Loved the quiet setting, country views and wildlife. It was “glamping” at its finest and the owner was simply marvelous.

The location was perfect to see all Mt Field had to offer. The room was spacious, clean and modern with all cooking equipment you needed. It had a good warm air conditioner and the ramp made access easy.

It is a simple hotel in rural Tasmania with shared facilities. It was exactly what we were looking for on a trip from Devonport to Hobart a place to rest before the last part of the trip. The staff could not do enough, gave both of us a bottle of water and a packet of chips for my teenage son for nothing.

A cute heritage cottage on beautiful country grounds that included other heritage buildings (school house) and llamas! Wendy, the owner was immediately responsive to any queries and personally came to say "hello" and make sure everything was okay. This is a gem in a great area north of Hobart (1.5hrs away) and on the way to Cradle Mountain or other points of interest on west coast of Tasmania. Highly recommend.

What Guests Said About Ellendale:

Our favourite part of our stay was Merino Cottage itself.

Our favourite part of our stay was Merino Cottage itself. Out the front, there is a wide open farm with green fields and sheep grazing peacefully. Out the back, there is a calm stream that feels almost completely private, with a kayak and paddles available for a relaxing time on the water. The entire setting is quiet and deeply calming. Inside the cottage, everything feels warm and comfortable, with a bathtub and a fireplace that make it easy to slow down and truly rest. When it comes to food, although Ellendale is a rural area, Pip thoughtfully prepared snacks and breakfast in the fridge, so we never had to worry about going hungry. If you feel like eating out, Hamilton is about a 20 minute drive away, and the local pub serves incredibly good food that is well worth the trip. For transport, we would recommend having a car. The roads are in good condition, but it is important to be mindful of speed limits and the possibility of sheep or wildlife along the way. Arriving during daylight hours makes the drive more relaxed and enjoyable. For young couples like us, we would highly recommend staying for two or three nights rather than just one. Spend your days by the river or taking gentle walks, your afternoons relaxing on the deck with a book, and your evenings unwinding with a bath or a fire. It is a place that truly allows you to slow down, reconnect, and create beautiful memories together.

Wish we had have stayed for longer.

Wish we had have stayed for longer. Host was absolutely beautiful and made an extra effort with all of her small touches to make this a truly memorable stay. Will definitely stay here again, spending time using the kayaks on the river and relaxing in this peaceful location. Highly recommend Hamilton Pub 1826 for dinner and Aunty Vs cafe for coffee. Great place to stay of hiking at Mount Field.

Just be mindful you are staying on a working Merino Farm and not near shops. Bring in the majority of your food you need. The peace, quiet and solitude was why we chose Merino Cottage and we were delightfully pleased with our stay. We could have stayed another night!
