Just fabulous - Beautiful lake and lovely town -we went to three different restaurants and had three superb meals. The drive to Milford was AWESOME and a fantastic cruise with unbelievable scenery - this must be the most impressive place in New Zealand
Te Anau is my favourite place to get away for a quiet Yoga Weekend. Great facilities, plenty of places to eat, relaxed town with non of the frenetic noisey coming and goings like Queenstown. Beautiful serene lake and Mountains. Great Walk to Doc Bay just a couple of hours return. You get to experience our best nature walks. Ask any local and they will give you the best tips. The Sandfly Cafe does the best brunches catering for Vegetarian and Vegan. We dined at the Thai Restaurant and it was divine. Walking if the only way to get around Te Anau.
We were there when it rained most of the time so not the perfect time. Not a lot to do in Te Anau on wet days. Recommend Escape Room. A couple of nice restaurants - Redcliff and Fat Duck were very good. Very nice golf course. Not the easiest place to drive around though, with little lanes everywhere. Very pleasant drive to Milford Sound - would have been spectacular if weather behaved itself. Only 2 hours drive from Queenstown so easily accessible.
Loved Bailiez restaurant for great coffee, fantastic good value food especially the seafood chowder which was sublime served in a huge bowl, and most importantly ample selection of diverse seafood (not a sign of potato cubes thankfully). Staff were efficient, attentive and friendly. An unbelievably memorable experience taking the Doubtful Sound day cruise which offered a crossing with commentary of Lake Manapouri, then a coach trip with commentary across land to the deep water cove where the 3hr cruise through Doubtful Sound, including just entering the Tasman Sea where we could observe colonies of seals. Totally memorable day. For what we got, the quality of the service and the modern well equipped modes of transport, it was very good value for money. Something not to be missed when travelling to Wanaka, Queenstown or Te Anau, though the latter is only a 15 min drive from the start of the experience in Manapouri.
My previous visit to Te Anau was in 1956 on my honeymoon. Then it was just a very small with a Government owned hotel that burnt down just after we departed. It has improved immensely in the intervening ears.
A charming and peaceful little town that is definitely worth a stop on a road trip or tour of the Fiordlands. There are lots of trails to walk and some activities on and around the lake. There are some nice restaurants but it’s not a foodie destination.
Te Anau
The staff was incredibly helpful, and we had great food/service in the restaurant. They were also happy to accomodate our last minute packed lunch request at 6.30am - even though the kitchen wasn't open, and staff had only just arrived. Location was perfect for visiting Milford Sounds, with town only a short drive away!
The room with lake view. We had a meal in the restaurant and have to say it is one of the best meals we have had and we are not young so have been around a while. We wish we had booked for two nights and will recommend you to many relations and friends. We were also upgraded which was kind.

The location was wonderful...walkable to the lake and to town so once we parked in our own carport, we didn’t need the car in Te Anau. The owner Mary was friendly and knowledgeable.
