The main purpose of going to Franschhoek is to eat in some of the fabulous restaurants. Apart from that there is not a lot else to do and it can be very hot making it uncomfortable just to walk around the village. If self catering there are very good grocery stores including Woolworths Food and a relatively new and modern Checkers. There is also a large Pick n Pay but it is a much lower standard than the other two which are more up market.

We love Franschhoek and could easily have stayed longer.
We love Franschhoek and could easily have stayed longer. We love wandering along Huguenot Street with its many shops and small restaurants and the market on Saturdays and Sundays. We visited Haute Cabriere, Mont Rochelle and Mullineux & Leeu. We enjoyed an excellent lunch in all and had the best wine tasting in Mullineux & Leeu. On the way out we had “high tea” (at 10.30 am) in Orangerie at Le Lude which was quite amazing

Loved Franschhoek but 2 or 3 nights here would probably be enough as town is lovely but small. A great base for doing the winre tram and visiting the various wineries but many can also be reached just as easiliy from Stellenbosch which seemed a little livelier and more going on. Liked the market with drinks and music.
Drivers take note the pass into Franschhoek (the R45 from the R43 or R321) is closed 0900-1700 weekdays until the end of Feb 2024!

Franschoek is a gem!
Franschoek is a gem! Fabulous places to stay, a most beautiful Main Street with so much character, beautiful shops and restaurants, and the Wine Tram. This runs like clockwork and is a perfect way to visit several wine estates without needing to use your car. The estates are fabulous and you stop as long as you like, hopping on the next tram when you are ready!

The wineries around Franschhoek were lovely.
The wineries around Franschhoek were lovely. Would also recommend a visit to the Pigcasso winery - I know this seems weird for those there for the wine and food but for some reason the place is very nice and chill. If you are in town on Sunday, the markets were great and you could get coffee and listen to music.
I would suggest hiring a car particularly if your hotel is not in the main street. But there is a tram which takes you to the different vineyards and seemed very regular.
As to vineyards, we had a lovely breakfast at Boschedal winery.
An absolutely idyllic boutique hotel located very close to the franschhoek wine tram and franschhoek town. The staff are incredibly welcoming and accommodating. They go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable. The rooms are decorated with beautiful touches that really make this accommodation stand out as 10/10. The garden and pool area are immaculately manicured and filled with beautiful flowers. We would definitely recommend this as an outstanding place to stay whilst visiting franschhoek. Thank you Maison Cabriere!
Exceptionally well located. Close enough to walk to anything you’d need, yet away from the noise of the Main Street.
The hosts were incredible, exceptionally comfortable room and amazing bathroom with underfloor heating.
Solar panels ensured we didn’t experience any form of LoadShedding.
The breakfast also outdid breakfasts at well known/established hotels in the area.
Overall 10/10. Will definitely be staying here on our next trip to Franschhoek!
Location was perfect, walking distance to the main station of Franschhoek Wine tram. The place was really clean, with all the appliances you need for a small dinner, perfect for a couple, the jacuzzi experience was awesome, and the view of the wine lands and mountain was stunning.
I will definitely recommend 10/10. Don’t hesitate to book it, will definitely come back. 🙏🏻🔥
Exceptionally good hotel in beautiful surroundings. Could not have been happier of our choice of hotel in Franschhoek. True five star experience with attentive staff, clean, spacious and comfortable rooms. Loved the beautiful bathtub. Pool was clean and whole pool area and gardens really well kept and beautiful. Great location in the middle of Franschhoek.
Great hotel in Franschhoek - perfect location in town and just what we needed for a 1 night stay. The pool area was so lovely and relaxing - a proper little sun trap to relax in after a day of wine tasting. Staff super friendly and looked after our bags whilst we were out and before the room was ready.
Very spacious room with a cozy roof and very comfy matrasses. The property is calm and silent but still close to Franschhoek which makes it a perfect location to relax while having the opportunity to explore and dine out easily. The complementary wine tasting on the nearby wine farm was very nice!
It is a fabulous boutique hotel. Declan and the team went beyond expectations, making sure everything was on hand with fantastic attention to detail. Breakfast was indeed legendary. We usually stay in different accommodations in Franschhoek, but no longer. We'll be returning to Akademie.
Tastefully decorated apartments in a beautiful, quiet property including a small swimming pool, terrace and two secure parking spots. A lot of care is being given to welcoming and looking after guests. Thank you Florence, Moses and CJ for making our stay in Franschhoek a relaxing one.
The perfect gateway to explore the beautiful surroundings of Franschhoek. The hotel has everything I hoped for: history, beautiful gardens, nice pool, personality, tranquility and very spacious rooms. Above all, the owner was very helpful en friendly and breakfast was fantastic!
just outside of Franschhoek and opposite the La Motte wine estate. everything is just 5min away (make sure to have a car).quiet and excluded with a lovely host and staff. breakfast was freshly prepared (maybe a little late from 8am)
The hotel is very close to the centre of Franschhoek and therefore within easy walking distance of the restaurants and shops. We found the hosts and staff to be most helpful which made our short stay very relaxing and enjoyable.
- The wonderful position of this beautiful hotel in the middle of the mountains but nearby Franschhoek
- The big sized and charming equipped room with great terrace
- The friendliness of the personal and good breakfast
Comfortable, well equiped for self catering, lovely host, a few sockets had backup battery power during load shedding.Nice pool ,good patio, secure parking, moderrn deco. Excellent all round . Would return no problem
We had a incredible time at Franschhoek Boutique Hotel, beautifully decorated rooms, extremely clean, perfectly located. The warm and friendly welcome from the reception made us feel right at home. 5☆ breakfast
This was a great little boutique hotel in a great location. It's located right across the street from a Woolworth's market and is in the center of town. The staff were wondèrful and I can't wait to go back!
10/10! We will absolutely stay again on our next trip to South Africa. The hotel is stunning, and the staff are so helpful, they even have a free shuttle to take you to any restaurant/wine farm nearby
It was very comfortable, had fantastic views of the Franschhoek mountains, a sheep pasture and vineyards, and we were welcomed with a bottle of wine and several extras. Definitely recommended.
