Queenstown's 'little brother' really has nothing to be shy about. It's smaller, less commercialised than Queenstown, but also has a more relaxed vibe. The lake is beautiful, there are plenty of outdoor activities but without the relentless drone of jetboats etc Didn't play golf but the course looked good. We did a winery tour, went horse riding and generally soaked up the relax. Coffee at Ritual was excellent, as was the beer at Speights Ale House. Also had a great meal at Bistro Gentil, and I should note that the staff at all these locations were great - friendly, efficient. Wanaka report card: A+

Wanaka was our favourite stop on the south island - after an initial overnight stop, we went back for another 5 days. Wanaka is big enough to have all you could reasonably needs, but lacks the hustle and bustle (gross overcrowding) in Queenstown. Adventure and exploring opportunities are many and the locals are incredibly friendly and welcoming.

Great little town in a stunning setting.

Great little town in a stunning setting. Lots of choice for food. We had a really different and delicious breakfast at Big Fig and an excellent meal at Kika ( great menu, quite expensive but worth it as a treat). Great bars along the lake front. The Wanaka Tree is obviously very popular so expect the beach to be busy around that end. We went back at sunset and groups of photographers are all set up waiting. Great facilities in town, lots of interesting independent shops so makes a change from the usual tourist shops seen everywhere else we have visited in NZ. Lots of parking available when we were there in November. Loved our visit

Not too big, not too small, lots to do.

Not too big, not too small, lots to do. Lovely lake with lots of shore walks, great views, we didn’t take the longer walks. But I would stay in Wanaka proper, not Lake Hawea, it was a little too quiet, and windy. although restaurant there had excellent food. We had great food outside at Lakeside restaurant also.

Wanaka is a lovely central Otago town with fantastic scenery. It has grown alot in the last few years - no longer a small sleepy town on the lake for kiwis to stay but still a great place to holiday in. Lots to do for the adventurers in both summer and winter.

We were there in Full Winter. So 2deg.

We were there in Full Winter. So 2deg. The feeling after a week in Queenstown, was Wanaka was Calm and Peaceful by comparison. More of a laid back vibe. As far as views, That Wanaka Tree adn the backdrop of the mountains over the lake were stunning. Will def plan the next trip around this as a central location.
