The breakfast routine was a bit funny, but actually quite nice - no buffet, everything served to you in a set order.
The staff was exceptionally kind!
the best hostel ever!! common areas feel like exclusive boutique hotel with covered court yard, outdoor terrace, renovated kitchen ( fully equipped) and nice dining areas!!!
not to mention 5 min walk away from historical center, including castle.
free parking in front of property and most amazing staffs!!!
Excellent hotel with outstanding restaurant. Staff were courteous, professional but friendly and helpful. Great location, walk everywhere in the old town from the hotel, Bed was exceedingly comfortable - just like home - which is a rare thing in Portugal, the nation of rock hard beds! :-) Spotlessly clean.
It was not my first time in this Hotel, it's simply amazing. The staff are super helpful, the rooms are super comfortable and the spa is perfect, for 10€/person during the stay is money well spent. The only bad part was charging 4€ for two additional towels, but otherwise it was just perfect.
Hotel Mestre de Avis was a gem of a hotel. It was in the perfect location for access to the medieval centre.
The staff were very helpful especially Lillianne who went above and beyond! The breakfast is very substantial. We feel this was an excellent choice for our stay in Guimaraes.
The room is very spacious with panoramic view over the city. The breakfast is good and served on top floor with a wonderful view.
The hotel has the most comfortable parking ever. If you come with a car, you will definitely enjoy it, especially if you have a lot of luggage
A well done renovation to an old building. The owner also runs a restaurant next door and the food is authentic Guimaraes cuisine. Private
gated parking made leaving to explore the nearby attractions pleasant since I did not have to worry about finding parking.
Everything was super good specially the people in the reception. We could also work in the common spaces during the day. Highly recommended.

Uniquely beautiful architecture, location, and premises. Fantastic indoor and outdoor sitting spaces. Lots of walking opportunities on the property. Incredible views overlooking the town of Guimaraes. Hotel staff is exceptionally friendly and attentive
The Location was Perfect. Near to Grocery shop, coffee shops and tourist places. We had a big room and comforble bed.Very clean with fridge and kettle. Price is excellent for a last minute booking. I highly recommend this hotel.
Very nice hotel directly downtown Guimaraes - easy to reach, perfect base to walk in and out of downtown. We had two very nice, clean rooms with lots of lights towards the Western side and enjoyed our stay very much.
Everything was absolutely amazing. The hotel has beautiful rooms, with large doors that open to a patio and an in ground swimming pool. My room had a lion's foot bath tub!
Great location, superb staff and spacious breakfast area, offering an excellent choice of food. The hotel has a nice open-air pool and guests can access the spa.
