While this is quite the experience; it's also a frustrating/intimidating. The tour guides screw you no matter who you go with - they leave you with vendors they do business with regularly and you are forced to sit through sales pitches. most are aggressive. We had to literally walk away and so no over and over.
I hated every minute of being in the Souks and in the end found routes that were much longer just to avoid them. I'm sure that amongst the Chinese made junk there are some beautiful and worthwhile items but the hassle and abuse you get when you politely refuse to go to the tanneries or to look at a stall is horrible. I'm not good in crowds and being bashed by motorcycles and out of control donkey carts reduced me to tears.
Remember to keep smiling! It’s a challenge to get through the souks, without getting pick-pocketed (happened right in front of us), avoiding the motorbikes rushing through the tiny busy street, fumes from all sorts of stuff! Sales is pushy, but with kind NO’s, you’ll meet lots of kind, welcoming locals! A real worth while experience!
You either love them or hate them - a stroll through the souks is an intensive experience that exhausts your senses. Keep in mind there are two kinds of souks - the newer ones, under plastic roofs, which are closer to the Jemaa El Fna square; and the older ones that still have some of the old charm, which can be found a bit further away from the square.
Don’t attempt to go deep into the labyrinth by yourself, you’ll never make it out! We hired a guide (Youssef) who expertly took us through and shared his knowledge and wisdom about its history and people. Avoid the tannery area at all costs, it is a dangerous area.
Very busy, dirty marketplace full of people who are intent on getting your money; the outstanding items in this marketplace are the fruits, spices, nuts; other local items are brass works, clothing, leather; there are several restaurants in this area that range from street food to what looked like fine dining; we ate in a street food restaurant that again tried to get our money by charging us for bread which we didn't order, and then were intent on getting a tip; watch your wallet in this market; my Arabic speaking husband was able to considerably decrease the prices we paid on every item we purchased
