FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Been to York before so had done most of the attractions.

Been to York before so had done most of the attractions. Looked up more on this trip and some of the things you can see are amazing. There is so much to see and do for all ages and plenty of green spaces for a relaxing lunch/timeout.

York is a beautiful City but not light on your wallet.

York is a beautiful City but not light on your wallet. Parking is expensive for City Centre activities. There is plenty to do and all your usual stores as well as plenty of obscure and wonderful delights. The Shambles is great, if very busy. York minster is also a must see. But like I said before, you will need plenty of money to do everything. However, multi passes are available if you want to pack your day full.

There is so much to see and do in York and I always look forward to trips there. It has a fantastic atmosphere. I've been many times in recent years, but for the first time went on a riverboat last weekend which was just divine in the amazing sunny weather. Recommended. The city is lovely and compact, you can get round on foot very easily and take in the Minster, the City walls, the many museums and the famous Shambles. So many bars and restaurants, so many cool sights and some great shops. And it's as good in autumn and winter as in the brighter months. I'd like to go every weekend. Hell, I'd like to live there!

York was absolutely beautiful, it was our first time visiting We suggest doing the park and ride which we did so much easier than trying to find parking in such a busy place and I would say definitely cheaper x

The walking streets were fun to roam through.

The walking streets were fun to roam through. The cathedral was impressive. The best thing to see and do is visit the museum in the park by the river. The archeological treasures are impressive, and set up brilliantly for engaging everyone from the very young (4-6) to the very old (70-80s).

Such a lovely hotel to stay in. Staff super friendly and could not do enough when I had a small issue with my meal, replaced and drink on the house given! Beautiful breakfast and catering for dogs with water available, dog friendly rooms and full use of the foyer and reception area at night with them. Very relaxed evening at the hotel after a day in York. Perfect location for park and ride, 15 mins on the No2 bus into the city centre. Our second visit to mercury and will definitely be back
