In Puerto Viejo we loved the beaches, very different from one to the other - Playa Nera: really black sand, Punta Uva- Blue Caribbean Water, white sand, palm trees along the beach side - we liked this one the most! There are a lot of wild animals to spot just walking on the streets which is nice- but there is too much trash on the streets - not clean at all in public areas. places to eat have really high prices for what they offer and decent accommodations is also expensive. We visited Cahuita National Park - not really impressive compared to other national Parks in Costa Rica, and Bri Bri Waterfall - ok-ish. Very nice experience at the National Cacao Museum - the team made it a wonderful day and we loved the pure Cacao Chocolate :-) My advice - do your research well before travelling :-)
If you have just a few days in Costa Rica you should plan well, in puerto viejo the playa negra is just there a walking distance and it’s amazing, national park cahuita is accesible by bus MEPE which is the only one and is not great is always late so not relay on it if you have a tour, bribri native community is close. A lot of tours available from puerto viejo.
Puerto Viejo is a really beautiful place, full of culture and life. There are a lot of shops, restaurants and beaches. You also have PLENTY of activities to do which you can find and book really easily on the road. My favourite place to have breakfast was “Bread and Chocolate”, nice staff and good food (savoury and sweet). To have dinner or lunch go to “Tamara”. The best beach in my opinion is Playa Punta Uva. The only down side is that I think everything is really expensive, from the food to the activities.
We spent a week in Puerto Viejo and it was amazing! We found a new favourite spot- Tasty Waves where we would eat and there was something going on basically every night. We participated in Trivia Thursday and it was so fun to get to know people from around the area! The town itself feels so safe and we were comfortable just wandering around- even after dark. There was no shortage of good food, people or beach! And the wildlife- Incredible! We went for coffee one morning and there was a sloth hanging right over the outdoor patio.
After speaking to several people about Costa Rica it seems most Americans go to Pacific side but I would say the Caribbean side is much more beautiful. Puerto Viejo is such a great city to visit the people are just so nice and welcoming. The wildlife is so abundant and lively. I must say that the food was my favorite part. It was so authentic but of course it is lol why wouldn’t it be. I tried so many new types of food I’ll definitely be going back.
Thi is a busy little town. A lot of money goes in here but the infrastructure is poor, roads are terrible both in condition and into and out of the city. It took 9 hours to get here by bus from San Jose due to road works so be aware. And this looks like it will be an ongoing condition for some years to come. I'd fly next time. It was arduous. This is a little shanty town, with a chill vibe. It's very easy to walk around PV, it's pretty small. Worth a stop over but I quickly exited to the quieter location of Manzanillo which suited me better as I just wanted to hang by the beach and recoup after some hectic travel. The weather was really good, considering the rest of Costa Rica was in a deluge, that was a nice relief. As an Australian traveller Costa Rica is VERY expensive. I had a fish soup and 2 non alcoholic drinks and it cost AUD$60.... I keep getting lulled into spending USD like they are Australian... the money leaks out.
Puerto Viejo
Great place! Gabriele was super helpful and accommodating. The place is brand new and very comfortable with a cute living room to look out into the stunning garden. The kitchen was equipped for cooking and the bathroom and bedroom were very spacious. The place was clean and the location was just foot steps away from playa negra. I loved the outdoor shower for rinsing off from the beach while surrounded by nature. The price was excellent for the value. I highly recommend booking this place for your next vacation in puerto viejo!
It's a very nice "resort-like' *** hotel. Probably one of the best in Puerto Viejo region. Beautiful private beach just in front of the room's terrace. Nice pool, very nice rooms with kitchenette and good A/C, good water pressure in the shower, also free coffee in the lobby, volleyball court and a ping pong table. Seated in a well preserved natural garden on the beach with occasional visiting monkeys on the trees. We enjoyed very much!!
Puerto Viejo
Located about a 5 minute walk from the town center of Puerto Viejo, we loved coming back to the property and sitting outside in the beautiful garden. There are also two cats that live on property who warmed up to us very quickly. We are learning Spanish so it was a relief to be greeted at the front desk in English. The tile work throughout the cabinas property is beautiful, and the outdoor showers were perfect after a day at the beach!
The bungalow was amazing, the woodwork was so stylish and plenty of windows for air. The bed really comfy. The restaurant was very authentic and breakfast reduced price. The staff all so friendly and helpful. Just across the road from the beach and really nice 10 minute cycle into town. Cannot speak highly enough of this hotel and Puerto Viejo, will definitely return thank you so much.
The staff was really friendly and nice, the view on the sea was the best thing that this place had. The common area was nice too. I came in Puerto Viejo by bus and it was really easy to get to the hotel, if you don’t have a car you can rent a bike in front of the hotel or take the tuk tuk. Everything (restaurants, markets, beaches) are really accessible. Nothing to say really!
Puerto Viejo
The breakfast was always delicious and abundant. Close to beaches and good restaurants. Far from Puerto Viejo which is fine because once the traffic hits, it's impossible to cross the one-way bridges. The howler monkeys are by far the best who like to eat the little nuts off the tree and then drop them on the tin roofs. LOUD - you would think it's raining. LOL
Puerto Viejo
Good location, little bit far from the city center, but walking distance. The Playa Negra beach is very close. Shop and a good restaurant is also nearby. The staff was very nice and helpful. The apartman was clean, spacious, nice and they have Netflix also. We can use another very nice Hotel (Banana Azul) facilitis.
The hotel is perfectly located just a short walk from the restaurants and bars. The fabulous black sand beach is just a minute away. The staff are friendly and always happy to help. The room was clean and spacious. They happily accommodated us for a extra night as we really loved Puerto Viejo.
Puerto Viejo
Very friendly communication and warm welcome by the owners who also gave us many great tips on things to do and where to eat. Sweet bungalow and beautiful gardens. Walking distance to the beach (Playa Negra 5 min) and Puerto Viejo (20 min). Very clean. We can strongly recommend this place!
The Beachfront property is a typical hostel with a nice, small pool, regular activities, bikes for hire etc. It's located just outside of Puerto Viejo so you get less noise from the town while still being within walking distance.
Puerto Viejo
Stefan & Leon are so lovely. The location is beautiful and we LOVED the Playa Chiquita beach in just 5 minutes walk. It's a bit far from Puerto Viejo but that means you get peace and quiet!
I loved the hotel staff! They were kind, helpful, courteous, and just wonderful! I also liked the hotel grounds, which are quite clean, accessible, lovely, proximity to the beach, and safe.
Puerto Viejo
a nice hotel situated outside puerto viejo; it is in the middle of trees - all green, so it feels a little narrow... nice staff even though attentiveness could be higher towards the guests
Puerto Viejo
Stayed in 5 different places in Puerto Viejo, but this one had the best location. Right on the beach, no dangerous rocks around. Fairly short walk to supermarket. Stuff was extremely nice
The hotel is located close to a major supermarket in Puerto Viejo. The rooms are spacious and clean, however not too well ventilated. The staff is accomodating, the breakfast is tasty.
Loved this hotel. Peaceful, beautiful beach, beautiful view from the room, greate service from the staff, and really great food both on breakfast and dinner.
Edina was lovely, beautiful spot, pool was clean and quiet location but near to best beach and local restaurants, loved it
