The Capital of Old and New
The Saudi Arabian capital, sprawling Riyadh is a mix of historic monuments and ultra-modern skyscrapers. On a plateau surrounded by desert, it is one of the Middle East’s richest cities, so there are several 5-star hotels in Riyadh.
This wealth is also evident in modern architecture, particularly the Kingdom Center, a perfectly sculpted building looking strangely like a bottle opener. Lit at night, it has an observation deck with fantastic city views.
On its bottom floor is a shopping mall, and there is another inside Al Faisaliyah, the country’s 1st skyscraper. Riyadh is a shopping paradise and there are even more malls on wide, palm-lined King Fahd Road. This king also gave his name to King Fahd Stadium, home of the Saudi soccer team.
Unusually for a capital, King Khalid International Airport is right in the center of the city and there are lots of Riyadh hotels near the airport on Booking.com. South, in Al Murabba, is the King Abdulaziz Historical Center, site of the Saudi Arabia National Museum. Further south in Dirah is 19th-century Al-Masmak fort with souks and mosques nearby.
Wherever you stay, remember that Saudi Arabia is a deeply Islamic country and that local customs should be respected. Men and women may not be able to access attractions at the same time.

Highly recommend being respectful and aware of dress code, which is modest...abayas there for sale and a good all around wear for over clothes. **NO ALCOHOL OR PORK allowed in the country. Do research before deciding on this trip. The Boulevard World was very similar to Global Village in the UAE. - Historical Diriyah Fort This was very enjoyable. Free entrance to the entire place. We decided to spend our whole morning in this place. We walked around the fort, entered the museum and took lots of photos. - Yawmiyat By Dalal A very popular and yummy Lebanese restaurant with phenomenal service. - Najd Village This place has very traditional Saudi gulf food cuisine with a traditional 'sitting on the floor' design.
