The Apulian capital Bari has been known for its port since Roman times. Nowadays there are 2 harbours: cruise ships and ferries to Greece and Croatia depart from the new port, while the old port shelters fishing vessels.
Between them is a seafront road bordering the real attraction – the old town. Narrow, cobbled streets lead under arches to hidden piazzas with pavement cafes. Many are on adjoining Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese, where the old Roman road is exposed.
The imposing 12th-century Norman-Swabian Castle guards the west of the historic centre, and the simple Cathedral of San Sabino is from the same period. Equally understated is the Basilica of St Nicholas, housing relics of the saint. Pope John Paul II once prayed there, which may have given rise to Bari Airport’s name: Karol Wojtyła Airport.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the meeting point of the old town and the Murat district, built under orders of Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Facing each other across this street are the colourful façades of the municipal office and Piccinni Theatre, though most prestigious is the Petruzzelli Theatre opera house.
Booking.com’s Bari accommodation includes luxury hotels by the Fiera del Levante, cheap city centre apartments, and B&Bs near the train station. For families, the slides and swimming pools of Bari Acquapark make a great day out.

Polignano a Mare was a truly magical place and Alberobello a must see. Unfortunately we were not able to find a way to buy bus/train tickets to visit Matera on a Sunday and had to miss it, which was quite disappointing as we were very much looking forward to it. The food was good but the best places had lines that we had to wait in until we were able to be seated. Was not able to try the sgagliozze because there was always a line for them, and it turned out that most of the places that sell them don't open on Monday mornings, which was my last opportunity to try them before I left Bari.

If we come back, I recommend 3 nights in Bari, 2 nights in Polignano a Mare and 2 nights in Alberobello. We loved wandering the streets of Old Town Bari, visiting the beach Pare a Pomodoro. It was easy to get around by bus. Lastly, we ate lots and lots of gelato/ice cream!

We loved Bari but didn't have the chance to explore too much because only there for 3 days. We did take the bus to Alberobello for the day and the next day took the train to Lecce for the day. We are in our early 70's with husband having walking issues so one week would be perfect length of stay. If you plan to see Alberobello and the Trulli houses etc. book bus and train tickets in advance for best prices and departure times.

The place is devided into two, Old town & New town both very different, but in walking distance of each other which is great.
There are plenty of great restaurants & bars around every corner, all offering value for money food & drinks.

Beautiful city when in the old town which is charming, the lack of bins and untidyness detracts from the charm of the city. An evening walk through the alleyways is an experience dropping into the many bars for a glass of wine while watching the world pass by is charming. All pallets and wallets are catered for in the city from cheap pizzas to fine dining and even great sushi such as Sushi Daiki. Local buses are frequent although finish at 11 pm and taxis are a little hard to find due to the strict no pick up on the street rules. A car is needed to really see the region and visiting towns such as Monopoli, Alberobello and Lama Monachile are a must

I had stayed another apartment in Bari but this just made my stay and enhanced my joy / affection of Bari.
The best hotel you can find in Bari. Excellent location near the Sparano area with all the shops nearby. Large spacious and clean rooms with new furniture. The room included an abundant and delicious breakfast. Very qualified and hospitable staff. Agata, the lady who was in charge of management, was very kind and available for any need we had.
The location of the hotel is perfect. Situated in the old town of Bari with many nice shops and restaurants. The room was clean, very comfortable. Nice breakfast. Rita is an exceptional host. She went over and beyond to make our stay enjoyable.
Great location, 1 min walk from Bari Train Station and about 15/20 to the old town and main area in Bari. Good to stay at if you’ll be getting train/bus to surrounding areas. Spacious room. Nice hotel gym and breakfast, friendly staff.
