The Historic Heart of Moravia
The 2nd largest Czech city, Brno is a centre of Moravian culture, surrounded by lush countryside. The twin spires of the hilltop Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul dominate the neighbouring Bishops Palace, while the nearby square houses the Moravia Museum and Reduta Theatre, both the oldest in the country.
Beneath the square is Brno Underground, a maze of medieval tunnels and cellars that once housed wine produced in the surrounding region. There is an annual wine festival here, but the largest event is the Ignis Brunensis fireworks competition by Brno Lake to the north-west, lined by trees that hide Veveří Castle.
A less grand castle - Špilberk - sits on a hill in the city centre. At its feet is Masaryk University, the 2nd largest in the Czech Republic. The city’s Mendel University is named after the genetics founder who was abbot of St Thomas’ Abbey, where a museum commemorates his work.
The nearby Brno Exhibition Centre is of functionalist design, but the most important example of this architectural style is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Villa Tugendhat. On the opposite side of the city is Masaryk Circuit, home of the Czech MotoGP.

Brno is a very nice city, not too big, not too small, with lots of nice architecture, plenty of supermarkets, bakeries, cafes, restaurants etc. The public transport is excellent, especially the trams. I love bookstores, - there are three great ones in the historic center. Brno is much less touristy than Prague, but has nice sights like the main square (Namesti Svobody), Zelny Trh, and the cathedral. What a great place!
What a great place! We came here as flights were very reasonable and we have decided to explore lesser known cities. The architecture is stunning, it’s a lot cheaper than our last trip to Poland and there is a great craft beer, cocktail and food culture. Lots of art and an amazing boat trip included in a BRNO 3 day pass which was under £20 each. Also free entry to the most popular attractions. Had a great time and people were helpful and friendly. Brno is a beautiful historical city (founded in 1091) surrounded by nature. In the immediate vicinity to the east of the city is the famous Austerlitz battlefield, the site of Napoleon's most brilliant victory. To the north of the city are extensive karst caves with the famous Machocha abyss and a submerged river that can be navigated by boat. Both the Austerlitz battlefield and Macocha are worth a day trip. Brno itself is home to several universities with tens of thousands of students, several permanent theaters, an opera and a ballet. A tour of the historical monuments will take one to two days. You can wander around the city on foot for a longer time, there are many nice cafes, bars, restaurants, burger places. This was a visit of 12 US family members to visit with distant relatives in Brno, Czech Republic. Brno is a beautiful city and we stayed right on the square. A vegetable market set up every morning except Sunday. We could walk every where and also us the cable car/ tram. The history of the city is remarkable and such beauty. Brno has much to recommend for the tourist, the weekend tripper, business folk and for long term stays. I lived here for 2 years and thoroughly enjoyed it. Every time I come back for work purposes it feels like I'm back home. There's plenty to see in Brno and outside the city where there are plenty of fantastic country towns and villages.
