Suzhou is the "Venice" of China. Like many places in China it has much history and beauty. Had we the time, a walk along one of the main canals would have been great. Suffice to say we took a "gondola" ride and yes, the "gondolier" sang (a little). Tiger Hill and the Humble Administrator's Garden is worth the visit.
Don't be put off by first impressions, as you enter the city it may seem a bit bland at first. Once you walk around the central areas you'll find dozens of different areas that are all beautiful and great destinations in their own right. A truly beautiful city!
For this trip, we split our time between going and seeing sights and taking it easy in and around the two hotels we stayed in. Suzhou turned out to be a good option on both counts. If you want to get around, public transport, as in most large Chinese cities, is great and convenient. Even though it was National Week, most of the times we went out, it wasn't too crowded (which is saying something). We didn't try to go to all of the gardens, water towns and sights, but had a good time at the ones we went to. In fact, based on our experience and what I've read from other reviews, I'd recommend picking one water town (we had a nice time and also enjoyed the show in Zhouzhuang) and one garden (I don't remember the name of the one we went to at the moment, but I think most are good and similar to each other), and at least go downtown to see the 'pants' building and walk along the lake to enjoy the lights and the city's skyline at night. I wanted to ride on the ferris wheel, but apparently that area was closed for remodeling or something while we were there. I thought a dinner cruise might be nice, but we couldn't find one. However, there were quite a few good restaurants, western and local, that we enjoyed. Food-wise, at the very least you should try the húntún （馄饨）, which are basically the Jiangsu variety of dumplings, available at many local restaurants, and can be ordered wet (in soup) or dry (not in soup).
Good: good transportation; beautiful gardens and preserved canal-side neighborhoods; decent food; sense of adventure; modern SIP area around Xinghai Square and Times Square; safe; attractive people Bad: security theater at every subway station; occasional random passport checks; really hot in the summer; very loud and noisy advertisements playing everywhere you go, including public transportation; quite a few loud and noisy people too Neutral note: need to book tickets online in advance to visit Humble Administrator's Garden and Suzhou Museum
To review an entire city on my short stay would be unfair. I did like the Metro system. The Times Square district and the City Center district was amazing. Plenty of western food and shopping to be found, while still having great Chinese options available. This part of Suzhou is definitely westernized, much like other larger cities in China. If you are seeking a Chinese experience, with the Chinese culture and traditions, these are not the places to visit. Since I was on a trip to relax and recharge after working a difficult job this summer, it was perfect for me. I would not go to this part of Suzhou if I was a foreign tourist though. There are much more interesting places to visit in and near the city that gives you more of a Chinese experience.
Overrated. Dirty city, canals looked gross. Administrators Graden only highlight, but it was very crowded during mid-June visit. Of the 10 majors cities/tourist destinations I’ve been to in China, this one is at the bottom of my list.
Honestly, I loved the place in its entirety. It's right next to a beautiful garden, and the hotel itself has beautiful gardens. The view from out of my window was of a temple. It started to snow while looking out, and so I went out to explore the temple as quickly as I could. No one else around. One of the most jaw dropping moments in my life. The hotel itself seems to be basically a five star. I stayed at the Park Hyatt in Shanghai the night before and would honestly rate this place better (especially value for money)
an absolutely charming old mansion at the heart of a local neighborhood, very beautifully decorated and furnished with love. the staff was very very friendly and efficient, breakfast was very good. the location is brilliant: you get a feel for local life off sides the main stream, and can still walk to some of the sights such as suzhou museum, lion forest garden, shantang street, pingjiang street, etc. can highly recommend.
I came here for the second time. The European style of the hotel was quite appealing. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The free shuttle to the Humble Administrators Garden and the train station were super convenient. The hotel room was spacious and clean. Felt comfortable! The breakfast buffet offered a wide variety of western and Chinese food. The hotel restaurant had good pasta, too.
The location is great next to a park, a metro station and The Moon Harbour. Indoor swimming pool was nice and rooms were spacious. Breakfast was good with lots of both, asian and european choices. Suzhou SIP Area is very western, so If you are looking for more a "authentic" or Chinese area you should book another hotel. Pleasant stay all in all!!
The facilities were in excellent conditions and completely clean (though it should be said the toilets are traditional Chinese squatting toilets, in case anybody finds them uncomfortable). It was also quite close (at most half an hour walking distance) to the Humble Administrator’s Garden, the Lion Forest Garden, Suzhou Museum and Ping Jiang Street).
Staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was nice and clean, and spacious. The toilet was equipped with a shower and a bathtub, both were easy and comfortable to use. The location is great! 2 mins walk from the underground station, with a famous old street nearby, and one of the most famous gardens is also quite close to the hotel.
This place is old. Checking experience is trash. Confusing with the price bookings says $233, I actually paid $330. I will never stay in this hotel again or using bookings. W hotels is 10X better than intercontinental with almost same price. Highly unrecommended.
Excellent hotel in a perfect location with an imperial garden setting. Lovely to walk outside and within the hotel premises with picturesque views. Great and helpful staff and an excellent breakfast. Quiet, serene and a perfect setting for great pic shoots.
Great central location, historic house and rooms, nice quiet atmosphere. Very friendly owner, helped us plan and buy tickets to visit the amazing gardens in Suzhou. Overall a very pleasant stay. Thank you!
The aircon in our room wasn't working properly and the staff moved us to a different room. Location in old town Suzhou was perfect. Room was quiet and tidy.
Very accommodating and helpful. Nice breakfast. Hotel has a beautiful garden of itself. Easy to find by taxi and 10mins to downtown.
The only good thing was the location which was close to metro station. And the staff were trying to help but because of poor English language ability was not that much useful.
