Try to avoid this city if possible!
Try to avoid this city if possible! They have nice pictures of some areas in travelling brochures but this is like 5% of the toal city. Mostly this city is heavily broken roads, mud-walkways, overcrowded, traffic jams and polluted air. When flying to Tanzania try to be it that city not too long. Fly or drive away to your next destination ASAP. And remember - prefer to use (locally represented) agency when travelling longer distances in Tanzania. If something happens with the vehicle (sooner or later it will happen) you have someone who might help you or at least worries about you.

I liked the outskirts of town - 1hr away from the airport was where I spent most at. The main city was a bit overwhelming and stressful at times, i.e. police officers hunting after foreigners and questioning your presence etc. I had two occasions where I was stopped just like that and the officers asking heaps of questions like where you come from, what your travels purpose was, what do you do, and if you're married (I'm a female solo traveller). I answered all the questions succinctly & clearly. However these officers just somehow would find ways to make it go longer than necessary. One even accused me of not having the right document (I was like what do you mean with the valid passport and visa?!). Anyway, he wanted to take me to the police station and court of law. I had a local driver with me who talked him out of it by giving him some shillings. And he turned to me and said "it's solved". Make sure you always carry your passport or ID documents with you. It's always helpful to know at least a local that you can reach out too when you find yourself trapped in tricky situations. Not much to see either in DAR. Maybe spend more time outside of the city.

Dar es Salaam is wonderful city to visit.
Dar es Salaam is wonderful city to visit. It has many interesting sites and amazing high-end restaurants to choose from. We had a wonderful experience at the AKEMI REVOLVING RESTAURANT where my spouse thoroughly enjoyed Lasagna. My grilled chicken was not exactly up to the task but passable. The service was great but the hotel manager Mr. Lorenzo Sachin could do with some PR. He moved around the restaurant totally ignoring some tables (such as ours) while busying himself with customers on other tables. Mr. Sachin, customer equity is important more so in hotel and restaurant industry... Mwenda (Kenya)

I was there for a wedding reception, which was a lavish occasion, put on by my son's in-laws, as the happy couple had married in the UK, where they live. Dar is all things to all people, teeming with life and humanity in all its colourful fluidity.
There is wealth and deep poverty, but with it all, people are proud of their country and most have a friendliness and humour in all their dealings. There is always something to see or watch.
There are local buses, which we were discouraged from using, but taxis are easily obtained and the drivers are knowledgeable as to how to get around the city. Above all, don't think you can hire a car. Driving in and around Dar is only for the very experienced.
Stay in the best hotel you can afford, as the ones on the beach overlooking the Indian Ocean are truly paradise.
The hotel is a beach hotel, the staff are warm and welcoming. Check-in was smooth. The hotel has a beach and restaurant on the opposite side of the main hotel. The rooms are clean. We had dinner at the restaurant, the portions were adequate and the food generally was delicious. There are many activities around the beachside to engage in: pool tables, swimming pool, paintball, and PlayStation 3 and 4. The kids enjoyed the pool as well. The breakfast had variety and was yummy.
The rooms are roomy and comfortable. The gym facility is well thought out and one of the best in Oyster Bay. The pool is big enough to get some laps in and relax (if you choose not to go to a local beach) and it is well protected from road noise. The spa was nice and I visited it three times during my week long stay. The massage was adequate to relax after many months of travels. I would definitely state the spa is second only to the personnel working the front desk.
We rented an apartment in the Chelsea hotel. it was one of the cleanest places I’ve ever stayed. The staff was helpful. The location was convenient. Quick walk to the coast. What I liked the most though? The food!!! Wow! We ate dinner here and the curry was one of the best we’ve had. With food like that, you don’t need to go searching out of the hotel. Also, don’t forget to grab a beer and catch the sunset from the rooftop. views for days! 😍
The staff were very professional and friendly ex specially those on the reception. The cleaners cleaned to a very high standard and should be rewarded. I will be coming back to Tanzania next year with friends to get married and this Hotel is at the top of my list. It was a wonderful experience. Keep up the good work and I will be back next year. Thanks to all the Staff for making my stay a joyful and comfortable one.
It was our second time and we would definitely come back only there if we have to come back to dar es salaam. As the place is really simple calm safe and nice, on the beach. The small bungalows are on the beach too. The neighborhood is also very nice.
This time we did not like the room they gave us because it was supposed to be with a sea view thus we asked them to change it and they accommodated us very fast.
This hostel was very well run. It was fun meeting travelers from all over the world! My favorite part was the location in the middle of an ex-pat neighborhood. It was a cool part of Dar es Salaam to see and felt very safe! We have a private deluxe room with attached bathroom and enjoyed the decor/furnishings.
Good location, not too busy, but at the same time close to Morocco station where you can get the bus to the city centre. Safe area. Breakfast included. Host is helpful and available. Good wifi, big lockers. The dorm has both aircon and fans, and the temperature is just right (not freezing).
Good service by staff at the check-in. Property is located on the beach but access to the beach has been ruined due to hotel building a retaining wall on the beach and no room for the guest to use the beach in front of the property. Cleanness of the area and room.
The staffs made our entire stay memorable to an extent we had to add extra nights. The meals at the restaurant were awesome.
We really enjoyed our stay and we recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to be at the beach and loves good food like us.
Location was very good. The hotel is easily accessible from any party of the city. It is among the best hotels in Dar es salaam located along the newly renovated Bamaga and Mwenge areas with all important amenities.
The location is great, as it’s just opposite the boat terminal to Zanzibar, and it’s right in Dar Es Salaam’s city centre. The staff were also really helpful and friendly and the facilities were great.
The location was nice and near both Masaki and Oyster Bay, placing you walking distance from great restaurants, beaches, and bars. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful and accommodating.
The location was perfect as it’s close to the city centre and not far from the airport. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the restaurant on the rooftop terrace serves excellent food.
Good price per day
Room is wide and clean.
Good breakfast
Late checkout possibility
Hotel is located the main road.
Free visit to a sandy beach with your room number every day.
Very quiet place day and night. One of the best hotels I have ever been in. Super helpfull and pro staff. Close to Coco beach and not far from city. Great. 11 stars out of 10:)
Excellent cheap/good value hotel for a city centre stopover. Ideal for access to the Zanzibar ferries which are just a few minutes walk. Good restaurants nearby too.
Clean, good facilities, including pool, TV and everything needed for self-catering. Good, central location between city centre and Oyster Bay. Great WiFi.
For Dar es Salaam and Tanzanian standard this is perhaps one of the best hotels. Even though some details are not entirely up to international standards.
