The city is known for its historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can explore winding alleys and bustling bazaars. The most amazing city to visit and stay for a few nights at the end of a relaxing East coast/beach holiday. The culture, the photograph opportunities, the local people were all so welcoming. We felt safe everywhere we went and we were so happy to have not met with 1 mosquito :) in 16 day7s we were there. We did so much in 3 days (Stonetown) including a private boat trip to Prison Island (just arranged this by ourselves down at the small port close to the "Beach House". ) A visit to Freddie Mercury museum too is a must as well as a tuktuk ride in the city. Some fabulous eating places too as well as The Beach House and "6 South" was another also Emerson Spice Rooftop was a hidden gem and we made it up all the stairs and got a great view.. Also enjoyed an amazing dinner at the Park Hyatt. All the prices were very affordable and the food especially the seafood which was our favourite was the best everywhere we went. A tip could be not to book BB but just a room and enjoy breakfast outside the hotel as our coffee was not good quality and there are so many lovely cafes around. The wooden doors attracted us everywhere we went and sure we took hundreds of photos. "Capetown" Restaurant at the port was a nice place we came across by chance with live music and good food and cocktails too. There was a night food market which was amazing to see although we didn't risk eating from the stalls. The locals were really friendly & we will definitely go back again.

It was lovely and we got to see the history of the slave trade (albeit sadly as it was a horrendous practice). The beaches are also very beautiful (Jambiani Beach was where we mostly went.) The spice farm tour and markets were lovely as we got all kinds of fresh spices. However, it is very tourist-centric. Payment is in dollars everywhere and people are always trying to sell you something. Feels very commercialised.

Dirty, smelly, full of approaching ~beach boys, sellers and beggars. Much more aggressive than up north. Mostly came for a Nakupenda tour. Nice place but be aware that it’s crowded - by lots of tourists and then of course even the aggressive up in your face wanting to touch you sellers there too. The more upscaled beach hotels and restaurants are nice though.

Stonetown is a cute, small city with arab influence.

Stonetown is a cute, small city with arab influence. It is worth taking the boat to prison island to learn more about the history and see the turtles. 2 days is sufficient. In the evening there is a night market with different food stalls.

Lots of shops in Stonetown selling the same.

Lots of shops in Stonetown selling the same. Plenty of souvenirs to buy. Check Darajani market for good bargains. Don't forget the spice market. Avoid shopping in Darajani street. Not for tourists. Relaxed lunches at the high terraces of the Swahili house and Emerson house. Supper at Lukmaan (reasonable and cheap), Masa Japanese Restaurant (good and reasonably priced), and Krishna Food House (good and reasonably priced).

The location and the team were outstanding. The owner Sadaat was extremely helpful organizing trips and gave us a lot of insides about stone town. The rooms were lovely and spacious with sea view exactly as advertised. Food was also delicious. We specifically choose smaller hotels during our holidays as we don’t like the big chains where you are just a number. Sadaat and his team really gave our time there a personal touch. We had a fantastic time at Archipelago Stonetown.

    1) its in stone town, walking distance to all touristy places in zanzibar city 2) they have a pretty clean aprrment with all appliances in kitchen in proper working condition where you can even cook without any hassle. 3)great host and staff 4) normally there are many apartments in stone town but you get lost in the lanes, this one is right next to port and all places accessible easily without having to wonder around the small stonetown lanes.

Nice hotel right on the beach and next to the port. Great location with everything in easy walking distance from the hotel. Our room was spacious and clean with a huge ornate bathroom. Beds were big and comfortable. TV, Fridge and a Kettle in the room with some tea and coffee provided. Breakfast was ok. The pool was nice with plenty of shaded areas and a great way to cool off after walking around the back streets of Stone Town.

Boutique style hotel close to the beach in Stone Town. Beautiful converted old Court House, lots of original features but the rooms are quite small, especially when you come from a beach resort hotel. The staff were very helpful, we just used it as a base to explore Stone Town for 1 night. Close to The Beach House where we would recommend for drinks and food. Also a nice Tanzanite shop opposite (next to the Park Hyatt).

This was our second time staying at Tembo. The hotel is perfectly located. Right on the beach with two pools and a great continental breakfast. Rooms are a good size and ours came with a balcony. We stayed in the annex building this time which was only a few mins walk from the main building. Staff are lovely and they even made sure we had a take away breakfast the morning we left as we had an early flight.

The staff is most welcoming and smiles every time you walk by. The rooms are nice with a dish of fruit. The breakfast has many choices and they aim to please. The restaurant food is wonderful! The hotel has a lot of Arabic accents and the pool and grounds are well kept. You can walk right into Stonetown. The hotel is right on the beach. I would stay here many times over.

The hotel is right at the center. It was very easy to get around however the check in process took some time but the staff were very helpful. The lunch chicken biryani meal at the restaurant was super 👌. It was my first time in stone town so I was alittle scared of security but Faisah at the reception was very helpful in getting me guides to shop for spices.
