We were 3 friends who came from Rome to see Assisi at Christmas time and we were not disappointed. The town was magical, especially at night. Our rooms were perfect. They were very clean. Beds super comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delicious, with a good selection.

Spiritual Sanctity in the Umbrian Hills

Assisi is world famous for the 2 saints – Francis and Clare – who were born here and subsequently founded Christian poverty movements. The tomb of the former is in the Basilica of St Francis, majestically located on a hill surveying the Umbrian countryside. Its graceful lines and powerful frescoes defy its 13th-century construction.

The Basilica of St Clare is from the same period and displays remains of the saint who inspired the Poor Clares. Between the 2 basilicas is the New Church, positioned where St Francis supposedly once lived, and the Cathedral of St Rufinus, dedicated to the saint who converted Assisi to Christianity.

Considerably older are the Roman villa remains near main Piazza del Comune, whose historic buildings house shops and pavements cafes on the site of the former forum. The columns of the Church of St Mary over Minerva were the entrance to a Roman temple.

Roman castle remains sit in the hills above Assisi, as does the more intact, medieval Rocca Maggiore which offers magnificent views over the town. Even higher is the Eremo delle Carceri, a stone hermitage where St Francis apparently preached to birds.

The cobbled streets ascending Assisi’s hills contain most of Booking.com’s accommodation options, including luxury hotels, cheap apartments and B&Bs near Santa Maria degli Angeli train station.

Assisi is a very nice medieval walled city full of Franciscan energy. Not to miss and it is highly recommended to stay few nights, which still are not enough to experience everything that Assisi offer. Good eateries to find in Assis. Great basilicas with great history and full of building craftsmanship to admire.

All the sights, and there are many, were a marvel to see. We did an excellent walking tour that lasted about 3/3.5 hours of all the major sights. I would highly recommend doing that. There's great public bus service down to the train station to go on day trips. We went to Perugia for the day, which was well worth it. We were in Assisi in October and the town was still full of tour groups so would definitely recommend visiting in the off-season like we did. Also discovered Assisi is home to the millennial saint, Carlo Acutis.

A beautiful, holy place which makes it special walking in the steps of St. Francis and St. Clare. The views are breathtaking of the surrounding countryside, and as you woukd expect, the hills and streets,are,quite steep. There are plenty of places to eat, although I get fed up easily with endless pasta and pizza. There are 14 Churches in Assisi; 5 of them are Basilicas so theres plenty of art, church furniture and frescoes to feast your eyes on.

It was a beautiful medieval city with no graffiti. many historic sites are very accessible. The food was the best I've had in Italy! Le Terrazze di Properzio was a fantastic restaurant - very good food!!

The architecture and rich historical sites within the city and beautiful surrounding countryside were definitively to my expectations . In several restaurant establishments the waiters/waitresses we disinterested and rude in attending the public .

The host was very gracious and helpful.

The host was very gracious and helpful. We arrived late because of car trouble on the road, and the host waited up to give us our room keys!! The continental breakfast was superb with a wide selection of food and beverages, and fresh fruit from the host's garden. All the places of interest were close enough to reach and easy to get around. All the churches were open for visitors. There were plenty of restaurants and gift shops in the area. I would definitely recommend this place to friends and family!!!
