Franz Josef is a must do destination when travelling in the South Island, especially if you like the outdoors. Got up early and travelled to Lake Matheson to watch the sunrise - possibly the best experience in all our years of travelling. The cafe at Lake Matheson was brilliant as well and Alice May restaurant in Franz Josef was brilliant for dinner.

A must see on any New Zealand itinerary, but one day is sufficient. Perfect for adventurous young people who like walking, not so much for older persons. The helicopter ride was bit of a rip-off as the weather closed in and we could not land on the glacier. Although they did give us a little refund, it was not up to our expectations and very expensive 20 minute ride.

Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora...
Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora and fauna. The walks were amongst the most scenic and beautiful we’ve ever experienced. Only downside, which I feel needs to be more clearly explained to visitors, is that the glaciers themselves can only be seen and viewed from the lookout points if it is a clear day without low hanging cloud. We were disappointed to not actually see the Franz Josef Glacier nor the Fox Glacier from the fartherest reach of the walks. Environmentally, we were not prepared to fly/chopper to see the glaciers from the air. Nevertheless, the walks themselves are a must do, driving through the region is gob-smackingly beautiful and the walk around Lake Matheson a must see.

Our helihike was cancelled due to weather, so we did a quad bike in the rain. IT WAS AWESOME! We smiled for the entire two hours.
There is a sweet chapel for quiet and reflection.
We never saw the glaciers as it rained for three days straight which was so sad.
The grocery and a few restaurants were enough to find something to eat.

We were unlucky with the weather, as there was low cloud and some rain. We took a couple of walks to see the glacier from viewing points which were really good. Paths were very good, not muddy, and there were signs to explain the ecology and history.

A small town with a couple of shops and plenty pubs/restaurants. The glacier is 7kms from the town - drive to the car park and then there’s a short walk to the viewing area - you’ll need binoculars or a long lens to truly appreciate the beauty of the glacier. Fox Glacier is 30 mins away and again there’s a pretty uphill walk to a viewing area. You can get a helicopter onto the glacier but they are $$$.
Lake Mathewson is worth visiting while in Fox, park at the car park and walk 30/40 mins to the jetty. Beautiful especially at sunset but use bug spray as there are lots of midgies!
This was a beautiful place to stop and enjoy Franz Josef and Fox glaciers. We arrived in the dark and were greeted with a happy smiling face and a refreshing drink of Kiwi juice and a hot washer.
Our room was incredible - so spacious and comfortable. The body products were simply fantastic. The smell was incredible.
We ate in the restaurant for our dinners and breakfasts (2 of each) and the food was delicious and the service was incredible.
I would highly recommend this to anyone. I would certainly return (we didn't want to leave).
Bernie & Gerard were magnificent hosts! They made every effort to make us feel at home and tend to our needs. Louise and I were most impressed with their highly personal engagement, beautiful home, and are especially grateful for all of their assistance and guidance during our stay. We would be delighted to stay there again should our travels ever take us back through Franz Josef.
Very Close to the town restaurants and attractions … such as wild life centre with two Kiwis for visitors to observe in a dark room. Also glacier display was very informative in the same centre. Ticket expensive for a single visit but they get round this by offering further visits in 48 hours. Though unsure you would want to return so soon … it maybe a charity so a good cause.
The rooms (more like chalet units) were very cosy and well furnished. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and gave excellent advice about when it would be feasible to visit the Franz Josef glacier. Very good value for money! Would have loved staying one night more if we had more things to do in the area.
Well done to the hotel staff, Jim, who is passionate and informative to explain to us the procedures of road closure from Wanaka to franz josef thru highway state 6 during the road closure period. We managed to follow the convoy on time and reached the hotel safely. KUDOS!
Fantastic motel in the heart of Franz Josef. Large rooms with everything you need, our family had a very comfortable stay. Staff were very kind and helpful. Highly recommended. Perfect if your on a road trip with a car as you can park right outside the room
The Deluxe Two Bedroom Spa Treehouse was nicely decked out, with two large bedrooms and bathrooms. The outdoor spa was a lovely addition. The location is in the heart of Franz Josef, walking distance to all the restaurants, shops, tour offices, etc.
We enjoyed the stay at Franz Josef Glacier Aspen Court Motel .
The room is spacious and tidy ,the location is convenient to all amenities, cafes ,Alice May Restaurant etc.
Highly recommend if you decide to stay in Franz Josef Glacier Village.
Excellent reception staff. Polite and helpful. Bed was comfortable. Enough pillows. Nice restaurant. Food was excellent. Several walks in the area. Few small churches, too. Glacier near by and excellent food places, too
Scenic Hotel Franz Josef Glacier was temporarily closed at the time we stayed, so we were transfered to Te Waonui Forest Retreat. Everything there was really great.
Nice stand alone cabin right outside Franz Josef. Could hear a little road noise off the highway but that died down before we went to bed so was not an issue.
Very central in Franz Josef, beds were extremely comfy and walking distance to most of the cafes / restaurants. Plenty of parking available. Friendly staff!
Clean, good sized room. Everything you need for a night's stay at the glacier. Walking distance to town center, restaurants and Glacier Helicopter tours.
