Playa grande was such a relaxing place. The beach sunsets were amazing! Took an estuary tour with Luis right off the beach - private tour for 2 was only $70 and we saw crocodiles, monkeys and amazing birds. Tamarindo is a fun day trip (taking the water taxi, or asking to be dropped off there after the boat tour). There is a cool food truck court at the end and behind the beach that has an iguana walking about. Tamarindo was nice if you like lots of people and lots of bar and food choices but playa grande was so much more chill of a spot. Loved it and will be back! Cantarana cafe had the best coffee and almond croissants and dinner upstairs was really good. Servers for breakfast and dinner were fabulous! The Tortuga was a great spot - with the most delicious fish bites I’ve ever had! Cafe Mar Azul was so much fun- Sunday night entertainment needs a reservation. Such a good price for amazing fish dinners.

Playa Grande is perfect for running or walking on the beach, however not for swimming, snorkeling or floating. On the other side of Playa Grande (crossing the river) there is Tamarindo, a crazy town full of tourists with its own long beach. If you are looking for a laid back place, Tamarindo is NOT where you want to be. Lots of traffic and tons of people walking in the streets and hanging around. Can't imagine what is like in high season. Stores have beautiful clothes but they are pretty expensive. Definitely a surfing town, everyone walks with a board under their arm...lol.

Location, beautiful beach , facilities and great bed !
Location, beautiful beach , facilities and great bed !
Lovely responsive employees!
Restaurant next door offered excellent food .
Not sure why everything had to be paid in cash eg car rides, trips etc . That was inconvenient.
One has to have cash on hand as most business was done that way. However we were told only in “ low” season.
The location was small and intimate and easy to access by foot. A car wasn’t always needed.

Beautiful beach line. Great for surfing and boogie boarding.
Beautiful beach line. Great for surfing and boogie boarding. Trees at the beach provide plenty of shade. Long and picturesque shore line is excellent to walk in the morning or at dawn hours. Amazing sunsets.

Nice quiet area.
Nice quiet area. A limited but good selection of eating places nearby. the beach is great for walking, swimming or riding a bike. It does not have shade trees on the beach. Lots of different birds.
Go to Hotel El Manglar to book mangrove estuary boat tour. it is very good. Playa Grande is much quieter than Tamarindo but it is about 40 minute drive if you want to go to Tamarindo.

I liked the area, which is a very long beach near the national park. Note that access can be limited, as it is a very bumpy and unpaved road from the national park entrance to the villas at the end of the peninsula towards Tamarindo.
Beach was fine enough to walk in - lots of shells and surfers. Water wasn't cold, but wasn't totally warm either, comfortable temperature to walk.
If you walk down to the end of the peninsula, water taxis that are only $2 will take you over to Tamarindo, so in the end it's nice to be a bit secluded away from the action, yet still have access to shopping and entertainment if you need it. Just wave to the guys at the other end!
Everything was exceptional, staff, scenery, pool, restaurant, rooms (pillows a bit stiff). It's definitely the best spot in the area. Unfortunately, when we were there, a lot of construction hindered our mornings/ day pool side experience. This is obviously not in the owners control, and the area as a whole is experiencing this. Still 100% prefer Playa Grande, especially El Reinas, to Tamarindo.
Property definitely exceeded my expectations, pictures do not do it justice.
Gorgeous place to chill out and relax. The pool is lovely and you can just relax in a hammock beside it and read, drink a beer etc. Everyone is really nice in the area, with great food nearby, in a lovely little community. It’s a surf area, very relaxed and full of ‘Pura Vida’. We really enjoyed it. We did go for NYE and had a wicked time at The Grateful down the road. If you want something more party/fun Tamarindo is maybe better though.
- Nicely designed hostel
- Nice pool to cool off
- Fully-equipped kitchen
- Surf rentals
- Direct surf access to Playa Grande (3 mins walk to the beach)
- The staff - Dawn, Stacy and the whole crew are incredibly hospitable and helpful
- Very strong internet in the common area
- The attached restaurant (owned by hostel) is delicious and reasonably priced
- Close to other restaurants and bars in the area
The Glamping is situated away from the very touristic places. It is very quiet and has an extremely nice garden - like a paradise oasis. Our cabin was large and very comfortable, with lots of open space - but all hidden behind exotic trees and plants. The shower under open sky was great!
A wide beach (Playa Grande) can be reached by car in 5 minutes. It's huge and great for surfing with almost no people.
We had such an awesome time, wish we had stayed for more than 1 night! Felipe was a great host and was incredibly helpful and welcoming.
Pipe House was beautiful. The beds were comfortable and the AC was great to have. Facilities were always clean and so were the common areas. Breakfast was delicious! The beach was less than 1 minute walk away and had few people walking/surfing.
Hotel Cantarana was AMAZING! The place is fantastic, a bit far from Tamarindo center (but that's what we wanted! Calm and peace)
The food was OUTSTANDING, we were incredibly impressed. My partner is French and I am Italian so we are fussy about food, this place definitely exceeded our expectations.
Coffe machines in the room were the cherry on the cake😉
The owners Mathew and Natalie were so nice, they are helpful in every situation. Breakfast was tasty and fresh. You can easily reach the beach by a few minutes walk. Playa Grande is a fantastic beach. Waves are great. Room was very clean and and comfortable, with a kitchen to use, they offer a fast laundry service. Big Thanks to Mathew and Natalie
Location of the hotel, the few rooms, and cozy ambiance was very good. I feel the relationship between price and service/hotel is excellent. Cleanliness of the room was very good and service from the staff was great.
Wi-fi was good. I worked one day an the internet managed all basic calls with cameras and files downloads.
ONDA playa grande is a great location for any traveller! Staff and amenities were top notch. Family breakfasts create a sense of community for all guests, and food was delicious. All staff were friendly and amazing at what they do. If your stopping in playa grande ONDA is a must! 🤍
The hotel is located right at the playa grande beach, meaning one can simply walk to the beach and just enjoy it. The hotel has a restaurant that serves all meals, which is pretty useful considering that there is not much else going on in the area.
