Really nice comfortable stay. Spacious room, nicely decorated, with a big comfortable bed and a clean, modern ensuite bathroom. Lots of options provided to make yourself a cuppa which was appreciated. Easy self check in and self check out. Lovely communicative host. A few continental breakfast items available in the room - please note the cafe downstairs (independent from the guesthouse) has pretty limited hours so early risers need not plan to eat breakfast there

FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Beautiful historic city.

Beautiful historic city. Very easy to walk around and explore. Walking around the city walls, visiting the National Railway Museum and going on a ghost tour were my favourite. Lots of places to eat. I recommend Il Paradiso del Cibo on Walmgate. Have the seafood risotto.

You need three days to 'do' York. There is a York Pass.

You need three days to 'do' York. There is a York Pass. You need to work out if it's worth getting. The National Railway Museum is free and Clifford's Tower is English Heritage. Plenty of restaurants to choose from depending on your taste. Book your slot for many of the attractions online on their web site, eg. Jorvik Centre. If you go to the National Railway Museum, it is quite a walk to the entrance as they are presently making changes to the site.

Lovely city, excellent museums and art gallery and some...

Lovely city, excellent museums and art gallery and some superb historic buildings, like the Merchant Adventurers' Hall. The Minster is wonderful. It's a nice city to just wander around - it's not too big, so you can see a lot by walking, but there are buses and tours as well, and a rather cute train from the railway museum (which is well worth a visit). The museum park is a lovely place to simply sit and enjoy with a coffee or an ice cream; walking round the walls is very pleasant too. Lots to see and do - wish I'd had time for a river trip. I've always visited York on my own, it's a comfortable and friendly place for solo travellers.

York is a delightful town, full of friendly and helpful people and historical charm. We loved York Minster Evensong so much we went back the next day for a Guided Tour - worth every cent. This is the most incredible building we've ever seen - the Chapter House and famous East Window need to be seen to be believed. And while a bit touristy, Shambles is a good fun stroll as well. would go back again without hestitation.

The hotel is a listed building and has so much character. The rooms are all unique and the staff are amazing. Nothing is too much trouble. It is high end which represents the price, but is worth every penny. The location is fabulous, right in the heart of the city centre with some rooms overlooking York Minster. Breakfast is superb and there is a wonderful bar area and outdoor seating area which is always buzzing, providing a fabulous atmosphere. A wonderful place to stay!

A terrific country house hotel in an excellent location to spend a few days exploring the wonderful City of York. The hotel is just outside York but with a frequent bus service right outside to the City Centre, thus avoiding the hassle and expense of parking in York, it worked really well for us.
