Lovely cozy pub in a beautiful location. We had a lovely night here with a walk each day. For somewhere so close to Ambleside it is very remote, and there is little parking in the valley so feels very peaceful
Situated in the heart of the Lake District and a 10-minute walk from Lake Windermere, this hotel is set in 3 acres of tree-lined gardens and has a charming, wooden-beamed restaurant.

This is a beautiful hotel and staff were attentive and friendly. It was a luxury to have a clean, well kept small pool to dip in after a long journey. I had felt anxious about getting parked on site but that worked out okay for me, thank goodness. I was also able to get a healthy, tasty plant based meal after 8 pm and it was reassuring to know some items were available 24/7, as I'd been unsure when I would arrive. This is an older manor, meaning steps and such low pressure in the shower that if I raised the shower hear to just about 5 ft 2 (I am a shorter guest!), the water flow completely stopped. Taller folk might struggle with that, at least in the room I was given. I'd booked a single but got a nice, quiet double room, so I've no complaints One member of staff 'prowled' a bit, which I did find a little off-putting over dinner and breakfast, but to be fair they were so helpful, including to a visually impaired man who arrived, that I decided we 'got on' okay! The hotel allows dogs, so I had breakfast stuck between such wonderful cuteness - a great start to the day. On-site parking limitations might make me think twice but apart from that, I'd love to stay there again and I thought it was good value for money. I enjoyed my stay.

The breakfast was amazing although slightly hit and miss as different chefs were obviously on duty different days. The bedroom suite which we were upgraded to was fantastic. We didn’t use the spa because it was being worked on for a couple of days but it looked nice. We ate in the hotel restaurant on a couple of occasions and the food was fantastic.

On the recommendation of a waiter at Three Shires we took a walk to Elterwater starting at a footpath from Wilson's farm - quite stoney and a little wet in parts but mostly down hill - lovely little village. We had our evening meal at the Three Shires each night - excellent food.

We walked the Greenburn circuit from the door of The Three Shires Inn. A good strenuous walk but the track down from Wetherlam to Tilberthwaite was impossible to find and we ended up scrambling down crags. Fortunately it was dry.
Beautiful section of the path to Low Tilberthwaite, going through National Trust land ( Herdwick lambs, azure bluebells, bright green new leaves on the trees, rushing waterfalls!)
We ate well at the Inn; a little pricey and not sure why it was 4 stars rated as it was a fairly traditional Inn with smallish rooms. Good food, great scenery and location, though.
Little Langdale is not a place for nervous drivers (or back seat drivers) as the roads are narrow and have few passing places. In the summer, with more traffic, this might have been a bit off putting as you need to be comfortable about reversing along side stone walls. I wouldn’t take a motor home on these roads!

Breakfast is excellent. Dry cured bacon and poached eggs to perfection. Staff are unfailingly helpful from moment of arrival. Place is everything. It’s a fantastic base to explore Little Langdale and gets away from the jamboree of Ambleside etc.
Convenient location for south Lake District. Lovely comfortable cosy hotel and bar with very helpful, friendly and hospitable staff
