Lovely small and old town which is the birthplace of st Dominic and the gastronomic heart of Umbria (think wild mushrooms, all sorts of pulses, summer and winter truffles, and every possible pork/boar product). Sadly many ancient buildings destroyed by 2016 earthquake but don't be put off - nobody died and little damage to more recent buildings. Visitors VERY welcome as economy needs help. Great excursions to the surrounding hills, breathtaking plain of Castelluccio, rafting. Local restaurants esp "al Teatro" recommended and good value.
Perugia was a good place to do day trips from to other villages in Umbria, many good restaurants, good chocolate made there. LaTaVerna is a good restaurant two other restaurant the hotel recommended were good and reasonably priced.Very clean place.
Spello is a great base for visiting the lovely walled medieval towns of umbria. Great food, art, architecture and friendly welcoming residents.
Great home base for touring Umbria. Tip: drive up to the old town if you plan to have dinner there. Restaurants do not begin serving until 7:30. The funicular quits at 8:00; couldn’t get a taxi or bus at 9:30 p. On a Saturday night! We had to walk down an old, long, dark service road at 10:00 p.m. to reach our car in the free train station car park!
Stunning city with fantastic history. We were visiting to attend the 25th anniversary of the Umbria Jazz Winter Festival Most restaurants provide options for those who are gluten intolerant. Two favorite restaurants - Il Malandrino Bistrot and Antica Cantina di Orvieto. Buy the card which provides access to all of the historic sites. Well worth the 20€. Wear comfortable walking shoes!!
Perugia is a great place to base out of for travel in Umbria and Tuscany. You could spend a day or two checking out the town too and have plenty to do.
We bought an apartment in Fabro, in the historic district, across from the castle. The town is small, no restaurant but two snack bars, post office, and large grocery store. Fabro is a hilltop Umbrian, working class, "real" Italian village, not a tourist spot. It's claim to fame is an intact 12th century castle, which has been converted to apartments. Don't expect English speaking people. Learn some Italian if you want to stay awhile and communicate with anyone. There is a B&B in the castle. Fabro has great views from almost anywhere in town. At the bottom of the hill about 10 minutes from Fabro, is Fabro Scalo. A much larger town with all the amenities for shopping and dining. Fabro Scalo has a train station on the main route between Rome and Florence. Likewise, it is on the A1, the main North-South highway in Italy.
Gubbio is a beautiful ancient hill town. It is worth a visit and is generally easy to get to if in Umbria. There are numerous good restaurants and cafes. Walking the town and the hillside provides many fabulous views of the valley and special discoveries inside the City itself.
Castiglione is small old town, with a big history, on/in a big lake, on the border of Umbria and Tuscany. Beautiful landscapes; excellent wines and food, and the most warm and welcoming "real" people.
Sant'enea is small town Italy with comforts. Grocery store, pharmacy,a pizzeria, and fuel on a ridgeline, central to travelling throughout all of Umbria and Eastern Tuscany. We did 10 day trips from this one location.
Orvieto
Angela and her family are amazing hosts! They have a beautiful farm house with incredible views over Orvieto! Moreover, Angela and her mom cook amazing breakfast, all with magical classical italian music playing in the background. Definitely one of our highlights in our Italy trip. Angela not only is an incredible host, she is also full of knowledge about Umbria; she gave us excellent recommendations about what routes to take to go to Civita di Bagno.. and where to find good vegetarian food in Orvieto. You'll love your time with her!
From arrival to departure our stay at Hotel Ideale was perfect. Our room was spotlessly clean, good modern appointments, comfortable but firm bed, lovely linens but most of all the small balcony with a view to die for!! Staff were friendly and very helpful. Breakfast is a buffet with lots to choose from. The garden and patio is a very peaceful place with endless views of Umbria. The hotel is across the road from Meottoti piazza where the bus arrives. Very good location and easy to walk Assisi. Highly recommended!!
The Hotel is located in a very quiet area in between Umbria, Lazio and Tuscany region - perfect spot if you want to visit any of the towns in these regions. The staff is very attentive and very accommodating. The Spa is truly a place where you can relax between the sauna, steam room, or hot pool (and the cold breeze shower was the highlight!). The other outdoor pool is absolutely gorgeous and plenty of sun loungers for you to enjoy the sun. The breakfast was also very well cater, plenty of choices.
Orvieto
This property is a very special place, in a stunning location high in the vineyards outside Orvieto. The accommodations are very comfortable with lovely bedding and towels and everything you would need for a hotel stay. The staff was very friendly and helpful, including at the breakfast service and dinner. Oh yea, dinner on the veranda gave us magnificent views all around as well as incredibly delicious food and presentation. We highly recommend Locanda Palazone for a lovely stay in Umbria.
Perugia
A unique idea to introduce contemporary art in real life setting - real paintings decorated the apartment, which is a special treat! Self-check in is easy once you find out how to do it, you will recieve a video explaining everything. Very good location, we chose it to be super close to Umbria Jazz festival venue. Two bathrooms, two bedrooms, lots of storage space, dishwasher, washing machine, huge TV, one in each room - kitchen cabinette is very handy, a pity we only stayed one night :-).
This is a small hotel wedged into a number of old houses and a tower in the old walled town of Colvalenza, in the middle of Umbria. It is a lovely place, surrounded by the green heart of Italy, and has lots going for it. The rooms are various in size- mine was a good size, with a small shower room and low ceiling. Not much natural light, but that's normal in these houses. The hotel has a good hotel-style restaurant, which has local visitors from outside the hotel as well as residents.
The accommodation/location was just perfect for my objective, which was to attend the Umbria Jazz Festival. The staff at the hotel were very hospitable from the moment I arrived and were always available to answer my queries on where to go, what to see etc etc. It was also to my good fortune that the receptionist readily offered to help by lending me her jacket when the weather suddenly became very cold. Once again THANK YOU!
Staying at the castle was the most amazing experience of our travel in Italy. The castle is incredibly beatiful and is located among the serene hills of Umbria. The owners are a very friendly and hospitable family. They cooked breakfast themselves every morning, made of ingredients grown and farmed at their farm. While we were there, the owners were getting ready to host a wedding, and i can't imagine a more romantic setting!
Perugia
The perfect accommodation from all points of view! Excellent location for visiting Perugia but also other tourist attractions in the Umbria area, the stylish design, the complete and perfectly functional facilities, the astonishing view on the city, the large parking space in the proximity are features for which I appreciate that the apartment deserves a 5 star rating. I also have to mention the kindness of the host.
Beautiful, quaint little boutique hotel. It’s right in the heart of Orvieto. There is a hotel bar that serves espresso, liqueurs, and wine. A nice breakfast every morning. The staff was very helpful and polite. They were a great help booking dinner reservations and a taxi (one of only three in the city). It was just the right hotel for the quaint experience of a small hill town in Umbria.
We stayed at the Sangallo Palace during the Umbria Jazz festival and the prices had been ramped for that but, I suspect had we gone at different time the room rate would have seemed more reasonable. Good position a little outside of the centre but easy to get up the hills using the escalators which bring you out in the old etruscan area. Large comfortable room with good facilities
Città di Castello
An amazing apartment in the historic center. This home is the definition of quaint, old Umbrian/Italian charm and a five minute walk to the historic center of Città di Castello. Luciana was absolutely delightful and brought us a home - prepared breakfast that was bounteous and delicious. When we return to this lovely city, we will absolutely stay again at Palazzo San Florido.
Immaculately clean, spacious apartment in a great location near restaurants, shopping, historic sites, and public transportation. Decor has a modern Italian vibe and kitchen was stocked with significantly more cooking essentials than I have seen elsewhere. Pleasant window views of ancient tile rooftops and the distant Umbrian countryside. Hosts are very attentive and hospitable.
This was my third visit to the hotel, but the first not during Umbria Jazz. So, the hotel was not as crowded, which enabled us to enjoy the hotel more. The wine and jazz themes are very nice. Breakfast is outstanding. The restaurant is also excellent. It is is close to a mini-metro station, which gets you up the hill quickly. We had a basic room, but it was more than adequate.
Hotel Lido has the best location on Lake Trasimeno. The views from the lakeview rooms are spectacular. Passignano is a wonderful town to relax, site-see, and eat. We come up to Umbria several times a year and stay at the Lido at least once. The breakfast is great and the staff are always friendly and willing to listen to my bad Italian with a smile (the do speak English).
This place is amazing. Beautiful views. Very peaceful, olive groves and vineyards everywhere you look. Two very elegant pools. Rooms are modern and clean, we had a stunning balcony. The food was some of the best we had for in Italy. The staff were professional, friendly and accommodating. The town of Orvieto was close by and was one of the most spectacular towns in Umbria.
Montefalco
We loved every bit of our stay at Fonte Sala. The Spacious apartment Gave our family of 6 plenty of space to relax after exploring Umbria. The kitchen was well equipped and I loved the view while preparing dinner. The children were enchanted by the grounds and the animals. The cool fall nights were lovely spent by the fireplace. And the views just can’t be beat!
Gubbio
Our first experience staying at an agriturismo was a success thanks to Montesalce. Beautiful location, comfortable apartment, fantastic breakfast, wonderful hosts, and a puppy. Couldn’t have been more perfect. And then there’s Umbria. Wow. Our family is always asking us to travel with them. Montesalce would be perfect for a family vacation. We will be back.
Standard design spacious hotel rooms with modern comfort in a historic building. Free car park with easy access and night surveillance. Excellent breakfast including local specialties. Friendly staff. Perfect location to visit Assisi and the wider Umbria region. It's also close to railway and bus station.
Umbertide
Breakfast was great. Our apartment was clean and large . Great value for the money. The hosts were friendly and gave us great tips for our daily trips to nearby towns. This place is ideal if you are planning to use it as a base for visiting the Umbrian countryside. Be sure to visit Perugia and Montone...
