Marvão is a small village high on a mountain, with a view that's enough to make you climb.
It's a shame there aren't more entertainment, restaurants, and bakeries that would allow you to spend more time in the village.
The castle is worth a visit.

It's worth the drive from Lisbon, though I must admit it is quite a long drive. But the place is a surprise, a hidden gem, that needs to be experienced. A 2-night stay in this charming medieval village is the minimum. As a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city, I do not mind staying here for a week!

A gem of a village, a living piece of history and the people are so friendly. The castle is incredible. A walk around on the walls is just super. Mighty way to see the village and the vistas of the countryside below.

It was really quiet, which we like.
It was really quiet, which we like. There are festivals that might appeal to some people. We enjoyed the museum of archeology in the village. The village may be difficult for people with mobility challenges.

Marvao has a wonderful walled village and castle worth visiting. Not as commercial as Obidos, with fewer restaurants, shops and tourists but spectacular views from a more preserved castle with well manicured gardens.

We stayed at Dom Dinis, overlooking the valley below, in December 2023. Hardly any tourists, wonderfully friendly area. Be sure to visit the church (Igreja de Santiago) of which Saramago wrote on his journey around Portugal! We ate at the excellent Varanda do Alentejo, the lamb stew was fantastic.
Staff are very welcoming and friendly. Hotel is located on the top of a hill with fantastic views. Parking is ok, with a short walk to the front of the hotel. There are narrow streets, uneven cobbles and steps which is the character of the town.
Rooms were clean and tidy, very quiet.
Restaurant staff were engaging, food was great and served well.
You need to book early as it gets busy all year round.
The room is very clean and the location is amazing. We normally stay here when visiting Marvao as it is good value for money. It’s not luxury and the fixture and fittings could be nicer but you get what you pay for. It’s comfortable and the staff is very friendly. We will come back in the future.
This was our second time at the hotel and it was lovely. We were traveling home from the Algarve and a bit too hot to walk around. The two nearby restaurants were great plus the cafe opposite. Lovely place. A great, restful stopover.

Marvão is quite small within the walls but you can find easy a parking space. We had the chance to have the house only for us. Everything was clean, like a home and well cared. Very silent.
