Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.
Our family of 4 loved the apartment. The beds were big enough that the kids could share a room. The master bedroom had an en-suite so my husband and I had a little extra privacy. There were two bathrooms so we didn't have to take so long getting ready in the morning. The distance from the apartment to the Shambles was walking distance and easy to navigate. The apartment was secure with double gate entries. We wish we would have rearranged our trip to stay here longer.

All attractions are within easy walking distance of the station and you can't really get lost. Many interesting shops abound and places to eat suit all budgets and some are open til late although it's best to check ahead to avoid disappointment.

We had a free guided walking tour of historic York which was very good. The walk around the walls is free and with good views. On a previous occasion we had visited the Jorvik museum and Clifford's Tower. The impressive Cathedral was £18 per adult, many Cathedral's are free with suggested donations.

One of the best cities I've ever visited by far.
One of the best cities I've ever visited by far. Everywhere you turn in York is a different building with a different history. Many, many places to choose from for lunch, dinner and I loved seeing the Shambles, and the York Minster. Everyone who visits York should go see it. We attended a guided tour and climbed the 275 steps to the tower for some great photos. it is amazing given the obstacles that the church was ever completed. The Jorvik Viking center was very interesting as well with the history of the Viking enclaves. Also, if you have kids that are middle-school aged, they will enjoy the York Dungeon. So many more things to do than I could possibly mention in this review.

Amazing Town with so much to enjoy and see!!
Loved the Medieval feeling and look, certainly a special place that is so well preserved ! The night life was something else (very cozy & warm feeling) .. We certainly need to get back with more time
the hotel indigo was perfectly located just on the edge of the city centre with just a 10 minute walk to the shambles, parking is available, (for a small fee) and all the staff were just brilliant.
our room was amazing, (we did opt for a senior room) spotlessly clean and very comfortable!
Breakfast was included and there was loads to choose from and the full Yorkshire was amazing, there was also a varied hot menu available.
actually there was nothing we could say against this hotel and we had a wonderful weekend!!
thank you,
We started travelling very early in the morning. By the time we arrived at the hotel, we were exhausted and it was still too early to check in. The gentleman at the reception was very kind to find us a room to rest at no extra charge, we really appreciated especially travelling with our very young daughter. The location was good, in a quiet area, a short drive to York city centre. Plenty of choices for breakfast, room was spacious, very comfy beds, heat was very good for an early winter trip.
The leisure facilities available provided a lovely addition to our break away. The staff were great and very helpful. The location of the hotel was in walling distance from York City centre.
The king-sized bed was comfortable and a good addition to the room.
Great location for visiting the centre of York.Bus stop close to hotel to take you in to city centre. Good parking on site. Great choice at breakfast. Staff helpful and friendly. Rooms clean.
