Sonoma is a sweet spot in wine country.
Sonoma is a sweet spot in wine country. Not as crowded as Napa and with a charming city plaza downtown. Great restaurants and some nice shops. Our favorites places to eat are Della Santina's and the Swiss Hotel. Great thrift store finds at the Church Mouse on the plaza. Another favorite is Buena Vista Winery. It is the oldest continuously operating winery in the state and the staff is excellent. It is a beautiful property with so much history, and many great photo op spots. The tour is worth taking too. Getting around is easy if you have a car. The is usually ample free parking behind the north side of the plaza behind the Cheese factory/Swiss Hotel). For the more adventurous plenty of beautiful outdoor hikes or horseback ride through the vineyard.Guest review byJamesUnited States - 10.0

Enjoyed the Sonoma plaza with the shopping, restaurants, wine & spirits tasting. We enjoyed a great mango and avocado salad with chicken at the Swiss Hotel's patio. Great spirits tasting at Prohibition Spirits on a comfy couch and good information about the liquor from staff. Wine tasting at Capo Isetta on the plaza was pretty good with a very good host. Spent our last day soaking up the sun and mineral baths at the Fairmont Mission Inn and Spa, though we spent our two nights at the much more affordable and beautiful El Pueblo Inn.Guest review byKarenUnited States - 10.0

Just an hour or so outside San Francisco, Sonoma is a picturesque city set among the vineyards in Northern California. It features a beautiful square with galleries, shops and restaurants. They often feature live music in the square. Great for a long weekend, the vineyards offer tours and tastings. There is also a wonderful cheese shop there. It is a quiet and over-looked town! MUST SEE! They have a cute downtown Sonoma Plaza, with a Visitor Bureau with free coupons (2 for 1 wine tasting), lots of cute and varied shops and restaurants. There are also a lot of museums and the Sonoma Mission right there. We visited Buena Vista, Gundlach Bundschu, and Jacuzzi wineries--ALL were beautiful! We had arrived having stayed at The Coachman's Inn at Carmel and had benefitted from the service and the experience there. In isolation our experience at The Inn at Sonoma was good and it's only that The Coachman's Inn had a better and more interesting breakfast and the 'nibbles' at the afternoon wine tasting were more varied and tasty, and our room there was bigger. As we were in the main house, we could eat it at the dining table, or in our room. 2 very large pastries and a pot of coffee. Our bedroom was one of the smaller ones, but with access to a sitting room and a dining room, this more than made up for it. Only 150m from the main square at Sonoma, with lots of lovely shops, good restaurants and a few bars. Area was extremely safe and friendly. I managed to get a very reasonably priced room the day before the 4th of July since we wanted a night away. The location (and hotel) exceeded expectations. The hotel has an incredible atmosphere and cozy rooms. We were able to step out the door and run into excellent dining/wine tasting.
