Although we only stayed one night in Fox Glacier, it became one of the highlights of our South Island trip. Mr. Andy was incredibly friendly and gave us excellent local recommendations, including Betsey Jane Eatery & Bar, a nearby lake and a glacier viewpoint. The motel was spotlessly clean, comfortable and surprisingly well-equipped — almost like a hidden gem surrounded by nature. Sitting outside our room under the beautiful starry sky was unforgettable. Excellent value for money and highly recommended.

Beautiful snow topped mountain views from our Hotel. Great local pub for dinner. Matheson Lake with mirrored mountain view very beautiful, a short forest walk from car park and the Cafe there. The lake cafe fabulous mountain views and breakfasts. Nice shopping area in cafe too. Mt Cook and Fox Glacier didn’t disappoint. It was easy to drive around and find the delegated best viewing location for the Glacier.

Location, plenty of hot water for showers. WiFi is poor and communication with staff not great, the phone by the office doesn’t work, put a sign up saying so or get it fixed. The place looks tired but is functional.

As the Fox Glacier has receded the only way to see it close...

As the Fox Glacier has receded the only way to see it close up is by helicopter. As advised by the owner of our hostel you need to go to the view point near Lake Matheson to get a good shot of the whole glacier. Didn't bother to do the trails near the glacier as the views are not as good. Not sure if its worth visiting anymore. We stayed in Fox glacier township which had a good feel to it compared to Franz Josef.

The picture of the bottom of Fox Glacier is a complete fabrication and totally misleading.. You can't get anywhere near the bottom of Fox Glacier or walk on to the glacier. That has been the case for many years now.

You need to book your activities in advance.

You need to book your activities in advance. But some are free...the following give you great access to view the main peaks: Lake Matheson, 6km drive, lovely walk and view Glacier Viewpoint at Te Kopikopiko O Te Waka, 10km drive, great views Fox Glacier SouthSide Walkway, 2km drive, and 1.5hr return walk to see Fox Glacier and melt-water river flow

What a classy option. It is advertised as a backpackers but is more like a lodge. Really well set up camp kitchen and everything is very clean. Short walk to town.
