Trash is a noticeable issue in Taganga, Santa Marta, and the surrounding areas, which could use more attention. It's a fishing village, so don't expect much luxury.
It's a fishing village, so don't expect much luxury. There are many scuba dive shops so I assume diving is an important activity in the area. The nearest beach is full of boats, with a section at the far end for swimmers. Water wasn't that clear. Tried to snorkel but didn't see many fish. Beach area and main street along the lagoon trashy but looks beautiful from afar. Two restaurants nice, clean and relaxing others I would not consider. No shops to poke your head into that look inviting. 1 day as a pass through would be enough time but not as a destination. I stayed at Techos Azules overlooking lagoon area and a short walk to the beach/lagoon area which is ideal. I loved the view from the window, the apartment was gorgeous and clean. It had a breakfast bar, a fridge, excellent wifi. It was perfect for working and during the day I could walk to the beach and have lunch. The owner Jackie is wonderful and sweet. I thought that staying out of Santa Marta would be quieter but not so. There isn't a whole lot to do in Taganga. To get to Tayrona you have to go back to Santa Marta anyway, unless you get the boat from Taganga. A few days was enough. But the best thing about the hotel are the owners, Laura and her mother. They treat you instantly like family and this is why we had the best time. The rooms are beautiful, the beds very comfortable and the breakfast simply amazing. Everyday it changes and has an the most personal touch. The bathroom has only cold water, as is normal in many parts of Colombia, but because the weather is humid und hot, it's totally fine. There's free drinking water and you can chill on the rooftop terrace with view of the ocean. The hostel has different activities like yoga and game night.
