In spite of the not well indicated detours, we had a lovely visit to Texture, the linnen and flax museum, that we can heartily recommend to visitors to the area. We could have done with another hour or two to extend our visit.
Although we had planned to stay for the Dog Show, the added bonus is the delightful old town in Kortrijk. Although we did not use any of the restaurants in town, it was good to see the variation of styles available; we will certainly see more of the town next year!
Best place for everything! I even prefer it to Brussels and Bruges. History, culture, parks, restaurants, shopping, ease of movement (walking, cycling, driving, fantastic train connections)... it's got the lot! And don't get me started on the pâtisserie, or I'll rave for hours...
Highly recommend the "Secret Garden" near the Broeltorens, on Broelkaai. A lovely space filled with greenery, art, a small bar and extremely good vegan food in the pop-up restaurant. (We are pretty committed carnivores so we are hard to impress when it comes to vegan food. This was delicious.)
A delightful place. Full of innovation and experimental ideas. Our local council could do with visiting to see how you can take disused buildings and turn them into vibrant, exciting places for the young locals of all ages. There is a real exciting and engaging undercurrent to Kortijk. You just know that each day you will come across something else to enchant you. Would thoroughly recommend this city walk.
We visited first de Information desk and received a street map and a booklet with al the interesting things to visit and that is what we did. The map was not really necessary, because everywhere you could find the indication where you had to go.
Kortrijk
The B&B looks like your college apartment might have looked, if you had the money and time to fix it up the way you really wanted. It has books, comfortable furniture, artwork, and some whimsical features just thrown in because they seemed like a good idea at the time. This extends to the rooms, where the storage consists of wooden cubes hanging on the walls with rope. The B&B is located on the south side of the railway tracts. This puts in on the opposite side from the city center. However, Kortrijk is a compact town. Nothing is a long distance away. There is no elevator. The three rooms are arranged vertically, and so you might have to climb quite a few stairs if you are in the top one. Oliver will take care of your luggage. The rooms are labeled OYO, YOO, and OOY. We stayed in OOY, which is on the 2nd floor. It was plenty roomy to walk around in, although we could have used more space for our clothing. We had to unplug the kettle and the space heater to free up outlets to recharge our gadgets. This wasn’t a problem in September, but it may be in colder months. The plumbing fixtures and WiFi worked fine. Breakfast is continental, with cheese, cold meats, rolls, croissants, and plenty of choice in spreads. The orange juice was still inside the oranges when we sat down, and the coffee was made fresh by the cup. The most impressive part of the breakfast is the elaborate goblet of mixed fruit. If you like, Oliver will boil an egg for you. In short, this is a charming place to stay, and we had no complaints.
The location was excellent for us because we appreciate quietness and nature, so we enjoyed riding the rented bikes from downtown Courtrai to the hotel, about a 15 to 20 minutes leisurely ride. The owners of the hotel were pleasant and attentive. The room was spacious, nicely decorated, and the bed was comfortable. We were very satisfied.
If you want a characterless, corporate experience, stay somewhere else. If you want a unique personal experience, stay here. Hospitality is tops here. The owner is a gentleman and the business attracts an interesting, quality clientele.
Very inclusive breakfast; fruits, cereals, an omelette, cheese, sliced meat, freshly squished orange juice, coffee, nuts, ... All in all very nicely presented with a very friendly hostess.
