Perfect place for 3 nights. We hired bikes and peddled the entire island and included several hikes. All great. Beaches are pristine and great for snorkelling. Highly recommend the entire island and its activities to everyone.
Rottnest is very relaxing and has maintained its unique identity and charm without becoming over commercialised. The quokkas are the star attraction but lots of other interesting activities on offer. The bike riding is also great exercise.
While nature, the ocean and the views were spectacular the facilities and amenities need maintenance and attention, the administration of accomodation of individuals need to be clearly understood by Guests in a shared amenity and facility setting. My response to these facts can only be explained in feedback and concluded, have been overlooked and somehow accepted as the normal but lead to Guests stays. compromised both mentally and physically.
Rottnest Island is just beautiful, the many bays are outstanding. more suited to those who are able to walk or cycle, although the hop on/off bus is a good alternative. If toilets can be installed, then so should water stations. The issue with Rottnest is the cost - OUTRAGEOUSLY EXPENSIVE. EVERYTHING on Rottnest is overpriced, it is becoming a rich man's playground. Had need to visit the medical centre. 1ST CLASS, very impressed. Overall, a beautiful place , becoming out of the range financially for people.
Disgusted at the state of the Quokka and how visitors and Rottnest staff treated them. We witnessed very unhealthy Quokkas eating paper and rubbish. We witnessed visitors feeding them all kinds of food not suitable for them, people kicking them out of the way, touching and patting them despite countless signs not to do this!! A ranger even drove past some Asian women feeding and petting a Joey in the mother's pouch!! The mother is likely to discard the joey and it will not survive! My last visit to Rottnest was in the early 2000 and I am shocked at the decline in numbers. It is offensive that the tourist operations and ferries exploit the Quokka by using warm and fuzzy pictures of them to advertise and lure visitors to the island. The island has become an exploitative money making venture, the amount of accommodation on the island now is obscene. It takes away the beauty and the nature from the island. The island, nor most of the visitors, have no respect or regard for the history, flora and fauna that was Rottnest Island!!
Rottnest Island is a "must do" if you are in Western Australia. The resort/nature preserve island is just a fabulous place to visit. Hints: the island is NOT flat. Try to get an ebike to explore the island, esp. if you're used to one, or aren't an avid bicyclist! You cannot rely on Pedal & Fin to have ebikes so try to get that arranged through one of the ferry services or providers BEFORE you go to Rottnest. Bikes and feet are really the way to get around the island and to visit its various beaches. The bus is a one direction loop so can take a while... Great places to snorkel, with "snorkel trails," although in Sept. the water was too cold for us. The main grocery story has just about everything, food, wine to snorkeling equipment and souvenirs. The Bakery is good for breakfast through lunch. Note that if you are staying overnight in Rottnest that dinner offerings can be limited and expensive. We chose the pub food at the Hotel Rottnest for dinners. Also, don't forget the walks and talks provided free by the Rottnest Foundation docents. Daily, and great fun! You will find all that information at the Visitor Center.
