A great city on the Rhine with lovely open spaces as well as old-town charm. Easily walkable, pleny of places to stop for a drink. My recommendation for a typical Kölsch and somegood food would be the Malzmühle near the Heumarkt. The NS-Dokumentation centre is a very important memorial that is worth a visit. We stayed twice, for two nights each.
We stayed twice, for two nights each. On the first trip we stayed on the town centre side of the river. On the second visit we stayed on the other side and saw the city bathed in sunlight from the other side of the bridge as we walked in, in the morning. The cathedral is incredible, it is my favorite, together with Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. We also visited the local zoo - really nice, I loved the clear signs with animals' names at each enclosure. For the city transport, we used the KVB-App and it was very helpful. It could be the center location for visiting all the interesting points around Cologne i.e. Bonn, Bruhl. The public transportation is great, but ticket purchase is a problem. In Germany, some ticket machine require PIN for CREDIT card purchase. There is a problem on street: (newly paved) street still with cubic cut ROCKs is hard for walking.
