A beautiful hidden away property at one with nature. No glass anywhere! The sound of the animals was just perfect. Only a short walk to a deserted beach. The plunge pool was an added bonus as was the hammock. The host is so accommodating and welcoming

I felt right at home at Mecca and 10/10 recommend to all. I stayed about a week and felt I had the perfect balance of peaceful time to myself lounging by the pool or petting the dogs in the common area and social time, chatting with the owner Kim and her family who were visiting and were kind enough to extend invites to share time with them. Outside of my time spent in Mecca, I also liked that there were bikes I could take to explore and we were close to a restaurant with a nice beach view, live music and a bar. Plus, Kim gave recommendations of where to eat, what to do in the area and how to get around. Plus since I overlapped with Thanksgiving, I got to be a part of a black expat Friendsgiving and family festivities which was very nice as a solo traveler.

The staff were phenomenal. Josef who works at the front desk was amazing. Made us feel incredibly welcome and shared a lot of Costa Rican history with us. He also gave us advice of where to go, what to see and eat in puerto viejo. The property is also close to one of the best beaches. Was super relaxing and everyone was so friendly. The drinks were awesome, the included breakfast was delicious and the pool was also really nice. Highly recommend! Also, there are howler monkeys in the area which were awesome to hear and see, and with a short walk off the property there are so many other cool animals to see, Like toucans and macaws!

I love the property, the location and the staff. We booked the hotel last minute due to a hotel cancellation literally 10min before our arrival in the middle of the night. And the manager and security was so helpful that I forgot about my entire bad day. The staff specially Diana was incredibly helpful, they made our staying super smooth, give us recommendations and everything went just so so well. I am so happy that I stayed there

Wonderful property with lots of wild animals. The domes are really special and nicely decorated. We appreciated to have kimonos in the dome as well as books and local cleaning products. We had the beach for ourselves during most of the time. Breakfast was very good, too. There is a nice yoga shala with ocean view. Unfortunately, no yoga teacher was available during our stay.

Tortuguero was truly stunning - a trip to Costa Rica without it would be lacking. That said, our lodging was tolerable but not favorable. The beds were comfortable and our air conditioning worked wonderfully. That said, we found that the kitchen, while accommodating, was very hot, as was the bathroom. We would have preferred better lighting in our room, as it was difficult to see given the one overhead light that was available. We would encourage our host to include more lighting and perhaps consider an air conditioned space for all guests to share. That said, beds were very comfortable and we were very cool, which was vital given the tropical climate! We enjoyed our trip and felt thankful for the space we were given!

Tiny coastal town, dependent on your purpose would determine if its where you want to be. One of two entrances to the National Parque, there are a handful of restaurants and bars and ice cream parlors. Basically one-street strip. i walked the entire town in less than an hour and thats with stopping to take pics, sitting, and talking to locals. Very chill. no museums, or cultural things to do. you can take tours, that will take you AWAY from the town. And you can rent a bike/mc/ATV if you want to visit neighboring beaches or towns. but def dont need either just for the town, itself. IMO 3days is more than enough...one to do the park (and as of Oct 2026, part of the park path has been washed away by a storm, so you an only walk in, maybe half mile to a beach, then you have to turn around. i saw sloths, racoons, monkeys all in that first half mile, so opted NOT to uber to do the other 3/4 of the park. but still an option). One day to lounge on the beach, or ride to a neighboring beach, and maybe one day to to a tour AWAY from Cahuita. Most places close early but a few restaurants closed at 10p. i didnt do any tours i was there just to chill. I had red snapper each night.. Best was Langosta, 2nd Ricks, 3rd EW all were good but Langostas had more seasoning and included more sides. i was surprised that the restaurant near the park was closing 5:15, so i missed trying them out. there's an expensive but tasty acai bowl place ($18 for a bowl and a slice of banana bread) named Shamballa. They do have ubers. i guess i was there during off season (late Nov) but twice i was totally alone in the restaurants, and once there were a handful of tables full.

Only warm hearts and sincere smiles give one the feeling of friendship and every where i went was fun. I stopped at a small restaurant and the waitress being very young and pretty spoke no English which is fine but when looking at the menu i ask if she listed among the items. Only joking in a friendly manor A man who spoke English ask what i was saying and i told him at 82 most don't expect such language. He heard what i ask and went into laughter and smiles telling all what i said. They took it the way i meant it not like i was trying to be rude. The tables around me and those on the sidewalks stopped and laughed and it set the pace for smiles.

Our hotel, Arrecife Punta Uva, was right on the beach and very conveniently close to a restaurant. There were plenty of seating areas and hammocks provided, which made it easy to relax. Kayaking on the river is a must - you are transported to a different part of the river where it is completely calm and then you climb into the kayaks there. We saw caimans, monkeys etc but just being in the kayak going down the river is senstational. Turtle nesting tour wasn't as expected - very overcrowded, still glad to have seen it. Early morning Boat tour on the river also good. The town of Tortuguero is mostly tourist souvenir shops and a couple of restaurants, I preferred our resort.

If you are a nature lover, looking to escape the hustle and...

If you are a nature lover, looking to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life often associated with cities and fast paced living….. this is the place for you. If you are looking for a party town, then try somewhere else. This area has plenty of fun bars and experiences, but it really is meant for folks who can fall into the magic that the jungle beaches offer. The rainforest is… life changing. And I highly recommend staying open hearted to what awaits you. Waking up every morning to the 5 am howler monkeys was a bit spooky at first, and then I learned to embrace it. Out there, life starts early, and I started to feel naturally energized? I even found myself eating lighter, not needing as much to get me through each day as the visceral feeling of the rainforest and nature within it was stimulating enough. It’s hard to explain, but magical is the only word that comes to mind. We flew into San Jose, rented a car, and drove out to Puerto Viejo. We stayed in a beautiful and simple house, that had only screens and glass for walls. It was immersive and healing for the nervous system. We then rented a moped, super affordable, and rode around to explore the beaches and wildlife refuges. There are two wonderful refuges to support, The jaguar rescue, and the green macaw rescue. Highly recommend them both. The guides are knowledgeable, and the profit from your ticket goes directly to supporting the rehabilitation, protection, and care of all the animals there. The food can be quite expensive, but if you stick to the more local “sodas” or cafeterias, the food is still fresh and a bit easier on the wallet. Otherwise, expect to pay $40-$80 for dinner. Yes, really. But don’t let that dissuade you. There is something different about this place. And I will be thinking about this trip for a long, long time. Pura vida!

Cahuita is a lovely, true beach town.

Cahuita is a lovely, true beach town. La Shamana is perfectly located between down town Cahuita and Puerto Viejo. In Cahuita, I like that it was less crowded, more subtlely tourist oriented, has absolutely gorgeous virgin beaches and seemed more authentic in that the locals and tourist were vibing together more ...quietly. Pura Vida seemed to be highlighted here fr. Next time, I will most definately come back to stay in Cahuita.
