Motel would have been excellent except for several things that needed repair - eg loose toilet seat, bathroom door would not shut, light bulb out in lounge, electric blanket not working on one of the beds, heat pump very noisy. management need to pay more attention to detail
We eat at The Redcliffe Cafe and the food was excellent and moderately priced in a nice ambiance. We also enjoyed breakfast at the Sandfly Cafe. Drive to Manapori and see the Smallest bookshop in the world where the owner's biography is for sale. Even better take the overnight trip from there to Doubtful Sound.
I think you need 3 days to allow maybe the Milford Sound trip, Doubtful sound and the glow worm caves and a day walk in the Kepler track. If you want an extra day just to chill out and enjoy the town it is worth it. The scenery is superb, there are nice places to eat if wanted.
Te Anau is so uncluttered yet has many of the opportunities provided by Queenstown. Walking and biking tracks are literally at your doorstep. The DOC bird sanctuary gave us the opportunity to get up close to Takahe and Kaka. Just 20km from Manapouri ,Te Anau offers alternatives for almost all activities you might pursue.
Te Anau is such a beautiful area with so much to do for nature lovers. There are plenty of walks, and a really cool bird sanctuary. The lake is really nice and good for a swim if you don't mind the cold. Nearby there is some really impressive sites, the Te Anua glow worm caves are must, and also head over to Milford for a cruise.
Your gateway to one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand. Our main plans were to walk the Milford Track and visit Doubtful Sound, and after doing those we enjoyed the area so much we stayed an extra few days. A lot of great restaurant options as well, we definitely came home fatter.
It is a 3star lodge in a small township (Te anau). We were allocated a room in a new building. The room was very spacious and we loved the bed and amenities in the room. The guy in the reception was super nice by turning on the heater prior to our arrival, hence the room was warm and comfy when we entered. There was not any cafe or restaurants in walking distance though, however you can drive around to nearby restaurants in 3-5mins. We went there during winter time (off peak season) thus it was very quiet with less number of tourists.
We had booked a night at the Kingsgate Te Anau when our plans were thrown into disarray by torrential rain & highways being cut in NZ. We thought we would have to cancel & lose the money due to Kate cancellation but the staff at the Kingsgate especially Nicola & Angel couldn’t have been more helpful. We were able to shift the booking & see Milford Sound after all. Their friendliness and service was outstanding !! The hotel is comfy with a slight retro vibe. Thank you !!
Te Anau
Very spacious and modern accommodation. Bigger than we needed but difficult to find anywhere in Te Anau as very popular destination. Initially disappointed that we do don't have a lake view and would have been helpful to have been clearer about this. However, the accommodation more than made up for that. Central location and easy to walk into Te Anau. Some tour companies for Milford Sound will offer free pick up / drop off directly to the motel. Would thoroughly recommend.
Te Anau
The lodge had a real old world charm about it that I have not experienced in any of my travels. Mark, our host, is charm personified and spared no effort to make us comfortable from the moment we entered his lodge. So tastefully decorated, with each item and piece of furniture located with great thought. The old nunnery has really come alive under Mark. I encourage folk to visit Te Anau and stay with Mark...you won't regret it.
Te Anau
This motel had everything a family of 4 could need. We had a two bedroom unit with a full kitchen, comfortable beds & pillows and cosy living area. The unit was very warm, quiet and exceptionally clean. The host was lovely and gave us lots of info and recommendations about the local area of Te Anau. Lakefront was accessible through a short walkway opposite the motel. We would stay again, if ever down this way.

Everything about the Alpine View Motel was lovely. We had a great stay. Bed was very comfortable and the room had everything we needed. Owners were very attentive and helpful. Great location for walking to supermarket, local shopping area and pubs for great value meals. 5 minute walk to Lake Te Anau which is stunning. Laundry available with tumble drier!
Very nice spacious room with two double beds with a view of mountains. Hotel is located in the middle of town and within walking distance of everything in town. Staff very friendly and polite. Te Anau is a good place from which to visit Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound. Breakfast was included in the hotel room price.
Our second time staying here. A good reliable location for a few nights to explore the Te Anau area. Room had a decent bed & bathroom, also a few in-room supplies like silverware, hotpot, etc. Communal kitchen area is good. Staff are very friendly and very helpful. Room heater was amazing and works fast.
What a gem this place is!!! Our apartment was across the street for Lake Te Anau, we had a balcony, sliding door so view was awesome! The apartment was well equipped for cooking, they supplied tea, coffee ect. Bed was very comfortable and had a heating mattress pad that was so good for my bad back!
Te Anau
