On a 3 week driving tour of both Nth & Sth Islands we used 3 Distinction Hotels. This was the best - and looking dated in line with the others. Friendly staff, free parking.
Featuring an outdoor swimming pool, on-site restaurant and a lounge bar, Discovery Settlers Whangarei is set among park-like surrounds along the Hatea River and beneath Mt Parahaki.

A good night's sleep in a comfortable bed after a long drive, with a hearty breakfast in the morning to start the day. Perfect imho.

The Grand Hotel has seen much better days, but the room was clean and the hotel's location within walking distance to shops, restaurants and tourist attractions makes it an ideal location. It was good enough for the Queen, who stayed there with her husband 71 years ago.

We made several visits to the picturesque Town Basin which has many attractions and amenities to appeal to a wide range of people
I visited the delightful Hundertwasser Art Centre for the second time while we were there. Also we enjoyed another visit to the Whangarei Falls.
We didn’t explore the commercial centre in the city, but from what we saw on our way through it didn’t seem particularly vibrant.
There are several other attractions I would like to visit on my next trip.

The town basin is superb and well worth exploring - don't forget to keep walking beyond the clock museum. It would be, in my opinion, the best and most interesting town basin/ waterfront in NZ. My most memorable part of it would be the Hundertwasser building. We spend hours in there. It is wonderful as is the cafe/restaurant in the Hundertwasser building.
The Whangarei Quarry Gardens are also worth a visit.

Loved the Riverside restaurants and playground area.
Loved the Riverside restaurants and playground area. The Hunderwaisser museum was good too. The walk along the river on a good day and arty house and crafts in shops are delightful. Whangarei city is nice to investigate the many stores and restaurants some up little alley ways. Great coffee and breakfasts there too. It's a lovely city I've visited many times.

Your ID will probably be checked at least once by police.
Large selection of food places.
Apart from Hundertwasser Art Centre, Whangarei Museum, the alternative Quarry Art Centre and the Waterfalls, check out town has anything else you need or are interested in… a quiet town otherwise!

The place is pretty by the marina with shops and restaurants, but! Due to circumstances missed the lunch/dinner hours for eating out. All (yes all on the waterfront) restaurants only offer bar snacks during other hours. EG fries, squid rings etc. We wanted something more substantial. Many people were walking away when they found that out. This is a tourist spot for pities sake!
We had had a long drive and were starving!
Also no really nice accommodation. Best I found was 3 1/2 star Distinction Hotel which has good bones but was really tired needing a major makeover. Stained carpet, wall paper peeling off. I am a kiwi and embarrassed that this tourist spot has sat on its laurels. I know people struggling with covid etc but wouldn’t you want to do everything in your power to make your place more desirable. My view - if you don’t have to stop don’t 😡

We enjoyed our stay at home away airbnb it really is a home away from home! It is in a lovely quiet area of whangarei very handy to town and other amenities close by. We were made to feel very welcome even our fur baby was welcomed with doggy treats . So happy to be able to travel and stay somewhere safe with our pet. Thank you to our hosts.
Excellent proprietors. Heather went over and above to make sure we and other guests were very well looked after. Unit was comfortable, extremely clean, and staff are careful to ensure everything is in good order. The best has been made of older motel units, and despite a fairly busy road the units are very quiet.
Love the room and bed. Breakfast was standard hotel fare but fresh and acceptable. Dinners from menu were fine and service was ok. Most staff are young and in need of a bit of experience. However, they were always trying to do their best and were very polite.
We loved it! The location and views were awesome. It had everything we needed. Loved the swing chair!
Why would anyone want to stay in a boring generic motel/hotel when you can stay somewhere as unique, quirky, and fun as the Boat House!
Friendly staff comfortable beds allowed a extra family to stay no questions just paided extra for towel and bed best motel I’ve stayed at in Whangārei excellent hospitality
