An important harbour for centuries, Portsmouth counts with one of the busiest ferry piers in the United Kingdom, has the oldest dry dock still in use in the world. Its Historic Dockyard is home to famous British ships like Lord Nelson's flagship HMS Victory, the Mary Rose and the HMS Warrior.
In the picturesque Old Town you’ll find typical English pubs, coloured houses, and small independent shops. It also has a Fish Market provided by the city’s small fishing fleet. In Old Portsmouth is possible to find smaller hotels, B&B’s and guest houses, some of them not far from the ferry harbour.
The Gunwharf Quays are a modernly renovated shopping area, home to the Spinnaker Tower, while the centre has an ever-growing number of shops. Don’t miss Commercial Road and the Cascades Shopping Centre. Hotels in Portsmouth’s city centre allow you to be close to everything what the city has to offer.
For relaxing moments, Portsdown Hill allows panoramic views over the city and the Isle of Wight. During summer, its sandy beaches are a must.

Portsmouth is a really nice location. We stayed in Gunwharf Quay which is amazing. It's also in easy reach of the old town with it's fish market and pubs.
Gunwharf Quay is an amazing place, lots of bars, eateries, shops of all types.

Really liked the historical connections e.g Mary Rose Museum, Southsea Castle. Also very close to the Isle of Wight, with both frequent ferry & hovercraft services. You can also catch a ferry to France, seems to have a good local bus services. If your reasonably fit, most attractions are within easy walking distances and it's fairly flat. Great rail connections with frequent services to London. Also you can catch a ferry to France.
Adequate number of pubs and restaurants within the town. Plus there are small shops, bakeries, take-aways and cafes.
We stayed fairly close to the train station and there were a lot of closed shops e.g. Debenhams, which had broken windows and graffitti on it.

I loved the location and have enjoyed previous visits but this time I was disappointed with the room , it was small and stuffy , the window wouldn't open, and the toilet absolutely stank, it either had a drainage problem or hadn't been cleaned , whatever the reason it was very unpleasant, I did report to reception the morning of check out and she was interested in what I had to say and logged it , It just spoilt the experience

It is one of those places that has so much to offer, but little is said about it. The naval dockyard is fascinating, and there are some very good pubs and restaurants in the city. Also a very good public transport system. For shopaholics, there's the Gunwharf Quays, with all the usual chains.

The variety of attractions especially of historical significance is not to be missed. There are very good food and refreshment facilities to complement your visit. Allow plenty of time if you need to complete the whole tour of the docklands. Keep baggage weight lightweight as possible to help with fatigue issues.

Stayed in Southsea, and plenty to see and do.
Stayed in Southsea, and plenty to see and do. Beautiful lake, with lots to do, family friendly. Beach lovely and clean. About a 15 minute walk along seafront gets you to Clarence Pier, and bit further along Gum Wharf
From the outset I was impressed with this hotel, its great place to base yourself if youre looking to explore Portsmouth. Excellent location to both Portsmouth and Southsea and Portsmouth harbour Stations (if travelling by train). For the money this place is a gem! Great nights sleep, friendly staff and clean! - Would absoloutely stay again and recommend!
The Marriott at Portsmouth was a five minute drive from the port. We arrived late at 11pm, but was greeted by a very friendly desk clerk..Our room was bigger than we had anticipated, clean ++ Comfy bed, with convenient lighting.
Breakfast was good. Parking at hotel was reasonable at £5 a night, though we were not charged.
Good room with all the facilities you would expect - TV, tea/coffee etc.
Excellent location - very near Portsmouth Harbour Train Station, Gunwharf Quays and the Historic Dockyard.
Large range of options for breakfast - both continental and cooked.
Hotel was clean and comfortable, with private, secure parking (and public parking close by if necessary). Staff were very friendly and welcoming. The location is fantastic for the Historic Dockyards and Old Portsmouth, Gunwharf Quays.
Great location for easy access to Gunwharf Quays, Old Portsmouth, Southsea and the IoW. Cheap parking in the Gunwharf car park. The room was basic but okay.
The staff were pleasant and helpful.
