Sofitel Xining, hotel in Xining

Offering a spa center and fitness center, Sofitel Xining is located in Xining, Qinghai, the Tibetan Plateau. Guests can enjoy the on-site bar and free WiFi in the public areas.

My wife and I originally booked three nights in a Junior King Suite and loved the entire experience so much we ended up staying 16 nights. The Junior Suite is huge and avails access to the beautiful and quiet Club level on the top floor for complimentary afternoon tea and Happy Hour, both of which offer excellent foods. The breakfast buffet selection and quality are terrific. To top it off, staff are extremely accommodating. Specifically, Mark Ma at the front desk and Tiffany Yang on Club Level were truly outstanding. An ample array of shopping, restaurants and parks are all close by. We are already planning our return to this terrific property.

The staff at the hotel were very helpful. I was not very happy with the first room that was provided. They arranged very quickly for me to move to another room that suited my needs.

Xining is a beautiful city squeezed down two river valleys...

Xining is a beautiful city squeezed down two river valleys between mountains. Just outside of town, the Kumbum Monastery is a highlight of many historic and religious sites. There are multiple exciting and beautiful destinations for day trips in varied landscapes. To the north there is the Huzhu Beishan Forest Park on the other side of a spectacular drive over a mountain pass. To the south we enjoyed a three night stay in Guide on the mighty Yellow River. The city and surrounding countryside is inhabited by a number of co-existing ethnic communities that remind us of the area's history as a border city and trading city. To the west are the famous high altitude lakes.

Get it while you can: the gateway to the ancient Silk Road,...

Get it while you can: the gateway to the ancient Silk Road, before it is destroyed by Chinese central government "progress" and the Belt-and-Road Initiative. Wonderful Islamic culture. Hope it lasts! Tibetan culture abounds as well. Pray for them.

Worth visiting the Tibetan Museum of Traditional Medicine...

Worth visiting the Tibetan Museum of Traditional Medicine and the longest Thangka painting in the world. It was a 25 min taxi ride from the Lete. The staff never heard of it despite the fact it was listed in Trip Advisor and Lonely Planet.

Most people come here for sightseeing of surrounding natural sights and temples. Because of my limitations, I ended up staying mostly in the city, hanging out in wonderful bookstores and cafes (Jihe Bookstore, though a bit far, about an hour by bus, but 20 by taxi, is the best! The surrounding area Tang Dao 637 is also really fun, I went three times!) and enjoying the sheer multiculturalism via food and people (and fashion!) watching.

This has to have been the most enjoyable hotel stay in a 60 year lifetime of world travel and many hundreds of hotel bed nights. Apart from the excellent facilities and very comfortable room it was the extraordinary helpfulness and generosity of the reception staff that made this short stay in Xining so memorable. We are indebted to Ning Tian, Wen Zheng, Ninh Chul and all the rest of the hotel's reception team for their kindness and help to this language challenged septuagenarian couple in their all too short stay in Xining.

The female staff at the hotel was exceptionally accommodating. She efficiently arranged for my pre-ordered mails upon my arrival in XiNing, and provided thorough guidance on commuting to the train station and to nearby markets for shopping clothes and fresh produce. Moreover, she graciously upgraded my room without any additional cost.

The location of this hotel is good. The staff is friendly and helpful (only because of them I decided to rate this hotel with 7, not 5). Everything was clean
