Boasting hot spring baths in a spectacular outdoor setting by Takaragawa River, Japanese-style hotel Takaragawa Onsen Osenkaku is a 10-minute drive from Hodaigi Ski Resort. We had a fantastic stay here. We chose a more budget friendly room in the "annex" section which had a shared bathroom. We were expecting a pretty small room, but actually our room was really spacious with an amazing view of the river and the hot springs! Guests are given these cloth outfits to wear while soaking in the hot springs - men have this wraparound skirt and women have this potato sack type dress. But actually it is pretty comfortable and dries quickly, so it was easy enough to wear at the hot springs. There are three spacious co-ed pools, and the pools never felt crowded, even during the peak time in the afternoon. When we went in the evening right after dinner we had an entire pool to ourselves for quite a while! The meals are a fantastic experience in their own right, with many traditional Japanese dishes and small hotpots or griddles to cook certain foods yourself at each meal. I recommend bringing some extra snacks for between meals. For lunch they offer a really yummy $10 bento box. The rooms are traditional style with tatami mats, sliding doors and futons, but they are really spacious and comfortable. They also provide you with traditional yukatas to wear while you are at the resort, which added to the cultural experience. The pools themselves have different temperatures, and the temps greatly depend on which part of the pool you are in. So there is something for everyone, whether you like it hot or lukewarm. We also enjoyed a short hike (maybe 1-1.5 hours round trip) behind the hotel. The trail starts from a back door in the annex of the hotel, and goes up a hill to a lookout point with pretty views. The trail isn't very well maintained and it's hard to trail find at points, but the main tip is when you get to the old abandoned hot springs building, follow the trail behind the building (not over the sketchy looking bridge thing).

Featuring 16 hot spring baths and a variety of treatments and massages, Zazan minakami is a relaxing oasis in the mountains of Gunma. The Japanese-style rooms offer river and valley views. The staff were super friendly and very helpful. The multiple Onsens were fantastic, in particular the outdoor ones, as well as the dinner. The curtesy shuttle to and from the station was very helpful as we arrived and departed during snow fall.

Located along Houshi River, Houshi Onsen Chojukan features a public hot spring bath, Japanese-style accommodations with free Wi-Fi and Japanese cuisine. The location was one of the best places I have visited an onsen. This place is very big, old and historical. There is nothing near the hotel, it’s completely hidden and you can hear the birds and frogs and the river running from your window. It was fantastic! The staff was very very kind and everything was well taken care of. The rooms are very nice and look out on the river. The kaiseki dinner was amazing and I loved the onsen, especially the one outside with the small waterfall. This place was just a dream!

Amazing picturesque location! Mineral water was natural and wonderful. Be prepared to sleep on a futon on the floor, but other than that very comfortable. People are very nice anyways in Japan, but the staff here was particularly helpful and accommodating. Free shuttle bus from Jomo-Kogen was a real plus which enabled us to get there from Tokyo via Shinkansen. Wish we could have stayed longer!
Thank you super nice lady at the front desk who greeting me upon arrival and during all my stay which make me feel welcome. The mountain view of the outdoor onsen, the snow falling down, was incredible. Very good food quality and hospitality of serving staff. Disliked · No access to snow area in the hotel
Great place for skiing. We tried Houdaigi Ski area and Minakami kogen200 ski resort. Both were excellent. Houdaigi is just a ski area with a restaurant and gift shops. The ski slopes are good. Minakami kogen200 is a hotel with attached ski area, which makes it a ski resort I guess. It's hard to find vegetarian or vegan food in these areas though.
Very old town, many of the restaurants and shops were closed - probably because of COVID-19. The nature is truly beautiful there, huge mountains, lots of natural water and flowers. There are also many hiking trails that can be a bit tricky to find but it's definitely worth it to do some research about the area.
Self driving is a proper way to Minakami, especially during driving to the onsen. Both sides of the road, you can view the forest and trees covered with whitish snow and natural stream and dams in it. No need to hurry when you drive and you can take a photograph anytime during the journey.
An onsen town at the base of the Japan Alps. A slow town that's a little run down thanks to overdevelopment during the bubble era. However, it feels like its making a comeback, with a thriving adventure activity scene and community, as well as cheap, good quality accommodation. There's even a craft beer bar and a good quality pizza joint. Access is very good, with a bullet train station nearby and frequent buses offering access to nearby nature and activities. Give it a few years and a bit of love and it will be a thriving destination.
Minakami
It is one of the most outstanding ryokans I have stayed in Japan when it comes to ambience and a sense of authenticity. The two bigger onsens in the ryokan were both quite distinguished and memorable, so I recommend trying it out. The water of the signature onsen comes naturally from the ground and you can feel the heat and bubbles coming from the stone floor directly, which is a unique experience. Food and service are also of high quality.

A bit lost in the Gunma mountains, i found a real ryokan with view on a river, amazing typical breakfast and dinner in a private space (to book), very friendly and attentive service and, last but not least, beautiful decorated baths (and really warm!). Just one hour from Tokyo to Jomo-Kogen and then the hotel bus 40’. Wheareas it was high season, the place felt not crowded and peaceful.

Beautiful location. This was my first time staying in a traditional Japanese Ryokan and it was amazing. The dinner and breakfast buffet was wonderful, the onsen was lovely, and my room was so peaceful. I miss it already! Great place to stay to ski Tenjindaira- convienent bus across the street.
The hosts were kind, helpful, and hospitable. The dinner was amazing and the dining room was cozy with a fire place and rocking chairs. It was close to Minami Kogen.
