Karlovy Vary owes its affluent grandeur to no fewer than 13 hot springs and a warm water river. Add to this its colourful façades and tree-lined hill setting, and it’s easy to see why it’s one of Europe’s most sophisticated spa towns.
The best views are from the Deer Leap and Diana Tower lookouts, both high above the Grandhotel Pupp, a famous 5-star hotel which starred as James Bond’s gambling retreat in ‘Casino Royale’. It also hosts an International Film Festival, but the city is really about the waters, a fact reflected in its English name – Carlsbad.
You can take the waters at the 5 springs under the Mill Colonnade, and the wrought-iron Market Colonnade houses 2 more. The Park Colonnade employs a similarly impressive style to protect 3 springs, while a geyser bursts up in the Hot Spring Colonnade. The Castle Tower overlooks the Castle Colonnade waters, and a thermal pool at Spa Hotel Thermal overlooks the city.
The beautiful churches of Karlovy Vary include the Russian-styled Church of St Peter and St Paul. The Moser Glassworks produce suitably high quality products, and the Jan Becher Museum provides an idea of what to fill them with – local Becherovka bitter.

We loved this bath town so much we extended our stay. It is a spectacular place. The town itself is charming and the touristy/spa area wonderful to explore. We spent some time every day wandering/hiking in the woods above the town, sometimes taking the bus back to town. We used the Imperial spa three days in a row: it is expensive but the facilities are superb and a person should enjoy it at least once during their stay. Our first 4 nights were at private accommodation & the next 3 nights at Dvorak Spa and Wellness, near the Pupp hotel. We walked everywhere. The town itself is mainly level walking, but if you want to venture further you can climb to the various lookouts to see the town from higher up. There is also a funicular. Up here you'll find a number of wildlife reserves in the woods to see deer, swine and other animals. There is a lovely butterfly house which we found enchanting. A beautiful Russian Orthodox church is well worth an excursion. Shopping here is plentiful and there is something for everyone. I had the BEST pedicure I've had in my life in this town. It lasted me months and months.
Karlovy Vary is a city famous for its International Film Festival, which attracts the most famous actors and directors. A city of many old landmarks with a large number of hotels, boarding houses, spas and healing facilities, warm mineral waters around 36 degrees Celsius, a large number of restaurants and cafes. It also has a funicular railway to the top, from which there is a great view of the whole city.
We found this restaurant outside the main drag and it was sensational. The food was amazing and the service was perfect. A 3 course meal fixed price $38 Australian dollars. Called “Le Marche” along past the Grand Pupp at 4 Marianskolazenska. Stunning food and highly recommend. Loved this place.
We loved it and will definitely go back at some point, maybe even soon. It's a great place to relax. It's not cheap, but it's not overly expensive either. You don't always get the impression that the locals are thrilled to have you there, but we didn't have any major problems. We found most of the restaurants to be quite good, though you can get the same or similar for less elsewhere in Europe. Can't wait to go back!
Karlovy Vary is a beautiful spa town with lots to see, nice walking tour, relaxing massages and mineral waters. Not many people, nice galleries, clean air and easy to get around. Lots of history, great architecture and very friendly people.
My favorite experiences in Karlovy Vary were the Moser museum workshop tour, going up the Diana to the lookout tower, walking around eating spa wafers and experiencing the film festival. I ate at Mamma Mia pizza and Sklepnik restaurant. Both very affordable and great food. I'm a traveler who is disabled and accessibility is tricky there. If you have mobility issues, stick to the center of the town around the river and use buses. The areas around the town are sometimes very steep and hilly with little safe areas to walk. Once you get the bus map down though it makes it much easier. Be wary that buses are less frequent but I'd recommend a day transit pass. I also recommend the karlovy vary city card - I saved so much money and it's very easy /affordable to get. Going back in the fall to see places around the area!
