Located where Europe meets the Middle East, Europe's Last Divided Capital is full of monuments reminiscent of its multicultural past and sad complexities of international politics and nationalism. A walk along the symmetrical Venetian Walls is an absolute must, along with a walk accross the Green Line, separating the turkish-cypriot populated north from the greek-cypriot south. Walled city is full of churches, mansions, mosques, markets, bathhouses, medieval inns and low-rise buildings that obviously have seen better days. Driving and parking can be chaotic. It's better to leave the car at many of the abundant parking spaces and explore the walled city on foot. Crossing to the turkish-occupied North is easier than ever. For a traditional cypriot tavern eat-till-you-drop-experience, head directly to Zanettos' Tavern, close to Ömeriye Mosque and Hammam. For more contemporary cuisine head to "The Market Company". For armenian Lahmadjun visit "Avo" and for excuisite cocktails go to "The Gym", all located inside the Venetian City Walls.
The main museum was good. The view of Nicosia from the 11th floor over Debenhams is worth seeing. The Laiki Gitonia area, which has been restored, is worth a visit, and has some interesting shops. The fact that it is divided city is of interest. There are other buildings and areas of interest in both the northern and southern parts of the city. On the downside, quite a bit of the city, especially in the northern part, is run down, and desperately needs restoration and smartening up. Overall, we did not find the retuarants that inspiring, compared to other places in Cyprus.
It is NOT a vivid capital, however is interesting to see the divided city. One day is absolutely enough for both of its parts (at least during the winter, which is when we were there) Go eat to the occupied part, it is much cheeper there. Museums are closed on Monday - incase you want to see them.
It was a lovely city but we found it very difficult to find a restaurant, if you didn't have a reservation. Some restaurant servers were quite arrogant about the assumption that one might ask for a table without (omg 😮) a previous reservation. Many restaurants didn't open until after 8, so if you wanted to eat earlier,it would be fastfood.
Amazing city, small enough to do everything by walk. I spent 2 full days in Nicosia, yet did not have time for a single museum, due to the amount of things to see in the city History, culinary treats, religious buildings, coffee culture: amazing !
Definitely go to Northern Cyprus (I could not get there cause of closed Covid borders) and do not forget your passport. Try Elysian vegan cafe!! Try 1 Euro charity shops! Try vegan coffee freddo (Cyprus coffee).
