Driving to Milford Sound can be tricky or not even allowed in a private car. Instead, drive to Te Anau and spend a couple of nights. Take the tour bus in the morning, and enjoy good food and shopping upon your return. Drive back to Queenstown the next day.
Lovely place for a weekend stop - bit quiet post COVID-19 with lots of places and activities closed but that is our current reality. The Oak Tree Cafe was perfect for brunch, the bird sanctuary is a nice to do and the walk on the lakefront was "refreshing".
Loved the walks around lake. Drove to milford and went scuba diving with descend dive. Great skipper and dive master. Great local knowledge. Took walk to second hut on keppler track. Nice walk to hut. Lake manapouri was beautiful. The beach forest was amazing and knowing some of locations were part of lord of the rings made me feel proud to be a new zealander in a beautiful country.
Te Anau is the drive-through town from Milford Sound to the rest of the South Island, but don't write it off as a holiday destination in its own right. It is centrally located to some of the greatest tourist destinations in New Zealand.
A beautifully presented town, with good facilities and is a gateway to so many activities - including Milford and Doubtful Sound, walking tracks. Only 2 hours from Queenstown on a very good road. Do it!!
Enjoyed three hour cruise of Lake Te Anau and its south fjord with Peter (leaving from dock where sea plane is), who is very knowledgeable and took us on a hike on an island in Lake Te Anau to hidden lakes. Book the cruise in the sea plane office. Also did 30 km lake to lake bicycle ride from Lake Manapouri to Lake Te Anau, renting bikes from very helpful Darius at Wild Rides. He provided transport to the trail head. Enjoyed dinner at Kepler's (an Argentinian/Chilean/NZ restaurant) and at La Toscana (simple Italian), breakfast at the Sand Fly where there are tables inside and out. Did not enjoy dinner at MacKinnon House, a restaurant in the Distinction Hotel. It was overrated, had ordinary food, and incompetent service.
We had a "Luxury Cottage" with a group of 6. Everything was spacious & the furniture was modern. The beds were super comfortable as well coz I love soft beds! Having a separate shower was another added bonus for our group. The entire place was clean, comfortable & had everything we needed. Change of linen daily was a bonus & town is walking distance.
We have stayed at 10 different hotels and motels throughout New Zealand.....all of which were 4 stars as a minimum. Distinction Luxmore Hotel has been the very best and most comfortable accommodation we've found in the whole of New Zealand. Congratulations on a great job. Highly recommend it
The best motel I have ever stayed at. Superb comfortable bed; spotless throughout; excellent bathroom (including a bath); plenty of space; great facilities including decent plunger coffee; uninterrupted view across Lake Te Anau. Most importantly in the depths of winter: outstanding heating.
Very good hotel, we have a small child left with sunglasses and headphones in the room, and finally the hotel owner gave us a courier to Christchurch, but did not charge us the courier fee, thank you again! Come back to Te Anau and still choose to live here.
The location within Te Anau was good, decent shower pressure, they let us check in early as we were heading up to Milford Sound for an afternoon cruise. Size of the lounge and bedroom was more than your standard motel which was nice.
The room and bathroom were spacious, the location is quiet and the staff was so nice and accommodating. It was a great place to stay before heading out on the Kepler Track and we’d be back if we came to Te Anau again
Great private studio highly recommend! Excellent location just outside Te Anau. Bed, amenities and shower are excellent. Breakfast provided is a great bonus! Thanks

The managers are friendly and helpful with advice on hikes to take and places to eat. The rooms are spotless with everything you need. They come in daily and clean up. We made a great dinner there one night ( the waits at the restaurants are long during the holiday season). We had everything we needed. There amid a nice walking path down to the lake and a nice walk into town. A must stay with family. We stayed with our two children (18 and 21) and it was perfect for all.
We had an amazing stay, loved our little chalet, everything was perfect, warm, inviting, cozy and incredible views. The spa pool was amazing and the setting was very special. Loved this place! Planning to come back again - thankyou! Highly recommend this place!
Met nice and kind people at the property. The showers & toilets were near the room. Good spacious kitchen & dining room. The location of the property is superb because it's a 6 minutes drive to the Kepler track car park.
