Colourful and historic, modern and colonial, local and touristic, Cartagena de Indias represents one of the liveliest Colombian beach resorts. Its character mixes cultures and peoples, including natives, Spanish, African and Arab. Its rich legacy granted its Old Town the recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
When the Spanish founded the city in 1533, the region had already been inhabited for thousands of years. It became an important port for the Spanish gold and a significant political centre. Echoes of those times can be seen throughout the historic centre, in the city walls, the San Felipe de Barajas Castle, and the colourful streets and colonial squares. Some of the best hotels in Cartagena de Indias can be found here.
Proudly Caribbean, Cartagena’s soul gives the rhythm to the streets, and the music coming out of cafés and restaurants is nothing but a physical manifestation of its collective spirit. Follow the beat, get to the seaside, and have one of your best holidays. Hotels near Cartagena de Indias’ beaches will be the perfect stage.

The people are Cartagena are so lovely and beautiful. I enjoyed the culture and history. The food was great and affordable. I found it easy to get around everywhere in Cartagena. Things were walking distance.
We loved the old walled city. The Mercado was rough and dirty with contending boom boxes that were not good for our eardrums. Eating out was very good with many places/restaurants to choose from and the food was tasty and not expensive. We loved the old convent and the area around it. The history is indeed interesting. The weather was bright but hot while we were there. The culture of the city is appealing and Cartagenians are proud to maintain it and not simply copycat American pop culture. We did a lot of walking and enjoyed the place. We felt safe and had nothing ontoward to contend with. The police were around but were never outwardly displaying arrogant control.
The walled city is a can't miss destination. A lot of street people and taxi drivers try to sell you drugs, which made it kind of scary at times. Everyone wants a tip for pointing out the destination you're headed to. A lot of cute hotels, shops and cobblestone streets.
Cartagena is a very unique experience. Beautiful architecture, colorful vibrant streets and tasty cuisine. I spent 5 nights and it was the perfect amount of time for me but if you want some more beach and island hopping time then add 2 more days to your trip. It has something for everyone and is also a great destination for the budget traveler. All in all I highly recommend it if you need a quick getaway. Uber is the best way to get around as it is very cheap and efficient. It gets a bit annoying with people pushing merchandise every two minutes but it’s their livelihood so best is to ignore them and not get upset about it.
The city is beautfull and have a lot of history, but is not a place to relax, everytime there is someone trying to sell you something, sometimes it´s disturbing, because you are talking with someone and each minute there is someone interruping you to sell something. And you need to be aware about the tours, becouse the ship tour that we booked with then was a really bad one, we stayed for 3 hours delivering and catching up people in many hotels and then after almost 3 hours we could enjoy the beach, but we stay there for just one and half hour, so we stay more time in the boat than in the beach. And the same for the city tour by bus, we spend almost 2 hours delivering and catching up people in many hotels an then we started the tour. Those tours were cheap but I think that it's not worth it, if you can try some more private one.
The historic city is quite nice (within the city walls that still stand) There are numerous squares, cathedrals and other points of interested to see. The historic city is very walkable and colorful. The beach is not great and not recommended
