Tivoli Coimbra Hotel, hotel in Coimbra

This modern 4-star hotel is located near the Mondego River in historic Coimbra. Its modern rooms feature a flat-screen TV with satellite and paid movie channels.

The hotel is a former Convent, situate on the banks of a river. The architect who drew up the design must have had a very difficult task, as in several places he/she used sloping ramps to connect adjacent spaces. However these ramps are wheel-chair friendly. The Dining Room is the former central courtyard/cloister, now roofed in, and with numerous instructive wall panels of portraits and histories of the Knight Templars, who owned the castle on the hill above the town. (It would have been nice if a translation in English was provided). The catering staff were friendly and helpful, and the food selection was also good. Our room had a view over the town towards the Knight Templar castle on the hill top.

FAQ about motels in Coimbra

A Seat of Learning and Royalty

Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.

The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.

The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.

The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.

Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.

Coimbra is a delightful town to visit.

Coimbra is a delightful town to visit. The town is architecturally pleasing, with clean, safe, streets, and a refreshing lack of graffiti. There is a good choice of hotels and restaurants, and those that we patronized were of good quality, with helpful staff, all of whom, in our experience spoke good English. Recommended

Coimbra is a great city to visit and use as base to explore other locations in central Portugal. Make sure you wear comfy shoes, the cobbles streets and walking is often up steep hills. The library is worth viewing at the university, but make sure you book in advance or get there early, as they have limited tickets and time slots. The parks are beautiful along the river and worth taking the time to visit. If adventuring out, highly recommend Obidos and the Buddha Eden garden, as well as Aveiro and Costa Nova.

Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers.

Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers. Centro (old part of town) is very lovely and has a lot to see. Many small interesting roads and pathways to walk around and see beautiful buildings, historical churchs, shops, cafes...Restaurants are reasonably priced and there is a variety of different cuisines to accommodate everyone. We stayed one night, but could have easily stayed another night.

Coimbra is a great city with very interesting historical sites and churches. Interesting shops and restaurants. the Igreja santo Christo is especially good to visit situated in a lovely square. Five-minute walk from Coimbra A train station; online pix meant we knew exactly which building to look for. This is a charming and old-fashioned hotel that antique-lovers should really enjoy; it's like being on the set of a 1920s or earlier movie, and has an old-fashioned wood-lined elevator, complete with folding bench. We loved the place, but ... The one perturbing thing was the lack of in-room Wifi, but there are lots of comfortable spaces to connect on the main floor. For a couple of vacation days, though, this was not a big deal.

Small hotel in the center of town. Hotel is in the lower part of town near the river; plenty of restaurants, stores and bars are nearby; and the historic university is about a 15-minute walk uphill. (Note: Hills are steep in Coimbra!) Hotel is family-owned, with pleasant owners. Bedroom and bathroom were clean, bed was comfortable, and daily housekeeping service was good. Bedroom had a small desk and chair, TV and wardrobe. WiFi service was acceptable. Price was reasonable, so the room was good value for money.

Hotel Oslo was very clean and comfortable. We had a family room, which gave us a room separate from our two kids. The rooftop terrace was a really nice place to sit in the evenings and see the view. The breakfast was one of the best we’ve ever had. More like a cruise ship breakfast than a typical hotel breakfast. The staff was very friendly and accommodated all of our requests immediately. Parking was free and easy. Everything in town we wanted to see was walkable from the hotel.

The location of the hotel is excellent… very close to the University of Coimbra. The hotel is a refurbished old house that is beautiful and comfortable. we had two rooms with a shared common area with kitchenette and sofas. the staff was extremely friendly. They gave us great recommendations for lunch and dinner, they also welcomed us with a bottle of champagne and cake, and gave us cookies when we checked out. the rooms are small, but comfortable, and really nicely decorated.

Wonderful hotel right in the heart of the Baixa. This is my third stay here and I'm sure that I'll be back when I am in Coimbra The elevator and airconditining are a must and they work very well here. The beds are comfy (I have always had a room with two single beds pushed together) and the desk and chair are very good. The bathroom is very upgraded and nice - good water pressure, new, nice facilities.

The location is fantastic--just a few step down the cobblestoned hill to the main square and main shopping street of the old town. Near many cafes and restaurants. Also near the old church where the first king of Portugal is buried. These units are being entirely refurbished by the owners in marble and wood. Incredibly clean! The duvet and towels are new and of good quality.

Location is very central in the Coimbra old town: handy to everything. Quiet at night. We also liked the "roof garden". The reception staff (at Hotel Oslo) and the young staff on-site at Entre Ruas (for cleaning and replacement of supplies) were extremely helpful. Overall, the apartment was spacious for three people, with two bedrooms and a big lounge/dining space.

The room is luxurious and spacious. The bed the best we've slept on during our 2 weeks travelling around Portugal. The location could not be bettered and the bathroom newly done (previous reviewers have left some negative comments about the bathroom). There is a lift!
