Comfortable beds we had a great night’s sleep. Even though the room was not en suite the toilets were opposite the room so it wasn’t so bad. The staff were fantastic there was a lady called Emily who went above and beyond, offered to come over and let me in the front door even if the pub was shut.

Beautifully recently refurbished hotel. It was immaculate and yet, in keeping with the age of the building. The staff were all friendly, helpful and professional. The room was very clean and smelled brand new. The location of the hotel is in the centre of Barnard Castle, so everything is within easy walking distance. The breakfast was superb. A great choice of continental and cooked breakfast choices, with table service. Free parking is always a bonus. Good value for money.

Steep in parts so I think it’s better for people who like to walk.
Favourite pub was the Blue Bell very friendly and how a pub use to be.

First I met lovely people at the Book Aid shop that drew me in on the way to the castle. A woman there informed of the existence of some little known or advertised places of historical interest. The well known points of interest, the castle, the Bowes Museum, and the Butter Market—wryly referred to by local people as “the round thingy” in the middle of the high street—lived up to expectations. The charity thrift shops and the Witham, a cultural center cum shop on the High Street offered wonderful shopping. People working at the castle, the Bowes museum, and the food co-op were wonderfully helpful, The food and service at Blagraves in a remarkable building, parts of which date from the 15th century, were excellent.
The town is easy to get around. Almost everything to be seen and done is on three contiguous streets, Galgate, the High Street, and the road leading from the Butter Market, about a five-minute walk, to the Bowes Museum (I didn’t get its name). There’s a sign for the castle ruins hidden and sloping downhill behind the Methodist church at the corner of Galgate and High Street.
I was only disappointed to not be able to see the prayer labyrinth in the floor of St.Mary’s Anglican Church at the corner of High Street and the road to the museum. It was covered with chairs occupied by worshippers for a special service with performance by a huge childrens’ choir at the moment I looked in on a Friday afternoon and the seating was being kept in place for several services over that weekend of the third Sunday of Advent. It was a consolation to see such signs of spiritual life in that church, and, God willing, I’ll get to see the labyrinth at a quieter time.

Lovely small town with lots to see and do in surrounding area
Pubs are good and a great choice for eating from breakfast to evening meal
Hecklers cottage was lovely where we stayed but house keeping appalling good job plenty places to eat out
Such a shame !!
We would love to stay again
Everything perfect. Room and guesthouse spotless and in excellent condition. Even though I had a small single my private bathroom nearby was large and excellent. Bed comfortable. Location perfect, enough out of centre for free roadside parking but few minutes walk away from everything. Breakfast excellent. I had Eggs Benedict and it was the nicest I have had and I have had many. And view from breakfast room onto a beautiful garden. Host very helpful and friendly.
We visited Barnard Castle from US (Brooklyn NY) for a family wedding. We were not familiar with the area, but loved how the home is tucked away on a quiet street yet walking distance to center of town . Don't forget to look at the helpful binder and sit in the little garden. I really appreciated the treats on arrival as we had a very long train journey. The house is packed with charm and kept very clean. I only wish we could have stayed more than two nights.
The cottage was spotless and tastefully decorated and furnished.and very comfortable. The owner greeted us and she was simply lovely, she made us feel very welcome. The cottage is in a beautiful, peaceful location, with walks from the front door, but also close to Bowes museum and Barnard Castle., There was lots of information on places to go. We loved it and we will definatly be returning Our stay was simply not long enough.
Everything about Swan Cottage was perfect for what I needed. It is easy to find, surrounded by lovely quiet streets despite being close to the centre, and easily accessible with no hassle at all. Inside was spotless and had everything I needed. Whether you are attending a wedding at Runa Farm like I was, which is only 5 mins away, or planning on visiting Barnard Castle then I cannot recommend this lovely home enough.
The exterior and the main part of the hotel (the reception and dining area) are lovely and done out quite nicely. The breakfast was nice and the staff were helpful and attentive. For me the hotel was in a good location as I needed car parking too, but if you don't have a car it's a bit excluded.
The staff were so welcoming, knowledgeable and accommodating. They were not yet open for meals for the season yet but were still able to serve us a drink when we arrived. After trekking all day, this was a great treat. The room was clean and comfortable. The town is small and cute.
the location was excellent right in the centre of town amid all the shops and bars with easy access to the castle and river The property was well equipped clean and comfortable. The host communicated well and left some breakfast staples which were very welcome Very enjoyable stay.
Lovely apartment. Right in the center of Barnard castle. Very cozy. Lovely bathroom. Lovely touch from the proprietors on arrival. Milk bread biscuits and cereal. All your cleaning stuff if needed. Nothing wasn't thought off, we will definitely be back again
The place was beautiful, staff were so friendly We had food on the night time in The Smithy restaurant attached to the hotel. The food was tasty and well served. We opted for the traditional breakfast in the morning as part of our stay that was top quality
We loved our stay here! the cottage was spotlessly clean and so comfortable with the BEST shower! There was a generous welcome hamper which made our stay extra special. There is lots to do in the local area and the host was really friendly and welcoming.
Good local food, fresh coffee, friendly service. Convenient for Barnard Castle, Eggleston Abbey and Rokeby Park. Pleasant gardens, great location. Quiet room - small double = generous single.
Just a 10 minute walk from the heart of the historic Barnard Castle, the Red Well Inn offers excellent homemade food, comfortable bed and breakfast, and an enjoyable and relaxing stay.
Stayed in the stables which is separate from hotel, lovely room, friendly staff, & food excellent.
Will hopefully visit Barnard Castle, & The Three Horse Shoes again.
The location as excellent - we walked into the town for some lunch. The snow made travelling difficult and our car was stuck at the property in the snow on friday.
We loved the location as were staying n Barnard Castleto visit family.
The cottage itself is amazing, beautiful furniture, lovely decor, the beds were comfy
